ESSEN: AFD party conference starts - 80,000 counter-demonstrators expected at massive protests!
North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) is expecting around 80,000 counter-demonstrators at the AfD federal party conference in Essen this weekend. Violent troublemakers from the left-wing extremist scene are also expected among the demonstrators. Reul explained to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) that several hundred of these troublemakers have carried out action training across the country to practice blockade actions. He appealed to all peaceful demonstrators to clearly distance themselves from violent actions.
The operation represents a particular challenge for the police, as on Saturday - the day of the largest protests - the German national football team will be playing in the European Championship round of 16 in Dortmund. This means an additional burden for the security forces, who have to monitor both the demonstrations in Essen and the football match in Dortmund.
The AfD party conference, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, will elect a new executive board, among other things. Numerous organizations have announced that they will hold rallies, demonstrations and meetings throughout the weekend to protest against the AfD meeting. The police are preparing for a challenging weekend to ensure the safety of all involved and to prevent possible violent clashes.
