If you think about it, certainly, the Celine collections of 2018/19/20 were about going out in the city, with a very Parisian 80s bourgeois aesthetic to them, whereas in these new collections, clearly targeted towards the youth, you could see the different approach to clothe oneself after a pandemic. So, these clothes are more representative, in a way, of staying indoors, throwing a vintage jacket stolen from your mom on top of a sweatsuit and a Y2K bag bought on Depop. To draw a comparison with the other collections, there were clothes to go to restaurant, maybe university or a concert. Everything became more chill as a result of everything. And maybe now, a fantastic pair of cognac over the knee 10 cms heeled boots is not as relevant as a pair of rain boots that you put on to grab a coffee or see your friends in the park. Whereas, the others designers still romanticize a life post-pandemic where the things are coming to normal, the normal that we used to know, Hedi embraces this period with a mix of products targeted to a very wide audience. And in that sense, I think it's genius to imagine how he makes people indulge in fashion even in a state of emergency, making the everyday a desirable object that one would love to possess.

I think it's not about it being youth inspired, it's more about the contrast that hedi Slimane used to bring with his collections. A lot of the items we are seeing are really similar to what can be found at h&m and american eagle, which til tokers use. There is nothing wrong with that, it's just the lack of contrast which was always evident with his collections. I think that was the essence of hedi.

My issue with Slemaine was that starting out the gate is that each brand has a "woman." For the women who had purchased the brand, myself included, it was upsetting that he decided to chop the brand's psychology. Men designers (tend) see women as lucky to be bestowed their clothes; women designers (tend) to see that paradigm the other way around. I wasn't upset about Selmaine coming to bring life into the brand, all brands need resets, but with his first show, he was out of control, cavalier. [Even] Lagerfeld was respectful of his predecessors. And Gucci needed a total reboot or suffer death, and GOD BLESS ALESSANDRO. Celine wasn't dying. Pheobe was in tune with women; she hit in a certain way. However, all and all, Slemaine subsequent shows have been rather impressive, and I'm on board-minus that first one. No, I want my money back (side-eye)

I always found PP Celina overrated. There were some good collections however the shoes were always ugly . HS coming to the brand was exciting but he’s never really delivered . Hedi hasn’t adapted. Since he was alway Demna and Allesansro appeared and this changed the landscape. He has his style but hasn’t evolved as a creative. Saying that the last menswear collection shot on the roof of that castle was pretty good. Loved the casting . You want to do diversity, that’s how you do it . Music was a bit off putting but I was impressed

I think the reality is a lot of women felt like Phoebe's Celine was speaking to a modern (empowered) woman and frankly Hedi's woman looks have been impractical cocktail dresses - not exactly the modern powerful woman. But ur right, Phoebe doesn't own the brand, she was there for like a decade, I'm sure she creatively wanted to move on.

I think the issue with the punk comparison is that the current youth culture has been completely commodified by TikTok, and also relies too heavily on referencing actually-rebellious youth cultures, without being anywhere near them in attitude. They're not really going against the system, they're playing right into it

Hedi Slimane is just doing his thing, one of the main themes in his work is youth and its representation. You can see it in both his photography and his fashion designs. He's still very much exploring the theme of youth, it just happens that youth and tik tok are currently associated nowadays and these collections are the logical consequences of it.

I found this quite a strange move since many of those who find tik tok cringy will be alienated by this direction and though appealing to young people is an important move for brands to remain relevant , a vast majority of young tik tok fans will not be able to afford Celine so they surely aren’t a great demographic to target

They out here looking like the army with how similar they look😂😂.

I disagree with your assessment of Celine's various designers - all of them, beginning with Celine herself, the founder, were chic, feminine, classic, rather minimalist, for middle aged women. All the designers that followed, including Michal Kors and Phoebe Philo were variations of that original aesthetic. Only Hedi has completely broken away and made rock n roll, grunge, skin tight, teenage look which is the only designer in Celine's history who completely rejected the original look. That's the outrage. I personally HATE what Heidi did, but in the end, I'm fine, its just clothes I can't afford, but I just like to look at fashion and now I just ignore Hedi Slimane's Celine.

I must be psychic cause I swear you came to my mind around the time you posted this. Anyway, the collection really throws me off. The most heavily inspired looks have such close resemblance to what we've actually seen from tiktokers that I just don't see the point. I wish there was more interpretation and less wannabe-cool dad energy. Even the title I find regrettable. It should be called "That's what the kids wear, right?"

