I built two cabins (starting four years ago), a camper shell frame, a stairway, and cover for my trailer, a solar equipment cabinet......carports etc. all out of the top rail and fittings starting with a greenhouse 10 years ago. It's like an erector set, you can do anything with it. Strong, and those same fittings for larger size pipe jumps up in price astronomically. Best alternative period. Virtually no corrosion on our wet hot acidic corrosive environment here in Hawaii as well. Those end caps are really strong, though they are aluminum. I've tested it all in makeshift setups through many intense storms. Aloha!
Now I have to look at all the parts I have left over from putting u the fence in 2004 and there are alot of them great job and up on my hilltop house I get alot of wind THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO I may do one for over my firewood but modified and also thinking small greenhouse Geeze my ideas are going wild now
WOW! I stumbled upon your channel via You Tube. What a great idea and follow through. I am hooked, on your problem and solution on this video. Carry On Sir!
Suggestion. IF you are in any kind of snow load area. Put 4x4s under the connection that is using the Antenna Mast brackets. Drifting snows will build up at the top of your new shed against the older carport. Otherwise it looks fantastic. I hope it lasts you a long time.
I did almost the identical same thing as you . First I used the galvanized pipes (EMT) and all the unions and a really heavy duty patio cover, but the strong storm took it down eventually. I now have rebuilt it out of lumber and steel. I used 2" x 6" for rafters, with 2" x 4" perlins and 4" x4" posts. I used construction screws on everything so I am able to completely take it apart if I ever need to. And short of a tornado, I don't think it will ever come down.
@CampandCamera You Sir, are a GENIUS!!! This is exactly what I need for my new 6x10 HotDog vending trailer that I made from an old utility trailer! It doesn't have a roof and tarps sag and collect standing water! THANK YOU! If possible, provide parts costs??
You are doing a great service my friend. I am going to use this method to build my garden shed yoo!! 1 question though. If I only have a wood structure WHAT DO I USE TO MOUNT TO THE BUILDING WITH?? please excuse caps I wanted to make it easier to discern my question. .
It looks like it turned out great. Hopefully you don't live in an area that gets any real snow accumulation. Only my opinion, but I would have made the roof at a little steeper angle. That would be less of a concern in the case of snow load. Good job..!
I just used the same type type of stuff to make a cover for my deck. I anchored the posts to the 4x4 posts. I used top rail posts for all the piping. It collapsed in the middle, ripped some of the post from the 4x4's. Bummer. When it gets light I will examine it better. I did not think of using the bigger pipe as the legs. it did not blow away it collapsed?
Love the project! Sorry if it’s already been asked but why do you use the top rail for the rafters and not just stick with all more heavy duty posts for everything? Thx, OzarkMark
@@no_handle_required I tied this into an existing structure. I don’t know how well it would do as freestanding. Also, I haven’t had snow since I did this one. Heavy snow loads may cause sagging. If so, I’ll need to added more bracing. Also, be sure to check if it meets building codes in your area.
Very ingenious. What was the total cost of using the fencing material and various connections versus what the contractor wanted$ What was that quote? $4,100? How much did you save overall?
Nice job on the carport lean-to. Can you please tell me what type of self tapping screws you used? I have a ShelterLogic Portable garage and the tarp has failed on it. I want to screw pole barn metal to the frame. I think the frame is probably as thick as the chain link posts that you used.
@@kenzeigler1382 The place you buy your pole barn metal from will also sell you the screws. The screws you need will come painted to match and have a rubber washer under the head. Just make sure they sell you self-tapping for metal and not the ones for wood.
@@revbikerbigd8664 I framed it in a day and a half. It took a day to put the tin on. Now that I’ve done it once, I could do it again over a weekend. I’m a DIY’er, so I would absolutely do it again. I’ll have to give an update this winter about how well it does or doesn’t handle snow.
How did you get some pitch on the roof. The corner brackets don’t bend. Did you buy angled brackets? And do you have to deal with snow? Regardless, a great video as those standard parts can be had at good prices.
Thanks for sharing, its given me great ideas to build a roof between 2 box truck boxes for my tractor shed and storage shed!

Great idea. I find that I can buy most of the fence parts at a commercial chain link fence company for a considerable amount less than Amazon.
That thar is a rite smart fella puttin that thar tarnado bait out away from his home....good man, I like it.
Great idea. I used to build goat cages out of top rail and cattle panels. I like the idea of your braces.

Brilliant! TFS. I also would have trimmed or removed that side sheet and went a foot or two higher.
Ingenious! May do this myself. Thinking of adding 1x4 to rafters as purlins for roof. Thank you for the video!

I built a 10x40 out of EMT and it has survived 60-70 mph winds, no problem. Mine is covered w/ lattice. Looks pretty.
Instead of a tension band on the rail end lug you should use a brace band this made for that purpose.
Having built many chain link configurations…. Nice job!
Nice project. Did find myself wondering how you are, so pleased to see you back.
Glad you are back!
@@claytonsaunders3177 Thank you!

Do you have any ideas for attaching this to a shipping container?
Thanks!
Nice job on the grading and rolling on that site.

Not sure how cost effective it would be over tin but pvc cut length wise yo cap tarp over pipe would hold pretty good i would think
My canvas tent came with brackets like that..we used the metal electrical conduit...
GREAT !

Pretty ingenious use of alternative materials to build your lean to. You mentioned $4100 for a commercial lean to, what did this one cost ya?
$5000.00
Salvage parts
Welcome back!!
Do yourself a GIANT favor. Put pool noodles
Or something on the braces. ( You’ll probably never guess why I’m suggesting this). 😵
We have chickens so we put pool noodles on top of the gate, so they won't fly up there and escape from their fence.

What pipe is used for the vertical post, and the feet?
If I am not being "nosey" What was your materials cost with it as it now sits? I am thinking about doing this for my RV storage at the house...
Where did you get the feet?
It's outdoors, it's not attached to the house, and it's considered temporary. Code enforcement can take a hike.
Well we know the other is $4,100, what is the breakdown for the tube frame with metal roof $ ?

The brackets came angled. We get snow, but usually only around 6 to 8”. I may do a mod or two if it starts to bow or bend under a snow load.
