My first concert June 1978. Foreigner with opening act Head East, so they were truly the first rock band I saw. I still play in cover bands and we just recently brought on an amazing keyboardist. I’ve already told him ... dude, get busy learning Never Been Any Reason. I never get tired of that song, and I think the crowds will go nuts over it. 🤘
I live 30 minutes from Champaign. When I was a kid growing up in a tiny farm town, there was nothing to do but grow weed and listen to music. Head East was so hot at the time, we had heard about them. Not from the radio, but word of mouth. Sadly, I never got to go see them as we were all around 15, but we damn sure wanted to.
I have lived in the Mt Vernon IL area all my 61 years, in 1978 I worked at a pool hall in Kell,on route 37and 161 called the straight shooter, we had outside concert's every Saturday night, Head East played there at least once maybe twice, they rocked then and still do.
i started listening to Head East when i was a freshman in high school. i have never stopped . EXCELLENT keyboard work.i have persuded the keyboard because of my mentors. play on my brothers
Steve went to the Woodlawn, Il High School which is the town I live in. Brad Flota played guitar for then in 1972 and is from my hometown Mt. Vernon, Il. I heard them many times "back in the day". And have heard them twice in the last couple of years. These towns are both in Jefferson County ergo Jefftown Creek which is a creek by a little town named Cravat. RIP Brad Flota - Vietnam Vet.
You know the backroads if you've been to Cravat. LOL. Played some JH basketball a few times at Grand Prairie School and did my student teaching at Casey JH.
flat as a pancake was their best album. i still have a 1 pristine vinyl record and 1 play to make copies of. at one time to tape, now to cd. i know and play every song off that lp. deffinatelly one of my favorite lp's and bands of the 70's. id love to see them live!
I saw them in a small auditorium on one of the bridges in Cedar Rapids. They were the loudest band I ever heard live. Oh, and I remember orange sunshine very well.
I saw Head East when they very first started getting popular ( or at least when "there's never been any reason came out") at Peabody's in Coeur d' Alene Idaho. Those were the best times of my LIFE. My gosh, where has the time gone?
I was there on the "Quad" in those days. Lots of "orange" around back then. I still remember watching you guys set up & the equipment van from some mattress place ?
Steve opened a studio in Indianola Iowa he was known to have a few libations on Ingersoll Ave in Des Moines I hung out with Mike "TINY"Rogers who worked with him during the JJ Steele days and kurt bass player miss all you guys
The Indianola studio, South River Studios, was owned by Michael Jury Lawyer. Hardboys fans will know it. Steve brought bands in and acted as producer. Later Mike moved the studio to Des Moines and added video production as well. This was the studio that Slipknot recorded their first 2 records. If I remember the story correctly. Mike passed away in 2003 at 42. Great guy, drummer and artist.
From 3:33 on Bill Grady seems a little starstruck after Huston sets him straight that Orange sunshine not juice, was the culprit behind "Baxter Twilight's" magic vision. It's Steves story after all Bill... "Great to have us here"?? Projecting much Bill, Freudian slip? Well, it IS great to have Steve from the original Head East anywhere indeed! A fan since 1969...
I believe it was The Time-ations. Roger Boyd on keyboards and his brother Larry on bass started out in Carlyle, IL in the late 60s and the band morphed and improved. I was in an art class with Steve Huston @ Kaskaskia College before he moved to Champaign (U of Illinois)
Actually the original band name was; "Head Yeast", but venues and audience members thought they were hearing "East" instead of "Yeast", so the band "Gave In", dropped out the "Y", and the rest is RnR History!
Head East is hardly the most unusual name these days. Goo Goo Dolls, Travis, April Wine, Heart, The Who, Slipknot, Godsmack, Alice In Chains, etc, etc, etc...
ultrakool they were according to Wikipedia, a couple of them went to the university of Illinois, and another one went to Eastern Illinois I'm not sure where the Iowa part comes in
Iowa rock and roll hall of fame.....that's funny. At least WI can say we gave the world Les Paul and the electric guitar. Iowa gave the world the death place of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
Oh Head East... I've missed you Since You've Been Gone!
I remember the first time.... down at Jefftown Creek.
Man that head east concert and foreigner concert brings such fond memories to my heart
Saw Head East, Foreigner, April Wine, 1 other band that was great. Then The Outlaws at the 76 Iowa Jam Mem Day Weekend 🎤🎸🤘🔥🔥💯

I don’t think I would have shared that story. But love their music. Their drummer was way underrated!
Steve Huston what a great drummer,he could really lay it down.

