As a mother, it has been tough to watch my 6 month old baby through the ups and downs of her first ISR swim lessons. Even though I seem to be relaxed and excited, my heart is in my throat every moment. I try to be as positive as possible for her to help reinforce what she's learning. It is imperative that she learn how to rescue herself should she fall into water. You see, we have an inground pool at our home, and when her big sister was 2, she fell into our pool whilst three adults cleaned the pool deck around her. When my husband turned around, our daughter was floating face-down in the middle of the pool. She was fully dressed, and no one heard her go in.
Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children under 4.
My husband was able to jump in and rescue her in the nick of time. But, she wasn't able to rescue herself. Thus, as hard as it is to watch my new baby learn these crucial skills, it is far, far preferable to the unbearable alternative.
