Awesome build and video. Thank you for talking us through it. I just got the same kit (my first model), so will be following your video for a shopping list and actual building!
Great build man, looks real sweet,my favourite movie of alltime is 'The right stuff' from 1983, really love this part of history, thinking of buying this kit, keep up the great work, cheers
I'm a Space Baby and Space Nut. I've watched The Right Stuff about a million times! Keep you eyes peeled - I'll be releasing soon. great vid4eo on a resin Astronaut!
@@pauly7218 Cheers,me too,my favourite alltime movie, love the humour & irony in it also, the book is completely different to the movie,I see that horizon models is an Aussie company as well, which is rare for the way country is heaaded these days it seems?,I am going to but the mercury/redstone & mercury/atlas kits this week me thinks, cheers
Hi Pauly7218. That was fun to watch. Your attention to detail is spot on. I'll be using many of the techniques you used on my builds. I'm sitting on a Saturn V and a first landing on the Moon kit. I would love to also get the Mercury Redstone and the Mercury Atlas Friendship 7(John Glen's Flight) kit.
I actually do have it, and it is in the works - It will have to wait until I finish the soon the be started American LaFrance Fire Engine. My massive, lighted Jupiter 2 build will be out very, very soon!
Great build Paul. I just picked up one of these kits and hope to begin building it soon. Your video will be an excellent resource for me. Quick question: I live down in your neck of the woods (Henderson) and am wondering where you picked up that bottle of Pledge Floor Care? I’ve searched all the major stores with no luck. Thanks again!
I am recently retired and just getting into plastic model building. Do you use solvent based paint or water based acrylics for your painting? Watching you paint has convinced me to buy an air brush. I experimented with gluing and painting techniques on my first attempt with Revell's Model of the Eagle Lunar Lander, with only modest success. There seems to be a lot of debate as to which is best. Excited to try your gluing technique with the Tamiya Thin cement. I really enjoyed your video and am very impressed with your modeling skills. I hope my Mercury Redstone turns out half as nice as yours. Thanks Paul
Very nicely done. I am about to start my first model in years and years -- the Horizon Atlas D (which my father "the Colonel" actually launched repeatedly along with Titans and Minuteman). One question -- why put the glue on the seams -- wicking or not -- instead of on the inside edges where the glue would maybe be less obvious? Your video has given me some much needed courage to get started - Thanks! I'll stay tuned for the Atlas one!
Trust me on the glue thing. This is far and away the best way to glue up these models. Certainly, apply it to the seam in unseen areas or the back sides, but even applying it on the face of it, there is hardly any impact. You'll be good with this, I promise!
Great build Paul, I'm about to do the same build. Can you tell me if you just painted over the photo etched parts, particularly the port holes? How did that come out.
It would be unfair for me to say, as I'm a slow builder - like turtle. In the end, it's not a difficult kit and you can knock it out in a few days depending on how you spend time with it.
Hi Paul, I am building one at the moment. Good post and nice job! I am pretty sure, correct me if I am wrong. This is the first ever model kit made in Australia? Kind of fitting really, because the Aussie's supported the Mercury program with the Muchea Tracking Station (as depicted in the movie Right Stuff). We love our American brothers! Also what Saturn V did you build? Next Horizon 1/72 Atlas maybe? Pete (Down Under).
HI PAUL, LOVELY MODEL BUILD GREAT PAINT JOB ETC. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF USING MICRO SOL AND MICRO SET FOR LAYING DOWN DECALS. A DAMP COTTON BUD FOR REMOVING THAT TYPE OF FILLER IS EASIER AND NEATER, ALSO ON OTHER FILLER TYPES MODELERS HAVE USED ACETONE TO REMOVE EXCESS FILLER BEFORE SANDING AS THIS STOPS DETAILS AND FINE DETAILS ALSO FROM GETTING REMOVED ETC AND HAVING TO BE PUT BACK.
I actually routinely turn to microsol and microset, but for decals over heavy detail or very thick decals I turn to harder setting agents. Great filler tips too!
The escape tower was the most difficult part of the kit... and no video of you actually building it... I would have liked to see how you managed it; I’m still trying to get it right on my model......
I have a lung disease from my 38 years of Firefighting Service. I am aware of it in the videos and try to edit it out, but sadly I can't get it all. I hope you still enjoy the videos....
I am currently working on this model. So far it is pretty straight forward except for the launch escape tower, which to me, seems to be a bad design. The ring DOES NOT fit over the parachute capsule with out a lot of sanding and Hoizons made three seprate pieces for the trusses (that incidently do not fit into the holes of the ring) which are very difficult to line up. I have searched online to see finished models and nearly all have messed up looking LETs. Paul, I watched your video in the hopes that you would show how you completed the LET build... you did not do so...emitting the more difficult aspect of this build. This was dissappionting
I'm Sorry I missed detailing the part you are most interested in, but yes, the tower was a ton of fun. LOL.... I too did some mods to the base as the fit wasn't there. FYI, I have other space kits in store, and will try to detail the tower better. Good luck with the build. I'd love to see it when you finish!
@@pauly7218 Ya- I'll send picks when it's done. I am pretty new at this model stuff and am looking for all the advise I can get. (I'm also struggling with seam lines on the booster) Do you remember if you built the tower first and then painted or painted the parts first then put it together and glued? Do you plan to do the Horizons Mercury Atlas rocket?
@@joemiriani691 Seam lines on these are a pain, but a part of the hobby. I built the entire tower and painted after, kind of smooths things out. I do have the mercury kit and can't wait to build it, but for the channels sake, I have to space (get it?) out my space builds to hit a variety of styles....
Liked it very much! More please!
I loved this video, and it’s going to help me build my 1/72 scale Mercury Redstone Model. Thanks Paul, you’re the man!!!
great job, just bought one last week.

It's a fun kit....
Pauly7218 May I ask - did your capsule fit straight onto the rocket body? Mine seems to a be a little too wide and doesn’t sit straight!
Realy liked the vid Paul thank you, please do more rocket, space stuff👍
I have more in the works...
An Air Force man. Thanks for Serving. My Dad served during the Korean Conflict.
Proudly served for six years. My salute to your Father and thanks to you for the kind words and for watching...
Awesome love space builds
Totally my favorite. I'm doing my live stream Sunday morning 9am PST, and will be talking about something I think you will find interesting....
Great build video, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it

I built the massive Dragon Saturn V! Stands almost 6' tall! Such a fun build!
Great job Paul!
Always looking forward to the next vide.
When is your next ring video gonna come out?

The good news is I have more space vehicles and will pay the towers more attention!
how many days did it take to do that rocket?
I'm a super slow model builder. I could have done it in like a week, but my build took more like2/3 weeks....
