    I have a farm. I am north of 65 years old. I've done a lot of fencing. I watched your process in making your fence. You didn't do exactly as I did, but your planned use and your terrain is much different than mine. I kept my mouth shut because you were doing just fine. In today's society there are too many people who have never done anything but think their way is the only right way to do anything. My suggestion is ignore the nay-sayers and carry on doing as you are. Thank you for your videos, I'm looking forward to your pole barn build.

      It is crazy on how people are nowadays, I was raised that if you did not have anything to say nice do not say anything. But with todays instant social media and not being face to face but sitting behind a keyboard there are a lot of keyboard cowards nowadays. Great statement and it is too bad on how we as a society have changed to the worse as I see it...

    Videos like this is why I love this channel. This couple is up front about learning farming and show the good decisions along with the not so good. The best thing is they educate themselves from multiple sources including critics. Keep up the great work Evan and Rebecca you are building a fantastic piece of property.

    Your a kind young man this country needs moor people like you. You are definitely kinder than most people are towards critics. We should all strive to be this civil to critics. I have lived on farms. I am over 65 years old. I've done a lot of fencing. I watched your process in making your fence. You didn't do exactly as I have, but you planned use and your terrain is much different than I have worked on. You are doing just fine. You have learned from mastics. In today's society there are too many people who don’t do anything but think they can do anything and every thing better than the person doing something. Thank you for your videos, I'm looking forward to your pole barn build. The only people that don’t make mastics are the ones that don’t do anything!

    JudithB I had a farm, and now a homestead--all needed different types of fencing. I put barb wire at the bottom of welded fencing to keep hogs in a small pasture, and one strand at the top to keep the cows and horses from scratching on the wire. I just did a simple barb wire fence here to keep my horses in and people with cars out. I wish I had put welded wire in to keep out dogs tho!! I think the tools you used will last you forever so are a great investment, and the fence is also a great investment and should last many years. I use hammers and fence pliers for about everything, and come alongs are very handy too! LOL I weave a tpost down thru woven wire, attach a chain and tighten with the truck or tractor-- does the job but not as pretty as your fencing! I like seeing new ways!!

    Evan, adding some heavy rip rap to the culvert at the screen should not cause any blockage of flow, it would do a nice job of adding to the security keeping out predators and would be inexpensive. The fence job looks challenging in the weather but looks like you and Rebecca did a good job that should be low maintenance over at least 25 years.

    Great video. you did a lot of homework and I can say... that fence isn't going anywhere. looks a lot better than mine. As someone that has cattle, one thing I have learned with your style of fence. Cattle like to rub or itch especially in the spring as they lose their winter hair. ours like to rub their necks on the top of the woven wire and it stretches and bends it down over time. if you see this happening, we resolved it by running a strand of barbed wire just above the top of the woven.

  • @markfin7225

    Good job on the fence. The traditional barb wire at ground level is to stop rooting pigs from digging under the fence. If your threaded hinges drop or loosen, swap them out for bolted hinges. You just drill through the post and nut and washer the bolt on each side of the post. Looks good.

    Just came across this fencing video and I am about to undertake the same process at our homestead. Roughly the same distance if fence line, different shape it looks like. I thank you for the link to the fence stretcher, I have been looking for where to order that style from. Once I get the new chicken coop(s) done then comes fencing! I have been starting to collect the materials and wow, you are right when you say a lot of the cost is in posts.

    The corner where the fence was stretched around the corner needs to be stapled down on the post. That will take out a lot of the slack. I think the fence looks good. • @ronaldlee2376
    @ronaldlee2376 4 роки тому

    You may want to consider installing cattle panel at tile outlet as well, racoon/ground hogs will run into same to hide while being chased by predators. When they try to turn around they become lodged in pipe due to corrigation of pipe. If heavy rains come before carcass has deteriorated it stops the flow. Learned that the hard way.

