She was so young and for those roles perfect! One only could wish to be born earlier to follow her carreer. I saw her first in 1995 as Santuzza and was completely hypnotised, especially because she is one of a very few singer-actresses. Whatever she had performed over the years, she did it with extase... On stage she is not Baltsa, but Carmen, Santuzza, Eboli or Isabella ... in private she is warm, funny ... I am and will always be proud to met her several times as Agnes! Brava for all she gave!
The young Baltsa with her beautiful unique timbre is an ideal Cherubino. My favorite along with Maria Ewing.
Non so più quel che dico quel che faccio Ogni cuore mi fa palpitar... musica e poesia eccezionali!

I love her especially in this repertoire. Not so much in the heavier rep.

They are the very best singers at that time,1980. Agnes Balza, Lucia Popp, and Janowitz, Prey, Karl Boehm , Vienna Staatsoper !!!!!! How amazing ! It is really astonishing and I am proud (as a Japanese) that with those singers and players Le Nozze di Figaro was played at TOKYO JAPAN !

Baltsa is exceptional
She is a soubrette, not a mezzo and this role is written for a voice like this.
She has such a big bold mature voice... how can you call this a soubrette? watch her performance of "Nel giardin del bello". She's a dramatic mezzo
@@ajaymanoharan5496 she's never had a big voice and not a mezzo. Dramatic mezzo is Obraztsova, Barbieri, Dominguez... compare Baltsa's voice with these women she has a light tiny voice just with a lot of darkened chest notes.

But in Don Carlo, Baltsa's voice sounded so big... maybe the recording?

@@ajaymanoharan5496 I've never liked Cossotto but she also sounds a dramatic soprano to me. Ludwig is big ranged mezzo IMO, she had great dark low notes.
Baltsa makes her voice to sound mezzoish and darker than it naturally is, she has naturally a light voice she was trained as a soprano in college. She decided to be a coloratura mezzo and became very clever, great artist and performer but I think the voice is not mezzo. ok,soubrette was a bit exaggerated from me :D
Certainly she is a soprano. She sang Carmen's Habanera, mostly in a chest voice. haha'
