For what it's worth, MCDM has been pretty thoroughly documenting their design process for Patrons and on Twitch, and so far it seems clear that they are starting "from scratch" and not striving for any compatibility with 5e rules content.
I hadn't kept up with the process. This sounds exciting. We have, and will have, 5e clones come to market. MCDM has the space to Do The New without loss of fans or income or devalued inventory. Thanks for the update!
Great overview, I've been really intrigued by a5e - it seems like it's doing a lot of things right
Getting rid of race in favor of culture makes way more sense and is less rooted in biological truthism which we desperately need less of in the TTRPG scene
Also really dig the math of how classes are balanced around the way a player plays and not around the vague concept of "well wizards should be better than fighters at late levels"
And definitely appreciate that the character creation process is more fleshed out with more points of customization, like pf2e, while keeping all the compatibility with every product and book that came before
Also, those 4 Pillars of Lethality you've mentioned in A5E are the things which made me come back to 5E to run it.... along with the rule on "massive" damage....20 + triple your level or more, causes Con Save (DC 15) or Die. I will say that Crafting just being a Dex thing is something I may not stick with....Wis or Int should maybe play some role in it....IMHO-ONLY.

I know there are cool things in it, but I have noticed that perhaps they do not have very good customer service/contact followup, as it takes days for them to even reply to emails or even FB contacts.... if they do at all. Disappointing, because otherwise this is pretty doggone cool.
1. I dont think removing peaks and valleys is all that good. 2. I REALLY hate the notion of separating biologiy from the ASIs or other traits that I think were fine to be with Race. I am fine wtih Backgrounds giving more stuff, but Race should factor into inherent strengths. 3. When people say smoothing out, it usually is code for nerfing the crap out of things....so I am skeptical but I'd have to check for myself. 4. I like the idea of martials getting more options, but I dont thin that its neessary that they have parity to casters. In fact, they shouldnt.
I came here to say this. The "anti-racist" view that race doesn't matter has killed a big part of the fantasy landscape, in my eyes.
They are different RACES, not different applications of face paint or colors of skin.
That poorly disguised political nonsense is enough for me to kill the desire I had to look into this system.
@@abettermind I agree. In the real world, one's skin tone is NOT a different race. Sorry, its just another trait for all us humans. Like eye color or height. If you are 6 feet tall you arent another race of human. You're just a tall human. But in the fantasy world an elf is CLEARLY a different race than a human, and as such, do and should have different traits. I am even a bit sad to see negative traits be removed if only cause it helped to show that different races has diferent strengths and weaknesses. Humans were all-rounders, but not exceptional to the level of strength as orcs or agility such as elves on the average. And then the change from "Race" to "species" is just such a stupid "woke" red meat scrap that it means nothing. People are just pansies.
There's legitimate reason to change from race to species. Mainly that race is a social construct without any biological meaning. I've thought of it sort of like sex (biological) vs. gender (cultural construct).
It may be woke or whatever, but moving away from poorly defined and problematic language is also more accurate to the real world understanding of these ideas. None of this is to defend A5E or other systems, but wanted to say that the trend has actual meat and merit, not just theater.
@@FrankyFigs88 I disagree but I will respect that you actually have a an intelligent opinion on the matter. I just think its another case of the PC police getting upset over something that was NEVER an issue and isnt an issue unless people are overly sensitive. Its silly to me and unnecessary when there are other things that could have been thought about and wasnt it.
A5e is not balanced for 5e.
Not balanced for 5e. Balanced internally, as a design function of itself.
