- Just like any other drum, a single bass drum offers a huge variety of sounds.
Here's how you can reach them all.

Am I the only one that found the 3 pillows funny as I have never seen that much muffling in a bass drum before lol! That is cool though good examples here and my favorite is the port hole with no muffling then again that is what I do already so I am not surprised it was my favorite here. Also I preferred the medium tuning which again is about where I tune mine. Cool video and them Sonor’s sound killer!
Very nice test. Please note the editing error on video labels from 4:48 on, low tuning is high tuning, and from 5:26, high tuning is low tuning. Otherwise, excellent comparison.
Thank god someone said it, i was about to question my whole existance right now !!! 😭 ... xD
This is the best comparison I've seen so far, very helpful!
By far the most efficient and best sounding bass drum comparison video out there.
Will you make one for toms?
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!!!🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Thank you 🙏
Am i the only one who notice that he has different shoes?
No, saw it too
Why is he wearing different shoes do y’all think ?
@@paulstevens640 Idk lmao
No, I found it quite bothersome.
I had a gigging kit with no reso's. It was really loud, and really easy to 'tune'. But it was really easy to transport because the drums all fit inside each other and the cymbals fit in there too. Peeled the wraps off and stained the shells, dropped the weight considerably. All fit into one oversized home-made (thanks Mom) canvas bag. All the hardware in another bag and I could have everything from the car to inside the venue in one trip.
Good video! The one scenario I DIDN'T see/hear was the rolled towel against the reso head, but nothing against the batter head.
If you own a bass drum you can try this yourself.
If you don't own a bass drum you should get yourself a bass drum.
Dave Sharon I used to do that when I was younger in the 80’s simply because I did not know it usually would go on the batter head but it sounded killer regardless of me having it “backward”. No youtube instructional videos back then lol!
Fantastic video! Ive been looking around for bass muffling ideas and this video is one of the best.
My Bass drum sound is by far my greatest frustration. Good, simple and thorough video.
Excellent video !!! The demonstration was right on!
Sounds like the kid in The Shinning. "Tony says your bass drum needs more boom."
"reddrum"
"Redrum"
"Re-drum"
"Basssss drum"
The sound of my bass drum after putting 3 pillows sounds like a choked dog
Do dong It should.
Wow! This is such a great video for a quick reference on kick drum tuning! Great job!
Thank you! Very helpful!
No mention of the various sounds from different beaters on different kick pads. Different tuning is only the tip of the iceberg when considering bass sounds.
man i love the no reso and closed reso head sounds
Great video! Very instructional!😀👍
Nice video, very helpful. Thx!!!
nice comparison, very helpful. thank you
I Like content about Bass Drum😉
I use for the batter head an clear "Evans EQ 4" and for the Reso a black "Evans EQ 3 Reso" with pillow muffling on a cheap Bassdrum. sounds so great :D
Try the EMAD man, less pillow muffling and low tuning with emad is the way
@@lifeofapotato4595 ok, i try it next time, EMAD or EMAD2? :D should i try another reso too, if i take one of the EMAD´s?
@@wingelschweinchen7065 they're not massively different, the main thing about the EMAD is the inbuilt muffling strip with removable and replaceable foam rings on the batter head.
OP's point is that you could get away with less muffling inside the drum (maybe a small blanket on the reso if you're into a more dead sound, a lot of modern styles benefit from it), and you'll get a louder, more present sound as a result. I second his comment, EMADs are awesome.
The reso head isn't massively special tech, it should matter less and the one you have now should work just fine.
@@EpicStuffMan1000 Ok, thx for the answer! :)
I liked the med tuning single pillow with a port hole sound
I just use the muffle ring that’s built in the bass drum head nothing inside sounds boomy like the way I like it .
Great content. 👏🏻
This video just earned you a sub, no pun intended 😆
Maybe I’m wrong, but when you use that “extreme” muffling technique inside your drums it’s an ideal way to use triggers on your acoustic set. It worked for a buddy of mine back in the day I’m sure it still does. Btw he was muffling the crap out of his Tama rockstars to use some ddrum triggers. They felt weird when you played them, but trough the other side of the house pa they sounded beautiful.
