The Company is the United States Government, if this was real several Alphabet agencies shut the town down and make up some lie involving a environmental disaster and either discredit or silence the towns people if they ever had the chance to leave the town at all.
It was crazy, they said it was simply a germ launched into space and when it came back it became a life form that hunts its prey. He said he believed it killed the dinosaurs.
The flamethrower was a nice idea, no matter how tough/adaptable it may be, it is still biological and biological material disintegrates in the presence of extreme heat. The problem was a lot like "The Thing", you've got to hit it **ALL** at once or any piece you aren't attacking will defend the one you do. Obviously not in the movie lol BUT I suspect that's how they would have ultimately disposed of it after it was frozen. Dumping a small, frozen piece at a time into an incinerator.
