  • In 1973, the actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his career-reviving performance in The Godfather. The Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather attended the ceremony in Brando’s place, stating that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in the film.

Bunch of hypocrites. Nowadays, every actor goes on stage and starts babbling about politics and the injustice in the world while their peers applaud them. They do so while happily accepting their reward. Marlon did this before it became a Hollywood fashion. He declined the award and was chastised by Hollywood for it. That's a true trailblazer and a boss right there. He was a man of his own principles and didn't care how people thought about him for it.

Bertolucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris. Marlon Brando’s character, Paul, rapes actress Maria Schneider’s character, Jeanne, using a stick of butter as lubricant. In a 2007 interview with the Daily Mail, Schneider said the scene wasn’t in the original script, and that Brando and Bertolucci had told her about it just before they began filming.
The scene is intended to be violent and disturbing, with Paul hitting Jeanne and penetrating her as she cries. But as Schneider made clear, the feelings of violation we see onscreen aren’t just acting - they’re real.
“I was so angry,” she said. “I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci.”

Marlon Brando is doing in the 70s, what all of Hollywood is doing today. The difference is he did it before it became "cool". He did it knowing he would face criticism instead of applause. He did while refusing the Award, as opposed to the fakes that do it for the applause, but only after they happily accept their reward. Was Marlon Brando a perfect human being? No, but he was a man of principle and he stood by those principles no matter the backlash. These actors today preach about the causes they want to champion, while they live in their bubble of wealth, not having a clue as to what's going on outside of it. Marlon was walking Dr Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement and received hate and death threats. He was boo'ed on this day because he disrupted their Hollywood fantasy with a bit of reality. This man is a straight up LEGEND.

Why didn't he say the speech himself? It could have had a bigger impact. Did Sacheen insisted on reading it herself? It probably was the case since Marlon Brando seems like a man of principles. It's sad it ended her career though because of racism.

The reason why he wasn't there, from his speech:
"I would have been here tonight to speak to you directly, but I felt that perhaps I could be of better use if I went to Wounded Knee to help forestall in whatever way I can the establishment of a peace which would be dishonorable as long as the rivers shall run and the grass shall grow."

@Bobba Frost There is not much 'pure' anything in the world now, that white, black, red, any color notion is outdated. Despite people identifying with one color, almost everybody is mixed and latinos from America have Native American blood in them, they are Native Americans, only they come from the south.