Thats because he wasnt playing his drum set at that point... He was playing someone else's that sounded good
nice trick many tnx :)
Très utile ! Merci !
great video
Duuude, Sonor for the win! How do you like the Jojo Mayer pedal? I’m thinking about getting one
Great to hear a bass drum played without burying the beater into the head.
I always find it very funny when demos show the drummer burying the beater and then trying to hit it harder when they bury it.
Just makes a bigger choke sound to me! Thanks for your demonstration
muchisimas gracias por el video, ahora podre improvisar muchas mas tecnicas con estos tips...
Pd: falta hablar de los "beaters" de diferentes materiales ( felpa, madera, plastico )
pd2: espero que puedan traducirlo bien, porque MY ENGLISH IS VERY BAD
The weight and material of the bass drum pedal also changes the sound!
No muffling and high tension for a organic sound of wood
3 great examples, but how does the bass drum sounds using a kick port!?
waoo sounds good with or without cushion
Crazy it sounded lower with higher tuning. 😕
Adam Vaughn looks like it was an editing mistake
It wasn't, it has to do with the way the sustain is shortened the higher you tune a drum
@@TealTactics Don't listen to this Real Tactics guy. This is an editing mistake, pure and simple. Trust me, I'm a recording engineer, and have been for 12 years now. Listening to bass drums and tuning them higher and lower with all sorts of head combination is my entire professional life. If there's anything I know, it's this.
@@michaelcaplin8969 Agree. I'm into drum tuning. They didn't check the video twice.
@@michaelcaplin8969 Exactly. It sounds like Mr. Tactics is merely trying to throw in some pointless double talk to confuse those who have little or no experience with drums. As a drummer for over 30 years (got started as a kid), I too know the difference between LOW tuning and HIGH tuning. So, it was an editing mistake on the part of who created the video.
no muffling, no port hole best sounding
Depends what you want. The notes have a lot of sustain this way, so if you play a bass drum heavy beat, it might start to sound muddy, especially if you add a bass player to the mix.
trafango for certain styles of music, but not all.
if put acoustic foam for a studio inside the bass drum all around i think muffling sound at the end was great
4:46 is it just me or is the high and low tuning interchanged?
What do you mean by high and low tuning do you mean the tention
How sound amazing? Have a sonor BD and remo drum heads.
Tienen un canal en español ?
Higher is so good
What is the depth and size of the drum
I ask anyone. What sound do you like?
is this a 22" or 24" Bass drum?
High and Low tuning were back to front.
the sound of no reso head makes me wow
I've wondered...i think? The beater should not be exact center, but slightly off an inch or two. 🤔
No hole. Single ply heads with 2 felt strips. Tune a little higher and BOOM!
I live in an apartment and the folks living below me complain of vibrations. How can I reduce those? Would appreciate the information, thank you!!
Abhishek Joshi You can ask them to move- it’s the best method of reducing complaints
@@jerrytanenbaum5883 haha Jerry, I should perhaps. For the time being, I have removed the resonant head for my bass drums. I just feel inhibited due to this.
Abhishek Joshi True story - one of the great jazz drummers - Billy Higgins, was known for being able to play fast with strong intensity very quietly.
I read an interview with him in which he said he learned to do it because he lived in an apartment with lots of complaining neighbors. He refused to practice less - and instead just practiced all the time playing as quietly as he could.
He taught himself super control
So maybe you can turn your situation into a blessing.
@@jerrytanenbaum5883 thanks!
Build a floating floor for your drumkit to stand on
the blanket and curtains were missing
Cleyton Dorileo LOL, the 3 pillows had me laughing!
high tuning and low tuning are inverted, a correction should be good 'cause it's an usefull video...
Hay
But what about quadruple pillow
I was waiting for only pillow no bass drum.
3:10
2:30
Just realized how sucky my generic 20-20 40mm 32ohm headphones are
I’m only watching this because I can’t tell the difference between a bass drum and a snare drum and I need to know for music 😃
As Charlie Watts said " I dont tune me bloody drums...I beat on them why would I tune them"...
No front head best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remo powersonic wins for me
AMJ Remos are kings!
Triple pillow? Seriously?
Might be good for if you had a real subby bass line that you were trying not to muddy
That’s what I have it’s lit
Clint Carothers I know it seems extreme, but it works wonderful when you wanna use triggers on a acoustic set. At least it worked for a buddy of mine back in the 90’s.
put a whole couch instead.
