The progressive reduction of 6db/octave applied to the hight cuts of the cab or the IR is undoubtedly the main point to obtain a good tone free of these unpleasant flickerings which affect our sound on the digital modelers. I did it on the global EQ but it's much more flexible on the cab or on the IR, you can keep all the highs for the clean sounds.
the point is the high cut on the IR / Cab is insufficient as it's only 6db/octave vs 12db/octave on the separate block. I wish line6 would address this.
I've not managed to find my favourite cab/mic setting yet but buying your presets has helped. As you discuss, the HPF is useful to curb the fizziness often found. I maintain that a well captured quality cab IR should not need the high end "taming" only if the user prefers a darker tone. I also find a decent cab IR can produce a more open/real sound than any of the built-in cabs. Quality playing and great videos, as always!

Or when would using a single block by itself for High/low cuts be preferred, and where in the chain would we put it. I often thought having it first in the chain. Set it up for a particular guitar and save it in your favorites and name it after your guitar. 😮. I don’t know… also I think the fizzy sound disappears a little when you pull the mic back from the cabinet…
I do a similar thing, but in Global EQ. If you think that the average 12' guitar speaker has a range of around 80 to 100Hz to around 4.1KHz, set Global EQ to that, and you will have a closer live/natural guitar sound. This is especially noticeable when playing live. Also, doing it in Global EQ, saves using another block.

In a related matter, I just watched a recent video called "How we are capturing amps with the Helix" on the ToneJunkie TV channel. One of the interesting points was how dialing in can't match the precision of EQ Match. Well worth watching, and the tones they got were some of the very best I've heard from a Helix.

The high pass in the Boss Gt1000 is really bad and had to get rid of my Boss Gt 1000 and it could not tame the higher frequencies even after using the inbuilt EQ.
I do the same with my Kemper. I have a global High pass and low pass filter at 70Hz and 10KHz. Then each Rig has a unique EQ with peaks at 150, 1500, 2000, and 3300Hz that range from 0.0 to 3.0 dbs However, I don't ever approach high gain levels like in this video. My rig gains are typically between 2.5 and 3.5 on the Kemper.
Please compare this method to placing the “studio tube preamp” somewhere in the chain. It is my go-to at the moment when something needs de-frizzing or warming up.
@@Newnodrogbob I’ve had good results doing the same thing as mentioned above. My chain goes (loosely) comp -> dirt -> amp -> wet fx -> cab -> studio tube preamp -> LA studio comp. That chain more or less emulates a pedal board with wet fx in the loop and a mic’d cab going to a desk with compression at the end. I’ve also done it with wet fx at the very end. Hope this helps!
Maybe not a blanket although I have found a microfiber swimming towel perfect for shaving off the harsher top from a bright pair of Jensen P10Rs. I'm following your previous pointer about using the global eq when the room needs all the sounds to be less bright.
I wish I could get the hi cut to have as big an effect on my clean tones from a barky es-335. I get harsh, unfriendly and bridle barks as well as pins and needles in my cleans. Cutting the highs just dulls, flattens and darkens the tones. Gently muting a string with my fingers immediately after picking it to stop it from ringing helps though. Picking light and releasing the note fast also helps. Reverb and delay cover up my picking styles to much, so they don't help. And adjusting the pick attack controls is a waste. While the Helix's fancy controls are great for gain rich amp modeling and solidbody guitars, they are like super highways that bypass rural Americana and Hicksville, USA. And most post 60's amps aren't friendly to es335 and hollowbodied guitars IMO. And line6's modeled amps don't cuddle up to semihollow and hollowbodied guitars either.
I have the same issue. Helix sounds great for dirty amps but fails clean amps. The only success I've had so far is via the parametric EQ. Playing with the high/low cut parameters as well as the Q setting for High/Mid/Low frequency cuts. Have had the best results with in the 4-5khz range. Cutting out around 6 - 8 db. Also, biasing your amp hot and using the Bias X to round out the pick attack. LA studio compressor is also nice at the end of the signal path to round it all out. Good Luck.
I had my Helix LT for about a month, I have the Line 6 PowerCab 112 (single speaker). I’m using my YJM strat (single coils, but not really) and I’m having a hard time getting the bass strings to sound clear and defined under gain. When hitting chords or playing rhythm… it just sound muddy, and undefined.. “wooly” Is there any area I should focus my attention on? There are a lot of positive reviews for this cab, I just wish I could get a clearer, defined bottom end! Help!!
I’m new to the Stomp and Powercab and haven’t been satisfied with my tones yet. I hear people suggest high and low cuts. Would you say the low cut is necessary?
Definitely recommend it tightens up bass a lot I say put it at 80, plus if you’re not satisfied with the tone it could just be settings on it man some amps are just better for specific sounds over other ones

I also find that in the heat of a mix, my wah pedal helps me find the sweet spot in a particular part of the song.

yes, yes, yes...cabinet speakers have a defined response that this adjustment gets you closer to in a modeler...

Hearing this makes me think the harsh solid state amps from the 80s and 90s would have really benefited from a hicut circuit.

I need to look through some of my presets with this in mind. So you prefer to use the IR or Cab Hi/Lo cuts over the dedicated Hi/Lo EQ stomp?
The cab cuts work fine unless you have a lot of effects after the amp. Because then you’ll want a hi/low pass filter at the end of your chain.
