  • Showdown! Tamiya TT-02 Type-S versus Tamiya XV-01 rally car race! Can the cheaper TT-02 Type-S beat the more expensive Tamiya XV-01 rally car? Lancia Delta Integrale vs BMW Z3! After adapting the standard TT-02 Type-S suspension (at no cost) to give better ground clearance, it seems to be very capable off-road. But the XV-01 is a dedicated off-roader, how close will the action be? We put them to the test on a short off-road rally course - who will win?
    Both cars are standard and stock, the TT-02 Type-S has the advantage of a stock torque tuned motor, but will that be enough?
    Many thanks to my good friend Rob, of Rob Brennan RC, for filming this video and being a fantastic friend!

    I'm really enjoying these videos and your passion. I told the head of engineering at the schoo l where I work that I'd got a Tamiya r c. He was smiling when he said, Yeah, I really want one, too. And, still smiling, he said, You're just a big kid aren't you?! Yeah, I said, and proud of it! Anyway, great work fellas. I know I'm gonna enjoy this hobby. Though WHY am I eyeing up other chassis like the M range for a Beetle when I'm building an Audi Q and I've got a Rising Fighter on standby????

    • @leewprice
      @leewprice 3 роки тому +1

      Ha. Yes I've got the bug! Can I ask a quick question, please?
      Now that I have two controllers (a Carson stick and an Etronix wheel), chargers and some batteries, when I buy my next Tamiya will I just need an ESC, a servo and a receiver and then I can use my two controllers to bind to the receiver? And if so, do I need to get specific receivers, or are there universal ones? New to all this!

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  3 роки тому

      @@leewprice I don't think it's easy to get the separate receivers for these radios. What I do is fix the receiver into the car with velcro, and just swap the receiver between cars! Saves a load of money and only takes a minute to do the swap! So you only need a servo and ESC for the next car!!!

    Watching the racing - or, at least, the timed runs - was great fun. The TT-02´s design, or rather its basic configuration, is fairly straightforward and well proven by various manufacturers, while the XV-01 looks wacky, to me, like a stretched M-03 with a belt driven rear diff. This makes the XV´s design look funky and high-tech to me, so I´ve been slightly surprised each time the TT-02´s won a challenge, especially as the XV-01 costs quite a bit more.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 років тому +2

      Hi Del! Hope you are well my friend! Well, the XV is a wacky design for sure, but it kinda makes sense when you build it! The TT type-S is more straight forward, but the suspension setup is a million miles better than the stock TT. And with the little boost that the Torque tuned motor gives it, it certainly felt faster than the XV, and the stopwatch proved that to be correct! I think the XV really needs a better motor, then it would be victorious! Thanks for the interesting comment, as always, wishing you and yours a lovely weekend, mate! :))

      Thanks Jay! No I think the motor may be the difference, the XV01 has a Johnson silver can (stock) and the TT02s has a Torque Tuned (stock). The suspension on both chassis is very similar hence so is the handling although the XV01 turns in better due to the weight of the front motor. I still prefer the driving experience of the XV01 but the TT02s is awesome value for money! 😎👍

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  4 роки тому +1

      Cheers! TBH I think both are cracking rally car chassis. I also tweaked the XV suspension, putting longer shock bottom links on and stiffer oil. I think it works as well as the TT, but has a little less ground clearance, after the mods to both cars. Thing is, the XV has the motor in front of the front wheels, this weight distribution makes it prone to oversteer. The TT is more neutral with the motor in the middle. So a slightly different driving style needed for each car. Both awesome, but the TT is still cheaper! :)

      Many thanks Alan! Yeah, sure do need to cut that grass - the park keeper is getting very lazy! Well, it was a fun little test, even though not too scientific!
      I did tot-up the rough prices of the hop-ups included in the Type-S kit over the stock TT02. It added up to quite a big difference, well over £80 if I remember, not including the suspension arms! (CVA shocks, Torque tuned motor, full ball bearings, high torque servo saver, Carbon fibre shock towers, full turnbuckle set - the list goes on!)
      So I think it would be most cost effective to just buy the kit!

      Cheers Mark. I already have bearings, shocks and motor so I’m part of the way there 😬. I’ll have to do a cost/benefit on the rest. I don’t even know what a high torque servo saver is all about! I’ve got the torque-tuned motor and the Tamiya brushless so I have options there. I’ve seen loads of other hop-ups like the speed gears, motor mount, , ball difs and one-way front dif too. If you fully loaded it, you’d spend as much as a real Lancia Delta!

      Sounds like you have a well sorted TT02 there, Alan! You have the most important bits! If I were you, I wouldn't even look at the ball diffs or one way diff, too expensive for little return in performance! You are right, you can spend silly money on these little kits - I also concentrate on value for money and the best performance increase per pound! Great vid (you don't make not great ones, do you :) ). I'm about to buy a Subaru MC99 or Lancia Delta kit and was wondering what chassis to choose. After all I'm still new to Tamiya and definitely new to rally. Having watched your video I'm going for TT-02, not just because it beat XV-01 ;) but also because it's so much cheaper, wonder why if the difference isn't that huge really. Thanks again. Oh, and I believed that the front mounted motor would make more of a difference while taking corners? Although it doesn't seem so...

