  • For those in the market for a new KLR650 before it stops production, you may want to consider a used KTM 950 instead. I recently had an opportunity to ride the KTM 950 Adventure and was extremely impressed. Very similar to the KTM 990 but a carbuerated version and that helps keep the price closer to a new KLR650. So be sure to watch the video where we share our opinion and thoughts about the KTM 950 and why potential KLR 650 buyers might be interested in this bike.

    For lack of better terms, I rescued a 2006 950 Adv from its second owner. Talked him down to $4000. Put about $1500 in parts and much of my time in labor. Bottom line, Ive owned a 2016 R1200GS and currently own a 2017 F800GSA. I find myself going for the KTM almost every ride. This actually was an interesting step in bikes-going back 13 years into the past. I threw the street tires back on my F800 and ride that to work as a commuter now. Problem is, I keep going for the 950 for the commute as well and the Anakees are wearing down fast 😂

    I,thought that the 950 carb model had a similar smoother throttle response than the 990. ??

      Keep in mind I’ve only ridden one of each so it could be the specific 950 I rode but between the two I liked the 990 better. It felt smoother in terms of the throttle response.

      mark anstey i rode both the 990 and 950 and i can tell you the 950 is deffenately smoother in throttle response, especially when you open the throttle a tiny bit at tactical offroad like single tracks, the 950 is way better
      I decided to keep the 950 instead of the 990. It’s an awasome bike
      However i made a testride with a 790 adventure R which is also a awesome bike, i don’t think i will sell the 950

    Kdemotorsports, you are a very good presenter but why do you always talk away from the camera? It is really irritating to watch, just talk to the camera man please.That is an out dated style and nobody likes it trust me.

      This is a challenge because I don’t have a cameraman. The cameras are fixed so my options are to jump cut or cut to an angle that I’m not looking at. There are many schools of thought in terms of which is more or less distracting. I don’t ever nail these in one take so therefore I have to pick one of the options and some people don’t like one and others don’t like the other.

    I went from a 08 klr 650.. To a ktm smr 950...love the klr was my favorite.. I went through a green light and someone went through a yellow.. The I went through their windshield.. Needless to say..RIP to the klr..found a KTM in Texas...the KTM stands for keep taking money..I love the bike...but its left me stranded more then once... U have to do schedule maintenance... Impeller shaft seal needs replacing it wears a grove in the shaft that let's coolent mix with the oil...and it sucks a lot of gas..but u have a lot of HP..I got about 110😀😀🙌🙌...hold on to your bootstraps... The klr is awesome... Need to do the doohickey... But its solid reliable... Go across the US no worries...KTM u have worries.. ..I love them booth...I will never get rid of the KTM... Its just amazing

    how can we compare the 2?
    Ktm has more than twice the power, About the same weight, adjustable suspension, way better brakes, its a twin cylinder....the only thing possible to compare is the price of a used KTM against new KLR...

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  5 років тому +1

      That’s exactly what the comparison was. For the same price as a new KLR you get all the things you mentioned.

    Only comparison is price for a used 950. Rest is day n night. Klr650 is a small hatchback to do grocery shopping compared to a purebred race car. I have a Honda XR650R Baja legend, a 950S with serious off road mods and upgrades, a 990R and a 1190R. I have ridden the KLR650, DR650, XR650L and loads of other. The 950 is still one of my favourites by far, great for long adventure tours, great in some hardcore off road trails and heaps of power and super reliable. There are loads of 950 and 990 enthusiast groups with advice on mods, accessories and rides. Many have more than one off road adventure bike, and most swear by their 950. Check online.

    That was the price. Great condition going from the klr650 is like going from a Honda to a Porsche. The handlebar location changes made a night and day difference. Very pleased with the bike so far. Able to travel off road and jump on the freeway without out any difficulties.

    Nice KDE. But how's the reliability on the KTM and maintenance schedule. I know nothing about the KTM. 👍👍

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 років тому +1

      KTM’s are definitely higher cost in terms of maintenance. As far as reliability you’ll hear varying reports. My personal experience with the 350 I owned previously and my current 1090 haven’t had any issues. It’s still early on the 1090 just over 6,000 miles. I don’t think KTM reliability is what people seem to make it on the Internet. Having said that though there are some little things that usually come up. On the 1090 the primary one is the fuel gauge hasn’t worked consistently since purchasing. There is an easy fix though and I think that’s the key with these bikes. Being comfortable to work on them and fix little things that come up. If you’re ok with that aspect then I think you’ll have a good ownership experience. Thanks for watching!

    Im Kind of torn.. for 6500 you can get decent 990's as well as f800gs's on the used market. I agree with you that I would never ever get a klr for that kind of price. But I'm not sure about KTM vs BMW

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  5 років тому

      That’s a tough call. Both are really good bikes. I think it would come down to how much off-road and how extreme the off-road riding will be. If it’s mostly off-road or extreme off-road that’s where the KTM will shine. If it’s going to be an even mix or not as extreme then the BMW might make more sense. Both are good bikes though and with the right rider either will make it through whatever you throw at it. Best of luck in your decision making.

      @@kdemotorsports I feel like the KTM is the more emotional bike. Looks and sounds better the the beamer as well
      The BMW probably is the more sensible option though. At the moment I lean more towards the 990, but it's a though decision

    Did you ever ride the KTM 690?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  6 років тому

      Nope another one I haven’t had the opportunity to ride yet. If the opportunity arises I will definitely give one a try. I would actually like the chance to ride the 690 side by side with the Husky 701 to see what if any differences there are between those two. However I doubt that opportunity will present itself.

    • @Modelpilot
      @Modelpilot 4 роки тому

      Yes i did, i rode with the 690 and 701 husq, they are completely different bikes compared with the 950/990, the 690 is more like a heavy offroad enduro bike
      And the 950 / 990 are real adventure bikes which have fantastic in off-road capabilities, if you never tried one....... try it 😋
