  • In this video I have a look at a 2008 GMC Envoy that was dropped off from another shop with a customer complaint of poor running, no acceleration, service engine soon light on, reduced power light and many more. Evidently this happened after car sat for about a month. -Enjoy!

The funny thing is, with schematics and his scan tool that can see inputs and live data, its not hard to track down eletrical issues. The other shops should be able to do this. They are a legitimate mechanic shop afterall
I say its easy but I also have a computer science degree and had to learn electronics repair so i use those skills when diagnosing vehicles also. So maybe its hard for others even though they should be trained to repair vehicles properly if they are a legit shop.

  • @Wayne-Jones

As an ex British Airways Engineer Mr O, you can tell the guy that criticised your crimp repair that the next time he’s on a flight to think of all the hundreds of crimp cable repairs thats currently on the Aircraft, does he think we pull the cable along it’s whole length from the aircraft and replace it.
Depending on the application we use solder sleeves and inline crimps, heat shrink sealed of course.
But I will say it’s strictly regulated, you must use the correct crimp for wire size and the appropriate crimp tool, and staggered so they don’t lay on top of each other.
You can’t pull over up there Mr O 👍
    Great diag as usual.

I have to say this as a state-certified electrical engineer with over 20 years of professional experience:
These crimp connectors with the heat shrink tubing and the adhesive are the best, if not the only permanent solution to repairing a broken wire in the car.
Anything that has the word "soldering" in its name has no place in a car - except everything that is absolutely hard-fixed to the chassis (PCM, ECM, every other component with a PCB).
But as Eric already said, due to the vibrations in the car, the copper wires break again exactly at the soldering point.
A wire cannot be hard-fixed to the chassis - so it will always move due to the vibrations!
That's one of the things that really convinced me right away about Eric, that he's a "good guy" and knows what he's doing. 👍

Like you demonstrated, never assume that something is okay just by looking at it. Who would have thought those wires would have been pinched. Loved that "aha" moment! Another great video. You are a true professional. I sure hate to deal with the parts changers at some dealers. I try to do as much of my own work as I can. I have a 2015 Impala LT with the dreaded 3.6 engine. I change my oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months. I know these engines have their timing chain issues. I laugh when you talk about the constant parade of Chevys that come in to your shop. I have 70,000 miles on it, so it's low mileage. I keep waiting for the hammer to fall. Ugh. It has been great so far. Keep up the great work. You really should go into teaching when you get older . I love those connectors. I worked for many years for a concrete supplier. With cleaning acid on those trucks it was tough keeping the green crusties away. I never had any luck with those solder type connectors as getting the heat right in tight places never happened. They almost always split before the solder melted and I tried all sorts of heat sources. Also fiddling around tring to get solder types to work was so much slower. We had mostly electronic engines and transmissions and never had problems with using crimp/glue connectors.

that is pretty much all I / we used: once in a while did one mend a wire, solder it together, lead in wire, done that many times in large wire anchors, batt cables. for years in commercial trades, replace batt posts that nuked off, Cat. and everywhere else I used them, when need be: electrical mechanical before the PC world moved it, Made in the USA. we taped, seldom heat shrink tubing, My job was chasing out the previous guys handy work, in our line of work it was all about keeping that seat filled with the operator. fix it right later, so was the reason we had a second shift back tracking. You do awesome work Eric, those guys going hard off the deep end most likely fall way short of being much more then a mouth piece. You know what works and it will last..................

Great diagnostics Eric ... so many problems with broken wires these days that even Mrs. O can guess it ... I enjoy your videos so much I was unaware we were allowed to critique your broken wire repair(s) .... and although I've always liked the heat sealing crimp connectors, I'm not a fan of the pink color ... I would have spray painted it yellow and shipped it after I verified the fix was good ... I've also lost a little sleep at night wondering why liquid insulation only comes in 2 colors, black and red ???? ... and like you, I often give the bundle a light coat of Fluid Film before closing it up to prevent future corrosion ... I'm not a professional mechanic, but born into the business and only fix my own cars (and/or friends/neighbors) ... as for the critics and people loosing their lunch .. at 66 I often tell people .. "I can fix anything ... but people" .... I often imagine the other local shops running into a tricky problem, then one of the wiser mechanics saying ... "Hey, go check UA-cam and see if SMA/Eric has a video on this ! " ... one of my favorite quotes in life was from Michelangelo ... when he was older and famous people would gratuitously heap praise on him ... and he would often humbly reply ... "I am still learning" ... and that speaks volumes about his approach to life ...

Been using the crimp connectors with hot glue in the marine repair world for years and wouldn't use anything else. You are correct. Using the correct crimper and melting the glue is key to success. The solder shrink connectors are useless on tarnished copper wire. In the saltwater marine world just about all wire is tarnished after 10 plus years in service. Anyone who growls at using the glued crimp connectors is probably a hobbyist.
