I enjoyed that Rick, started it with the intention of watching it in a couple parts then sat and watched it all the way through. I know exactly what you mean about the photography, I was a photographer and ended up feeling detached from the events I was doing, turning pro took all the fun away for me, since mum died almost a year ago now, I have sold it all and just have my GoPro and G1X compact. Not been tempted back at all.
Re the camper, I think you need to rework it so you are comfy in bed then get yourself a little moped to stick on the back, on a moped you'll see more stuff riding around, can pop in to town pick up what you need, easy parking, very low fuel costs, closer to nature. Forget the caravan idea it will just come with a whole new set of problems. Your camper is already ideal if you can sort the sleeping out. Maybe you can rework the seats to slide out toward the kitchen and make a 3/4 bed situation, then you can lie across the bed and get those precious few inches.

So glad I went on that lovely drive with you, Rick. It reminded me of when I was so much younger, and the whole family would go off for a Sunday drive to one of our beautiful landmarks in Northamptonshire ending up in a local pub with a coke and a bag of crisps in the car park. Agree about the snapshot in your own mind, x x

I am so loving these drives and blogs. You make one feel like we are there with you and just riding along chatting. I was laughing when thepolice was behind you, as we have all been there. LOL. When you got out of the van and took us with you, I thought that must be what a toddler feels like when you pick them up and carry them along. The castle area was peaceful. Maybe they used stone axes prior to the iron age. I'm with you, you can. almost feel the presence of long ago people in a place like that. Who knows, maybe their spirits still remain even after they are long gone. It was a beautiful trip and I thank you for taking the time to bring me along. God Bless and take care.

Really enjoying these Chatty Van Vlogs Rick. We are interested in buying a caravan too. We've used a tent up till now but want more comfort these days! You can always buy an older one first to see how you enjoy it and how much you use it before investing in a really new one. Don't think there is much point in 4K. Like you've said the file sizes are enormous and whilst it looks great, it's not the same amount better than HD as HD was over SD. Also the upload times will be ridiculous. Great video.

    Rick,
Spot on about the vibe one gets from sites of antiquity. The Giza Pyramids gave me the same strong feeling and deep reflection too, I could feel the echo of humanities vibe. I at one time was always slinging a SLR(dating myself for sure...LOL)...and what you say about missing taking in what the camera doesn't take in through the lens...once again...spot on. Sometimes only sharing the moment...scene with oneself...is "spiritual currency", only you can cash in on. Another great "chatty" "natter" of a video...very poignant!
    Cheers mate

In one way i agree with what you say about photos, that's why i don't 'spend time' taking them, even though i have a dslr, i try to take them quickly, advantage of dslr is that you can take loads, and go though them later.
If you've ever been to a really nice place, enjoyed the scenery and bought a souvenir, then many years later you've found that souvenir and all the memories flood back, that's how i think of photos, there are no souvenir shops in very remote places, the photo (or video) is my souvenir.
Heh, sounds like the move to Wales will happen sometime soon, might want to sell up before your place gets buried, good thing you did the redecorating :D
    Just messing ;)

Hey there Rick. On your idea of getting a caravan due to poor sleep in the MH - why not change your current bed/seats into a small double bed that folds away into a bench seat? That wouldn't be to much work would it and you could then sleep either diagonally or next to your kitchen unit with your feet into the aisle? Just an idea for you, guessing you may have thought of this already! Take care.

I was considering buying a caravan but decided against it as I like to wild camp. You can't easily do that with a caravan. Like you, I prefer to travel overnight on long journeys. When you turned round on that byway through the race course, you only had a few yards to go before reaching the main road, I expect you checked that on Google Earth when you got back.

Rick, my "two cents", because that is what my opinion is worth. Build your own caravan to pull behind the van. Could be a teardrop or small stand-up style. Seen your van build videos, you look to have the skills. Suggested site for your reading would be www.tnttt.com . Everything your would want to know. Even a section on building foam sheet caravans.

    • @Nick23Wood
      @Nick23Wood 8 років тому

Yes I would second that - it seems a shame that you have a van you can't sleep in (I would just lie on the floor) but as you say there are advantages to a caravan if you stay on campsites rather than wildcamp, so building your own would be a great project (and video series). A teardrop or a folding caravan - I would be tempted to buy a cheap caravan for the chassis strip it down and then build your own version on top. The possibilities are endless - how about a caravan that turns into a boat - there is a challenge.

From research online the iron age in western Europe started around 800BC to 1AD. Barbury Castle was first establish & occupied 2,500 years ago (500BC not 1,700BC as you said). In the 6th century the site came under the Saxon kingdom of Wessex following the Battle of Beranburgh in AD 556 having defeated the Celtic Briitons, the site of which is just north of the castle.
Not much is known as to what use the Romans made of the hillfort during their occupation, but i did find some info:
"A number of features have been found within the hillfort, including a Bronze Age roundhouse, Iron Age storage pits, and a Roman-style building. The Roman-style building has been interpreted as a temple, and it is possible that the hillfort was used as a place of worship in the Roman period."
"Excavations at Barbury Castle in 1969
… 3.5km (2¼ miles) south of Wroughton: a possible Roman Camp, with a single entrance defended by an external clavicula looking south to Barbury Castle hill-fort, has been identified from crop marks.” (Britannia, 1970)
This tentatively identified Roman camp was evidently built to control the population of the Iron-Age hillfort at Barbury Castle which lies just to the south of the Roman encampment."