If we forget about the whole tiktok thing for a moment, I think Hedi is just trying to sell "basic" stuffs like jeans, sweater, cardigan, tie dye tshirt, and some sneakers which are good for times like this where the market just need those basics, not really the chelsea boots, flared trousers, and leather jacket

I actually enjoyed his latest collection “Teen Knigh Poem. Being a fashion enthusiast, I love the fact that he is around because you sort of anticipate what he is doing but personally ( like the million fans of Phoebe) It is not my style and it was a let down that the notion of the old celine has dissolved in thin air. However, we see this kids ( and non kids ) on tiktok and it is quite entertaining plus the hype is real! i reckon everyone’s gona be a multimedia expert in the near future haha.
Hedi is clever and he knows it. He is riding the waves and the waves are loving him so far.

I would not call the tik tok trends and stuff related a cultural thing. As far as I know and feel it is more like an advertisement platform flexing than a common cultural ground meeting and interact. I think it's just to mainstream and money driven for a "real" culture. I do also think hedi is too late on the fashion aspect as well as not targeting the audience well because the demographic group may be between 12-18? (As another commentator also stated). But maybe I'm a little bit biased, I just hate tik tok and don't really like the celine/hedi stuff.

I think it's just weird and not...smart? There are ways designers can remain relevant by reimagining or "upgrading" their own fashion house staples without just recreating existing "anticulture" pieces such as he has. Subversion from the "norm"is not always the best direction. It's not "casual lux", it's just casual and unoriginal and even worse, commercially misdirected for someone whose major design aspiration is to make commercially viable clothes not just being "artsy". Most tik tok users even mildly interested in fashion, maybe even Celine, can't afford any of these and a Celine customer who's not a tik tok fan just won't understand where this collection is coming from and going. It's not innovative at all, the styling is coherent for the aesthetic, but for a brand like Celine??? The collection is lazy. Juts because it's subversive, doesn't mean it's great.

However, whether ya'll like it or not, CELINE's sales are doing pretty good though. Not to mention the brand's first global ambassador has a massive impact to the brand's reputation and recognition. We can't just say that it's bad because every business is meant to earn profits as well and not just mainly to satisfy the audience. The world is moving and so should everyone be. Staying in one's lane for too long wont be helpful in the long run.

I think Hedi's strongest suit is not his consistency in reviving the same aesthetic and his code of dressing. It's his marketing strategy and how he uses his connections with celebrities and influential figures. Take his campaign with Lisa from Bpink for instance. This will attract and garner more worldwide attention to Celine as opposed to Phoebe's era where the strategy was much less and more minimal.

It's actually really funny because scene fashion and Y2K fashion is coming back and i've seen it a lot on tiktok actually, tons of gen Z creators are taking inspiration from early 2000s and the scenecore kids and I can see it reaching the mainstream soon, I have yet to see a creator speak on this topic though even though inspo pages focused to the aesthetic on instagram are reaching up to 100k in the followers department quickly. The only brand i've seen pick up on this is Blumarine in their fall 21 (Collection based on 2000s Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Low waisted jeans, etc. Pieces of that collection are already being thrown on famous people by their stylists futher pushing the trend.) It's really cool how everything comes around, People picked up the 80s aesthetics back, then 90s and now Gen Z is bringing back the 2000s aesthetics to the spotlight. I wonder if in the future kids will be dressing like 2015-2016 hypebeasts lol.

@@simp6068 i agree 100% but i wasn't referring to early 2000s/ y2k which of course has made a comeback. I was comparing the eboy style to scene fashion as they are both linked to the big social media platforms of the time (myspace and tiktok) the same with early 10s tumblr style. I think the thing that makes y2k unique is that there was a huge range of expression, not so much a specific way of doing the style

Celine Homme found it's mojo with Hedi from SS21 onwards. It felt like this was the first Hedi-Celine show (I actually didn't so much like the previous shows). The AW21 that followed was also fire. It's very good designing, and a lot of very wearable pieces, if people can't breakdown the looks and see that then they don't know how to read a runway. Runways always look OTT. Hedi (I'm no fan boy, and mostly hated SLP - HATE those noughties bands) has been flexible and adaptable here. Covid threw everything a curveball and he's actually landed this perfectly. He's innovated and produced something like he never has before. It's not the same old as everyone keeps saying. Anyone saying that is parroting someone else who said it a decade ago.

I think something else that should be discussed is Hedi looking at modern androgyny and applying that to Celine Homme. Tik Tok is really like the new era of Tumblr for Gen Z, and a lot of what they talk about on there is similar to that of Tumblr did back in the Early 2010s which could also apply to his SLP days. He really makes designer to appeal to the younger audience of that time. If it doesn’t work for me, it’ll work for someone 5-10 years younger than me.
