  • In this video we're comparing Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails, performing Joy Division's 'Dead Souls'. It's been a while since we've done a Joy Division song, and we were curious what NIN would do with one of their songs. This should be fun. Enjoy!

Joy Division for me. I liked the more rough around the edges sound and it was instrumentally more creative and interesting, especially rhythmically.

Glad that Cynthia obviously got into the Joy Division version - its an amazing track. The tone of the guitars is just so good - dark but rich, powerful - even a little groovy. This is how I like my coffee

NIN does a solid cover of this, but for me the urgency, and I think, much darker edge to the Joy Division take is just unforgettable. For me, this hasn't lost any of the gut punch feeling that it had in 1980. Great comparison and upload.

Far from being fond of Joy Division and Ian Curtis, I recognize that "Dead Souls" is one of their very best pieces and at least their interpretation was lively and convincing while the NIN cover is soft, without relief, the drum part linear and Trent Reznor's singing lifeless, while Ian Curtis' vocal delivery was felt and haunted. Well, anyway I don't care about NIN😉.

Two great bands but the original is definitely the one for me. NIN do a version of Adam Ants "Physical". RevCo (Revolting C0cks) do a great version of Rod Stewarts "Do You Think I'm Sexy".

Wow, what a haunting song from Ian Curtis and love Peter Hook's lead Bass. I prefer the original but do like what Trent did on the vocals in his cover. Appeciate both your guys reactions. I always learn a lot about the construction of the songs. Also thrilled I got something more then 'Well that was interesting' from Cynthia!

By slowing it down and taking some of the harshness out of the guitars, Trent took some of the fire and anger out of the song, but gave it a feeling of melancholy acceptance.

Joy Division is all about (dark) emotions, and that’s why I love them. There’s only one Joy Division cover I know, where I doubt which one is better. Isolation, covered by the Irish punkband Therapy?.

Thank you so much again! Delilah & now this! My favourite Joy Division track. He can't really sing, but it doesn't matter, he expresses so much genuine pain & emotion, & it's emotional honesty that I value most in a singer. This song powerfully evokes vivid images for me; unearthly, desperate, longing.
The NIN version is good, it just doesn't have that same honesty for me - Cynthia is bang right about the OTT screaming.

Yes, Curtis was far from a great singer, but there are still a very good handful of moments in JD's catalog where his voice sends shivers down your spine. It could be added that he is also far from the only front man of an acclaimed rock/pop band who no one would ever confuse with Sinatra or any other great singer you care to name.

A seminal band such as Joy Division (for me, along with Wire and Pere Ubu, one of my all time favourite bands from that era) was always going to be covered many times by future bands and artists and have been; so from well known acts such as Moby, covering ‘New Dawn Fades’ to the less well known Diabologum’s take on ‘Transmission’ and all points in between there have been a plethora of, erm…cover versions. But. Nothing has topped, or will top the Joy Division originals…IMHO.

I'm always late to the party on these types of videos, but I'll give my opinion anyway. This is like trying to compare the LOTR books to Peter Jackson's LOTR movie trilogy. Peter Jackson's trilogy is a brilliant adaptation of a masterpiece, crafted with care and respect for the source material. I think the NIN cover is like PJ's trilogy. But I prefer the original over the cover. I connect with it on a deeper level. PS. Love the Rush shirt!

I used to know a Rochdale guy who did session work with Joy Div and some of the other Factory early bands.
He didn’t like working with Ian C.
But introduced me to A Certain Ratio
A pretty tight band from back in the day and Section 25 and The Duritti Column.
For any covers of Joy Div will always be second best.
Still have most of their original albums from that era but usually play their cds to preserve the vinyl.
    Great review.

Never thought Joy Division were that talented to be fair they have a few stand out tracks like Transmission & Atmosphere which are fantastic but the one thing you could never deny them was their huge influence on music and Curtis dark vocals which I'm sure Kurt Cobain took a lot of influence from.
I live near Peter Hook I have bumped into him and his wife on a number of occasions , One time he asked me if I was a fan of Joy Division I said no but I like a few of your tracks he said good for you I'm sick of people applauding us because half the stuff we did was crap.

Hook isn't always to be believed. I'll leave it at that.
I think Joy Division was a great band, but no one would ever claim they were the most virtuosic band. However, they clearly grew as musicians in their short history. And the quality of New Order (a band I also rate highly) is testament to the talents of three quarters of Joy Division.

I do love me some JD, I do like the original and the NIN is a new step forward. If you want some haunting stuff I got some maybe you could compare "Alabama Song" by "The Doors (Original)" and Artery's cover of it too. I gotta say they both are different and unique.
This also would give you both an introduction to Artery, UK Sheffield Post Punk / New Wave band. They have been compared to Joy Division but they are more than Joy Division. You guys won't be disappointed.
Doors (Original) vs Artery (1983 Cover) - Alabama Song
(These 3 tracks are the essential of Artery)
Artery - Into the Garden (1981)
Artery - The Slide (Peel Session 1982)
Artery - Afterwards (Peel Session 1981)
Thank you guys for the reactions! Can't wait to see and hear your reactions on these!

The NIN version is done with a great deal of love and respect ....Trent Reznor is one of the biggest Joy Division fans on the planet, ,but it doesnt match the majesty and execution of the original for me.
Joy Division were a super Important band to me growing up, so I may be somewhat biased!
I cant remember what other JD songs have been done on the channel, but, Love Will Tear Us Apart is the obvious one, Atmosphere, and Disorder.
They became New Order after the death of frontman, Ian Curtis. So you could always go down that road, there's a lot to cover there. Plus the various side projects, Electronic, Revenge etc

You might be right about the effect Curtis' death has had on the long-term appeal of this band.
They certainly had a lot of 'help', from signing for a label run by a high-profile TV presenter (Tony Wilson), having a producer (Martin Hannett) who presented their music in a certain way (certainly different to their raw, frenetic 'live' sound), to the artsy photography and packaging by Peter Saville and the like.
The one thing about the band that couldn't be contrived, of course, was the dramatic career and untimely death of Ian Curtis himself.
