This year, Perceptions, led by Nathan Cho ’24, Uyen Nguyen ’24, Cynthia
France ’24, Arely Sun ’26, and Darwin Cai ’26, is excited to present a set
following an Asian/American individual’s journey toward self-acceptance and liberation from norms. Our story first grapples with the ways Asian/American individuals can often be cast onto one dimensional definitions of desire - through feelings of undesirability and unworthiness but also through histories of hypersexualization. Exploring, then, the confusion that accompanies the journey to understanding and redefining our sexualities against historically imposed norms, we come to celebrate self-discovery and carve out spaces of meaning for ourselves in this celebration, which we express through an energetic finale. Sex and sexuality can often feel like taboo conversations, addressed with an uncomfortable, negative connotation. However, we want to challenge this stigma to create an open, informed dialogue that challenges societal norms on intimacy, fosters understanding, and promotes healthy attitudes towards sexuality.