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there and thanks for the great comment! Yes, the XV01 is expensive. But this is not the standard TT02! This is the TT02 Type-S, it costs about 130 pounds UK, as opposed to about 110 pounds for the stock TT02, but it does not come with a body. It is so much better than the stock TT02, I will leave a link to my unboxing of the Type-S so you can see the differences. Sorry if you already know all of this!
      ua-cam.com/video/j6ILQAGym2A/v-deo.html
      I also have a build series of the Type-S where I show how to do the simple mods to increase ground clearance for rallying! Cheers! :)

      @@MarkBryanRC Oh, I only noticed it wasn't a regular TT-02 just now! Thanks for the response, any advice much appreciated! As I said, I'm still learning about Tamiya but I guess I'm gonna stick with it for years to come. I love building, upgrading and that there are so many spare and custom parts available. Painting perhaps not my thing yet ;) Another skill to master then ;)
      EDIT: Yeah, being a beginner and all, I'm going for TT-02. Checked the prices and in my country it's 145 pounds for TT-02S without body and motor, 110 pounds for TT-02 with motor and Lancia Delta body and 190 pounds for XV-01 with Lancia body&motor. Step by step, I think. I'll change the bearings, diff gears and maybe add some alu parts and be good for some time.

      Hello again, great to read you! No worries, I think you are making a good choice, the TT02 is a good basic platform, and as you say, there are many ways to upgrade and hop-up. The best thing is you can do it in stages and a bit at a time.
      Yes, you've chosen some good upgrades to begin with. I have another video about cheap/no-cost basic upgrades for the TT02 for rally running, take a look if you are interested and good luck with the new RC!

    Hello Sir. this is just what I am looking for. Very good video. I am in the market for buying a rally rc 1/10 car. I have found the TT02R chassis kit and the XV01 Lancia Delta. Is the S model you have , the same as the R version ?. The R version comes with a lot of upgrades. To me is looks like the XV01 is more stable than the TT02 S. but maybe the motor is better on the TT02 S?

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  3 роки тому +1

      Hello, Michael! The TT02R is more difficult to turn into a rally car. It is very different to the TT02S, which can easily be turned into a rally monster, due to the better suspension arms (in my opinion). The XV01 is superb out of the box, but costs a lot more money. If money is no object, the XV01 is the way to go! All the best from Mark... :))

      Hi Gary! No worries mate! The XV01 comes with all the hop ups you need - including metal bearings and oil filled shocks. If you go for the TT02 basic kit, you need to order the metal ball bearings and Mini oil filled shocks as a minimum for a good runner. However, I recommend the TT02 Type-S, which has tons of hop-ups included, bearings, oil shocks, carbon shock towers, upgraded suspension arms and much more! Check out my TT02 Type-S unboxing and you will see what I mean! A standard servo will fit either chassis just fine. Good luck and happy RCing! :))

    Hello mate. I enjoyed that. The TT-02 does look quicker on the video. Hiya Pete! Yeah, this was just a bit of fun really, we ran the Type-S last time we did a comparison at the track with the XV and Robs TT02 Lancia, it was much faster on a lap than both the Lancias! This time the XV was much closer but only on one of the runs, I think I got lucky! For some reason the Type-S seems to have a lot more punch out of the corners, maybe I got one of the better Torque Tuned motors, they all differ a little bit in performance due to the manufacturing tolerances.
      Hehe - I thought the stickers on the BMW were funny back in the 90's - it was an old motorcycling joke from one of the popular magazines back then, and they gave away free sticker sheets with "porking" as the theme - basically a pig on a bike! I should probably swap them for the TYPE-S stickers that came with the kit!

      Hi - and thanks for the interesting comments, you have a good point about the motors! As I said in the video and description, we wanted to do a stock test. They were both using Turnigy 3000mAh batteries and have the stock TBLE02 ESC's. We tested the top speed and they are almost identical (on tarmac, anyway!) But I agree the Johnson motor in the XV is a little weak, and the Torque Tuned in the TT feels particularly good, one of the better one's I've tried, certainly feels "punchier" than most! So yeah, an advantage, but that's how they came. Time for an upgraded motor in the XV and a rematch, I think! All the best - cheers! :)

    @theibault 5 років тому +1

    Lol, that was fun to watch. I will say though, as someone who owns both cars, the XV-01 is miles better. Could you please tell me the FDR of both that you were running? I don't think this was really apples to apples so to say. ;)

      Many thanks for the comment, Omar! I hope you are well. I must say I love them both, but try as I did (about 4 more runs off camera each), the Type-S was faster in stock form. The standard road gearing and Torque Tuned motor makes a big difference, I think. So have you tried increasing the Type-S suspension travel and running it on the rough too?
      Sorry my friend, you need to tell me what FDR means before I can answer your question! :)

    • @theibault
      @theibault 5 років тому +1

      @@MarkBryanRC I am well Mark! FDR is final drive ratio: FDR = spur/pinion x internal ratio. You'd need the two cars to be close in FDR, otherwise it's not fair to judge them against each other. ;) If they are too far apart, it would be akin to judging a race car vs a grocery getter.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  5 років тому +1

      Ahh - I see said the blind man (me - LOL!!!) Not sure about the ratios, but they are close on top speed when tested on the road, the XV hit 17mph and the Type-S hit 18 mph in stock form. They are still in the same stock form, so pretty close in outright performance, but the stock Torque tuned in the Type-S giving a little extra oomph! So not as different as it may seem! I agree with you that the XV is a better chassis - I just need to swap out that standard silver can and put something it deserves in it's place! :)
