Abandoned Nazi Bunker in Norway

  • Today we are exploring an abandoned Nazi bunker at Ramsøy fort that I stumbled upon while on the west coast of Norway. This bunked is a part of Festung Norwegen, or Fortress Norway- a special military defence line of Nazis, built between 1942 - 1944. This bunker, and hundreds of bunkers like it, ran down all along the west coast of Norway all the way to the west coast of France, making up what was known as Hitler's Atlantic Wall. This defence line was supposed to be a bulletproof barrier against any of the potential allied forces attacks along the Western Front. Ironically, most of the bunkers built in Norway have never seen much action. Today, we will scramble through one of these unique history remnants and see where evil once resides.

A lot of your short rock walls were gun placements. The cubby holes were fir ammo storage, even those larger ones by the picnic table. Those corroded fixtures were for either electric or communication access. The small hooks in concrete were for camouflage netting attachments. They didn't use flags on most bunkers. The Wehrmacht in Norway numbered over 250k. There was active fighting in the most northern of Norway with the Soviets. Other than bombing naval installations and a few airbases there was little to do except fight the resistance. Berlin was always afraid of an invasion of Norway that never happened.

Why doesn't someone clean all the boulders out. Where did they come from anyway?

Probably to hinder a homeless person from sleeping in there or anyone who wants to camp or lodge in the bunker.

As kids (in the 70s) we used to play in the Nazi bunkers in Norway all the time. Of course we were convinced that they were all haunted, and that a Gernan soldier could grrad your ankle every time you climbed a ladder, which made it all the more exciting.

Wow, thanks for sharing, CM! That kind of explorations must have made for one exciting childhood experience! Well, I can’t blame you, if I was exploring it for the first time all by myself, I’m sure it would have had more of an eerie feeling to it! Thanks for watching btw! :)

We explored Hausvik Fort in Norway recently. It’s incredible the amount of work that went into them. Miles of tunnels.

Great tour, this was quite a large bunker, Exciting. As I child I often went on holiday in north-western Jutland, Denmark, and loved to explore the many old German bunkers there. But this one is larger and with stairs etc., a whole complex, very interesting. I'll definitely visit this place if I come to the area. 3:17 Oops! Don't worry, the only venomous snake (a viper) in Scandinavia isn't that dangerous. Ramsøy? Nice with the diagrams and maps you included. All picnic constructions, benches etc. are modern. Nice playground.

Thanks very much for watching, Lars! Really glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the heads up on the snake situation - I never knew 😋 if I ever visit Jutland, I’ll definitely try to find some of these bunkers that you’ve mentioned!

@@BootsOnTG We have old German bunkers all the way along the western coast of Jutland.
Up north at "Hanstholm" there's a very large complex, a staffed museum. They had four very large guns (one is preserved, is now at the War Museum in Copenhagen) that could shoot half the way to Norway.
In Norway they had similar guns so they could close the gap at Skagerak Sea - except for about 70 meters right in the middle. Naturally the British found out and that's where they would have sailed had they ever sent their navy towards Oslo.
If a large warship is 30+ meters wide and you have to navigate an only 70 meters wide invisible stretch, the exact location varying depending on the wind, you need some very good navigational skills. But the British believed they could pull it off should the need arise.
