  • Hello lovelies! I'm SO excited to talk about Moncha--a sweater designed by Ailbiona McLochlainn with Shorn IV!! Let's talk farm-to-skein yarns, in the US and UK. Plus, I have Surf by Ankestrick on my needles and a use for all of that orange yarn you have in your stash . . . I hope you'll come over and hang out a while! ~Melissa

I'm so excited about the hint of Shorn V coming out! I've checked in a few times specifically wondering about it and I'm happy it'll be here soon. I happened to be wearing my Ziggy hat as I watched this one. Fantastic Shorn sweater!

I am knitting on a bright orange sweater with dark brown stranded colour work fossils while catching up with all my knitcast subscribions. It is nice to see you, and I love the sweaters you are making. (the idea that you need to wear an orange hat or else you might get shot, freaks me out a little bit...)

Looking at the thumbnails for the cast, we get all the way down to 138 before you're wearing something that isn't blue. I think it's your colour :-)
(I wear so much black even charcoal feels festive, so I'm with ya! What works, works.)
Thanks for another lovely vid. Can't wait to see Shorn 5 in all its glory.

The effect of those stripes on the Surf sweater are so beautiful, excited to see the finished product! I think the colors work really well. I’m curious whether you will work the sleeve from a provisional cast on as I believe you have mentioned doing in the past? I am working on a colorwork sweater with that method for the first time and I would be interested to see how you go about it. Happy knitting!

I just split for the sleeves and did a provisional cast on. It should work well as the next round is another MC round, so we'll see if it all works out!

I was intrigued by the one row jogless method you teased about, so I went ahead and bought the Surf pattern even though I don't have great interest in knitting it, especially as it's not size inclusive and I tend to avoid patterns that aren't. I have to admit I was disappointed to find it's no different than the yarn-forward method of alternating skeins every round that I've seen taught by multiple other designers and that I've been using in that context already. Not your fault, as you hadn't come across it before, but I don't think it was original to Ankestrick, so I wouldn't hesitate to discuss it in detail as if it was their invention.

Thanks for the info, Bekah! I searched everywhere for color change videos that offered the same technique . . . the only thing I found related to what you mention is a video by Elizabeth Smith Knits on a Yarn Forward technique for alternating skeins, which does, basically, execute the same technique--just without a color work (striped) example. This likely explains why it's relatively obscure if you search for single stripes without a jog. It's nice to see the technique in action, though I would still recommend using the extra needle to hold tension in the row below :)

I don’t see anything about an extra needle in the instructions in the Surf pattern? I wonder if she published more than one version.

SDIVA has a UA-cam tutorial on it and the SkeinYarn website has it as well. I can’t remember where I came across it first - I don’t think it was called yarn forward where I first saw it - but I have definitely run into it other places and in just talking to other knitters.

Where can you get the book for the surf sweater pattern?

It's available on Rav as an e-book, I think. Link in the description should get you close.