  • @ohhpaul7364
    @ohhpaul7364 4 роки тому +1

    Agri-Drain sells a product they call a beaver guard for their pipes that goes on the outlet side of drain pipes. it is just a set of rebar on a hinge so that any big material that goes through the pipe flushes out but nothing can come into the pipe, you just have to drill a few holes or use the band clamp type.

    I think many people are quick to forget exactly why and what are they fencing for! There is a huge difference between fencing for cattle and even then thought has to be given to the size of stock needing to be fenced in. Right now you have goats and poultry but you hope to fence for cattle in the near future. ............ and what about perhaps pigs?
    Both Rebecca and Evan are away from the premises daily and they need peace of mind that the livestock are secure when they are not there. I do think Evan you should have a separate additional chain and padlock on the new gate near the house - cattle will rub on gates etc and it could result in escaped livestock.
    One last point that few have thought about fences work in two ways a) keeping stock in the field AND b) keep wildlife out of the field especially creatures such as foxes. Chickens are like Christmas Lunch to them if they can get to the poultry!

    I noticed you have one pin up and one pin down on your gate for the henge.... I realize you do that so the cows can't root it up like a pig would and dis lodge the gate.... however ...in all the years we ran cows back at the Ranch we never had a cow knock off the gate...they did figure out how to un lock the gate so we ran a chain and spring clip to stop that.... but they never messed with the henge.... having 2 points acting as weight support ( if you measure carefully)
    is alot better than one and it is so much easier it you want to get the gate out of the way completely...which does happen. you can just unlock the gate walk to the middle and lift it up taking it off the hinges.... putting it back on takes 2 people but it is far easier getting a wide implement through a skinny gate if the gate is completely removed . but the critters never messed with the hinged end of the gate.... their smart enough to check to see if you locked it
    though, but sense you never go to the henge side neither do they...
    .... Your fences are far superior to what ours were by far, so people should listen to your wisdom on this... we used 4 strands of bob wire for our cows and yes they frequently got out
    we switched to 6 strands in problem areas and got rid of the fence braking cow ! once they learn how to get out they will teach the others and you will not keep them in. out of desperation we switched to 4' hog wire and 2 strands of bob wire on top that worked !
    Our horses were the worst offenders I watched out Mustang lean into the fence so hard and then back away and examine it until she could step over it without scratching her belly !
    ( she wanted into the garden !!!) that is why you put posts every 10' not 20' or more they will stretch the fence and get out !

    You do it the way you like. Figure you fence lifetime about 25 years. Thats what the fence we currently have is now and are replacing it as we get time and money.i dont want to have to replace it when I am 85. So we are taking out the post and rail, replacing with field fence, braces and Tposts like you did, and around the yard is post and rail backed with welded wire fencing. The garden and pasture gets 6ft chain link(it was given to us)

    Is that a farm cat at 5.07?, it seemed very big, Sidney noticed it at 5.23 and raced round the field, and one of the dog was having a lot to say, trying to tell you something, You know "little jonny has fell down the well and broke his leg" lol.

    A stamp set to let you punch info into a copper or aluminum data plate for the start and stop points of the fence. Will you remember what dates you installed the fence in 10 years? 20 years?
    Also great when you are putting fencing along a property line as you can include things like is it on the line or offset by how many inches and Was it paid by one side or both sides paid for it?
    As for where to get the copper you can always cut open scrap copper pipes for sections to flatten or buy a roll of copper flashing to cut sections off.

    I think alot ideologies about fencing is a regional/cultural thing. Of course you're right about it depending on the animals being kept too. When immigrants were first settling America their farming methods and practices varied greatly. Some didn't use livestock barns, some did their hay differently, even their log homes were very noticeably different. Fencing is no different and I think yours looks great. It certainly is well built, serves it intended purpose, and will most likely last as long as you will.

    Evan, I for one think you and Rebecca did an excellent job on the fence. As other commentators have said, some folks are not happy unless they complain (bitch) about the work you do. Your farm, do it the way you want.

    we put a strand of barbed wire on the bottom and a strand of barbed wire on the top. bottom to keep varmits out, top to keep the cows from reaching over the fence and mashing it down...
