  • On our journey to find the perfect camera (YIKES!) we find ourselves one year removed from purchasing Sony's FX30 APSC mirrorless "cinema" camera. How are feeling one year later and is this even a REAL cinema camera?

One time for the fx30 users 💪🏾 but in all seriousness I think you hit it on the head with it being more hybrid than anything. One of the factors that pushed me to buying the fx30 was the glass prices. I’m still happy with my purchase as an entry into cinematography and I’m sure Sony is cooking up an updated version as we speak.

I really hope thats not true and they support it for a few more years. If they add shutter angle and open gate… the cameras damn near perfect

You can go ISO 3200-6400 with SLog3 exposed to the right and bring it down in post. Viola, barely noisy or at least very usable.

    4:31...
Funny how most today's native-English don't use this word I learned when I was 13 years old or so, in my first year of English at school : "inexpensive".
Such an easy-to-use word, don't you think ?
And so much more relevant when prices and trade are the topics.
And to soothe things a little, after me criticizing, that new update, bringing shutter-angle (among other goodies) probably is a treat for you.
The previous one was already a blessing, but the newest one shall seriously change the game !
This is how Sony goes... listening, improving, updating, delivering.
There are not many videographers still using a camera bought in 2018... but me.
That Sony RX10M4 is running like hell, with an AF to rule them all, profile pictures aplenty, custom profiles and buttons, a 600 mm equivalent zoom to put many C and N lenses to shame, Mi hotshoe and all necessary connectors, great audio circuitry, power-through-USB to run for hours, and so on...
When I saw all those new cameras hitting the market, I was ready to ditch it. Silly me !
Sony makes no such things as perfect cameras, so does no other manufacturer.
If that's what you're looking for, I'm afraid the Solar system won't suffice.
But the folks in Tokyo know how to stay ahead of the competition, and what it takes to lead the bunch.
I still have, and use for concert recordings, a Sony MS technology microphone, the ECM-969, I bought in 1989 or 1990. Among other things (cables and switches, MiniDisc recorders, DV camcorders and cassettes, earphones, etc.)...
That says a lot about this brand and their never-ending quest for the best quality/price ratio.

Thanks for the honest review! I bought my FX-30 and I love it! The only downside I find coming from a Canon usage is the damn playback and the menu! I know it offers more but I wish it would allow you to just use your thumb to move to where you want to be in the playback. That's something I use a lot in my work and it really always makes me want to use my other camera but other than that it's a gem! Merry Christmas

Those are def cons I forgot to mention. The menu is not intuitive at all. Glad ur enjoying the camera. Keep creating!

I'm still in a dilemma now whether to go for fx30 or s5ii. Currently using Panasonic g85 and its a beast when i shoot wedding videos especially when I shoot solo. the Panasonic stabilization is a must for me however i kinda prefer sony color looks and variety of their third party lenses but just cant with Sony's amateur stabilization, i dont want the Hussle to use catalyst browse software for each 100 clips. I have never used a vlog pp before on Panasonic because g85 has none of the log profiles not sure if it is similar to sony S log so I can use a variety of luts. And in my country most videographers use sony due to 2nd hand resale value and easy to get 2nd shoot job just in case. Kinda hard to find people using Panasonic but still I cant get away how good Panasonic IBIS.

That Panasonic IBIS is awesome. The FX30 has decent stabilization but nothing like that. The S5II might be the way to go for you. Its a great camera.

Trying to decide between an fx30 and a bmpcc 6k. The videos i've seen from the black magic are super impressive, they seem to have more depth and detail where the fx30 seems a little flat. But maybe that's just in my head. My brother also says the sony performs better in sub optimal light. I'm confused!

Depends on what you are shooting, if run and gun - go to sony, if shooting film like activities that require setup time, scripted etc - go to Blackmagic.

Literally the only thing keeping me from getting this camera is the crop in 4k120 and shutter angle.
They're adding shutter angle FINALLY.....but honestly that feature should be standard on any camera that can shoot video. It pisses me off that they're not just putting it in all their hybrid cameras like the a7iv, a7sii, etc. etc.. It's not like it's some crazy feature either...it's a simple software feature that improves quality of life/use exponentially.
They missed the mark for me with this one and the 6700. They were SO close....if they give me an FX30 that can do 4k120 with no crop then I'll jump on board but until then....not enough of an upgrade. Also waiting for built in eNDs and better stabilization/IBIS but that's probably a pipe dream for the foreseeable future.