I saw Head East in Nov '79 in Springfield, MO. One of the very best concerts I've ever been to.
Head East has some of the bestttt music
I have lived in the Mt Vernon IL area all my 61 years, in 1978 I worked at a pool hall in Kell,on route 37and 161 called the straight shooter, we had outside concert's every Saturday night, Head East played there at least once maybe twice, they rocked then and still do.
Saw Head East in Stevens Point, WI in either 1979 or 80. Best time ever! Flat as a Pancake is an awesome album.
they still rock
I'm not from the midwest but they are one of my favorite bands. Thanks
i started listening to Head East when i was a freshman in high school. i have never stopped . EXCELLENT keyboard work.i have persuded the keyboard because of my mentors. play on my brothers

Agreed. Flat As A Pancake definitely their best LP.
I have Flat As A Pancake on Pyramid Records. Before they signed with A & M.
What was the bands name before it became Head East?
Why does the radio station only play "never been any reason". Love me tonight, fly by night lady, city of gold all great songs also
@@homespuncovers89Go West Young Man😊
I saw them in a small auditorium on one of the bridges in Cedar Rapids. They were the loudest band I ever heard live. Oh, and I remember orange sunshine very well.
They are from Illinois. John is from Mt. Pulaski. Met him at a bar in Springfield in about 1979 post head east. Nice dude.
RIP Steve.
Where's Baxter now?? lol. Wouldn't finding him be a HOOT. I'D like to shake his hand. The name was Genius!!
Glad to know this because i really did often wonder why they would call themselves such a name...thanks for getting that question out of my head ! !
I saw Head East when they very first started getting popular ( or at least when "there's never been any reason came out") at Peabody's in Coeur d' Alene Idaho. Those were the best times of my LIFE. My gosh, where has the time gone?
My girlfriend and I met in Las Vegas, we were both from Maryland, therefore she and I loved the band Head East.
I was there on the "Quad" in those days.
Lots of "orange" around back then. I still remember watching you guys
set up & the equipment van from some mattress place ?
You rock dude, hell yea rock and roll forever
As an original Easterner, and my maternal Grandfather's name was Todd Forrest Hewitt, that was hysterical.
That's awesome. I remember Orange Sunshine well.
John Schlitt rules!
I remember them starting out as "The Timeations" in 1969.
Head East played my high school dance in 69 or 70….at that time I thought they were good but had no idea they would become classic rockers!
Great band !!! 👍
Saw then in 1974 in Genoa, Ill
Steve opened a studio in Indianola Iowa he was known to have a few libations on Ingersoll Ave in Des Moines I hung out with Mike "TINY"Rogers who worked with him during the JJ Steele days and kurt bass player miss all you guys
The Alpine Lounge Des Moines

That’s cool!! I’d wondered how they came up with that name.
Steve, just one thing...give me more cowbell. Thanks!
Great story! I wonder how Baxster is today???
Steve seems like a pretty good ol boy
I thought the guys were from STL. The diner on the Flat As A Pancake album is on Olive Blvd. I'd swear a few still live in STL. Anybody??
From 3:33 on Bill Grady seems a little starstruck after Huston sets him straight that Orange sunshine not juice, was the culprit behind "Baxter Twilight's" magic vision. Rich Creador was my son guitar teacher.
I always wondered about that. Now I know, but I'm going to wonder what became of Baxter.
I would’ve just answered “never been any reason” to that question.
Thank God for orange sunshine
"Orange Barrel"! That was the name of the dose back in the baby seventies.
What was the original band name?
I believe it was The Time-ations. Roger Boyd on keyboards and his brother Larry on bass started out in Carlyle, IL in the late 60s and the band morphed and improved. I was in an art class with Steve Huston @ Kaskaskia College before he moved to Champaign (U of Illinois)

Actually it was" Bread Yeast" but everybody thought they heard Head East
So what became of Baxter Forest Twilight? Did the FBI ever catch up with him?
I had NO IDEA that there even was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Iowa. Does that mean its just a matter of time before Slipknot gets inducted??
🤣
The meaning of Head East is... Head Source.
I'm tripping man
lol that's cool
Head East is hardly the most unusual name these days. Goo Goo Dolls, Travis, April Wine, Heart, The Who, Slipknot, Godsmack, Alice In Chains, etc, etc, etc...
The Who? predates Head East by a decade (been around since the mid 60s)
thought they were from illinois
ultrakool they were according to Wikipedia, a couple of them went to the university of Illinois, and another one went to Eastern Illinois I'm not sure where the Iowa part comes in
"30 or 40 clubs"!! ok, even if a generous recollection ..what is there now, or even 30 years ago in "C-U"..3 or 4 places?
There's never been any reason.... to do so much LSD. 😃
Not the same without John. They look lost
Ah,and they say drugs will ruin you. Ha ha ha. Don't know what happened to the acid head, but the music is good classic rock.
I saw a dog turn into a crocodile.
More sun worship. ha!
The best stories are all coming from boomers.
I guess this would be a headline in Iowa. Therefore, I'll not comment.
Head East Flat as a Pancake
Orange barrels lol😅
I guess Head East didn't have a dental plan.
Iowa rock and roll hall of fame.....that's funny. At least WI can say we gave the world Les Paul and the electric guitar. Iowa gave the world the death place of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
richarris1111 Radar O'Riley is in it...
And Rocky Marciano
Donna Reed, Tommy Bolin, John Wayne, The Field of Dreams, Buffalo Bill Cody, Andy Williams and me!
Horrible name for a band , if they would of came up with a cool name they would of sold more records.
