Whats wrong with hiring people based on skill level instead of solely on race?? I think it's the right decision.
INothing wrong with that, but think we're also forgetting the 'it's who you know' principle that matters in some cases.
Because nobody ever did that and people were getting their jobs not on their skills or experience, but because of race and who their fathers were.

I have a son that scored the highest scores possible on the AP calculus exam and the AP physics exam. He is now a mechanical egineer he graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering and physics. He payed off his student loans and has only been in the work force for 3 years. He does not agree with those that want a free ride. Proud dad here and thankful that he has been successful. My son did not need affirmative action to get into the college of his choice. He earned it by hard work and determination.
Congratulations! I always told my kids as they were growing up I could make them mind but only they could decide the kind of person they were going to be... Sounds like your son has made awesome choices!

I'm a 46 year old half Latino half everything else and I can remember when I was in high school and hearing about affirmative action. I can remember thinking that why should anyone with a different color of skin get special privileges? Is this the government's way of say that "if you're not white, you'll need all the help you can get". That infuriated me... We should all have the same doors to open if we choose to. Skin color is just that! This whole affirmative action BS is just horrible and I'm glad that it's going away! 👋😊
Why should anyone with a different color skin be oppressed for hundreds of years? Why should African Americans never have even close to the same opportunities whites have because of Federal, State, and local laws that ensured that they do not have the same rights. Indebted servitude, Black Codes, Jim Crow, Segregation, and Red Lining have kept African Americans at a disadvantage and treated like second-class citizens. This Supreme Court decision just takes America's race relations back another 70 years.
You clearly have no idea why affirmative action was put in place. Please go do some research. Do you believe students of wealthy families should get special privileges for mediocrity?

@@sprawlingman8277 I don't know how other states operate, but where I live, the amount spent per student is actually higher at the bad performing schools. You can throw money at the problem but that won't solve it. The problem with most failing schools is FAILING parents who don't stress the importance of education to their children. If the parent doesn't care, the child won't either. It starts in the homes.

They aren’t far sighted enough to really consider the background of everything that those who’ve been disadvantaged have faced and their potential. We could be missing something important in the future because of that (e.g., inventions, medical breakthroughs, etc.). Yet they treat themselves to luxury vacations and make decisions for others that stifles the country.

I grew up white and poor with limited opportunities. To me this ruling should have come decades ago. Better late than never. This only scratches the surface. There are still far fewer scholarships and grants available to white students than minorities. I hope they address this as well. Even the Military has programs that openly give preferential treatment to minorities.
I know people who were cheated out of the job of their dreams because of government mandated quotas and the fact that they were too light skinned. I call the SCOTUS decision long overdue pay back.

That's not how it will work affirmative action will still exist but it will be based on income . So poor families will have children who will be accepted on lower grades which is.totally acceptable.

When you can just buy your way in, merit doesn't matter, plus hundreds if not thousands of applicants are denied with insane GPA and SAT scores etc. What proof is there that AA had anything to do with them not getting in? Asians make up 6% of the population and 27% of the student population at harvard. If anything theres more of an argument that AA has helped the asian community.
I was denied a promotion by HR department I had scored much higher than the minority applicant that HR department had selected. The result was the job opening had to be canceld. I was told not complain because...............

Affirmative Action quotas had a direct affect on my life. Being on the top of promotional list and having to watch people being promoted at the bottom of the list cost me more than a million dollars in income. It deprived me other opportunities that I could have obtained other higher employment past retirement from the organization that I worked for over 32 years.

Affirmative Action was always intended to be temporary, and that is because preferring people based on their skin means you are automatically discriminating against others based on their skin color. If you want Discrimination to stop, stop Discriminating... it's a simple concept. Same thing applies with Racism, as Morgan Freeman once said when asked how to stop Racism "Stop talking about it! Stop referring to me as a Black Man, call me Morgan." Thing's have gotten worse not better when it comes to Race Relations in the US in the past 2 Decades. This is a step in the right direction. Merit, not Skin Color, content of your Character not what shade of Melanin you were born with.

We fought a Bloody Civil War over this 100,000s dead or Maimed well over a Century and a half a ago. That should have been enough. I'm Irish, where is my Affirmative action? Irish Immigrants who actually fought in the Civil War on the Union side to Free Slaves were notoriously abused in Indentured Servitude, which was little different that Slavery.

I agree that improvement begins in K12. I worked in education I saw problems with affirmative action because students were sill struggling in public education. Student's were being pushed through from elementary, to middle school and off to high school while students still had problems with reading, writing and math. There were parents who were upset that their student's weren't getting the education that was needed.

I learned a long time ago that ANYONE can enroll in a college somewhere if you are will to be saddled with loans to do so. They don't care about your academics they just want the $$$$. Of course there are exceptions to this, but not every one NEEDS a Harvard education to start a career.

If you are poor and you go to a local public school and you excel way past the other students, no matter what race you are, then you should be helped to go to a higher learning school so you can have the opportunity to learn more than what a public school teaches.
Grades coming out of high school should be the only reason for acceptance or not by colleges....

That's Right!! Being Accepted to a College shouldn't ever be based on Gender, Skin Color, Zip Codes or Race. Only the Best Grades and Abilities of a Human Being should ever be the Requirement(s).

Well if nothing else the Supreme Court ruling is gonna humble some white and Asian students when they find out they still didn’t get in to their dream school and it wasn’t the fault of already underrepresented Black applicants.

I remember my three kids when they were 5, 6, 7 years old: When my 5 year old daughter was not yet in kinder garden, my 6 year old son was in KG and my eldest son was in prep, they were watching Voltes 5 and other subsequent Japanese cartoon series, which were in Japanese but they could understand the stories because they were reading the English close captions at the bottom of the screen. Those close captions were rolling from right to left so fast but they were able to read those English translations and still see the graphics despite the fact that English was just their second language. They also learned to speak a little of Japanese language.....Fast forward to my grand kids: For many years, probably a decade, my grand kids have been watching the Korean telenovela, or Korean television series that have been pervading the Philippine television just like the Japanese cartoon series did in the 1980's and 1990's.......Just recently, I have a 15 year old grandson and a 16 year old granddaughter passed the test givenby a private company for them to teach English online to children and adults living in China.
Real question: who the hell is going to enforce this? Aren’t the universities just going to do whatever they want? The only way is to cut off funding to Public colleges but what about private?
Not necessarily, students will file complaints and they will be investigated.
