The seismic design requirements for intermediate and special moment frame systems in Chapter F of AISC 341-10 include extensive requirements for the critical beam-to-column connection. The design of these connections is required to be based on a qualified testing program. However, AISC has prequalified a set of moment connections in Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications (AISC 358-10) that can be used without testing.
This seminar explains the requirements in AISC 341-10 and how to use the prequalified connections in AISC 358-10, including:
    • System and member limitations
    • Width-to-thickness ratio limits for beams and columns elements
    • Determination of design forces for the moment connections, panel zones and continuity plates
    • Connection detailing requirements
    • A comparison of requirements for special versus intermediate moment frames
The seminar has an emphasis on special moment frames in non-industrial buildings. An example of a special moment frame illustrates how to apply the prequalified connection requirements for a Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connection. The example highlights general requirements that apply to all prequalified connection types and show the reduced requirements for an intermediate moment frame.
