  • Natural wine, low-fi wine, or wine made with minimal additives was initially dismissed as a fad. But this small-scale winemaking style is having an outsized impact on the wine scene, as Landline reported in 2021.

"Funky" is not a descriptor I want with my wine. Fizzy is fine if it is a sparkling. There is a prevalent myth out there that wineries add a ton of chemicals to their wines and that just isnt true. Yes, sulfites are usually added for preservation but you get more in most foods you eat than what is in the wine. I agree with limiting chemicals in the fields because I like having drinkable water, but the rest of "Natural Wine" fans claims are mostly bogus. I have nothing wrong with Natural Wine (whatever that is, since there is no rules) and people who like it. What I have a problem with is the exaggerations they make.

The chemical additions start in the vineyards from what the plants are sprayed with to what the plants are fed many horrendous chemicals are used in the vineyards, grapes are crushed sulphite is added, acidity is checked then balanced with chemicals, clarified with chemicals filtered and more sulphite added, flavoured with oak chips or fake oak essence, sweetened with sugar, the use of colouring is also very common, there are around 300 chemicals depending on your country that are acceptable to be added to wine, granted much of this manipulation is on cheaper wines but big houses also use these methods for pure consistency then you get to 'natural wine' the vines are sprayed with essential oils and the ground treated with organic natural ferments, the grapes go into the winery washed crushed, fermented, rested and bottled, sometimes with sulphur added to stabilise it. now tell me what you'd rather drink? what are the bogus claims and exaggerations you've heard?

Often 'natural wine' is a term used to justify having a drink

This is not wine... It is juice. Come talk to me after a bottle has been in the cellar 30+ years and still tastes magnificent.

That bottle was full of herbicides and pesticides probably. Up to you to call that magnificent. Nah but for real there are very good and old natural wines that stay good in the cellar. You did no homework

This is the definition of wine you won't find anything more wine than these things you also won't find many wines even from first growth Bordeaux that are 'magnificent' after 30 years and can you imagine the sorts of things they used to add to wines 30 years ago to keep them stable! I don't want to wait 30 years to drink something either

There are many different types of wines. Learn to appreciate each for its own character?

18 to 28 year old Hipsters are the demographic buying these wines? Really? No wonder they can’t afford a house! Pure snobbery, I was drinking the humble goon box back in the day not slugging a 30 buck bottle of natural wine.

But instead of drinking the whole box of goon. The hipsters are enjoying the bottle between three people and that's all the drinking for the week
