My grandfather at the end of his journey sat straight up out of his death bed and opened his eyes for the first time in days near the end of his hospice when we played this song for him. Now we play it at every family ash spreading and burial.
On this day in 1970 {May 2nd} Turley Richards performed "I Heard The Voice of Jesus" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... Seven weeks later the song entered the Billboard's Top 100 at #100, the following week it was at #103, and then for it's final two weeks on the Top 100 is was at position #99... Four weeks earlier the song entered Billboard's Top 100 chart at position #85, the following week it was at #86, and then on it's third and last week on the Top 100 it peaked at #84... And on the same 'Bandstand' episode he also performed "Love Minus Zero - No Limits", four weeks earlier it entered the Top 100 chart at position #85, the following week it was at #86, and then on it's third and last week on the Top 100 it peaked at #84... He had one other Top 100 record, "You Might Need Somebody", it reached #54 {for 2 weeks} on February 17th, 1980... Turley Richards, Richard Turley, will celebrate his 79th birthday next month on June 12th, 2020...
I was converted to Christianity in early 1970 from being a hippie with no direction, to the Jesus Movement, and this song really blew my mind when I first heard it that year. One of my favorites! The Cry of the Soul! What a voice
Me too ... July, 1971, San Bernadino, CA, at Summer camp, Air National Guard. Greatest moment in my life. Two weeks later, my wife came to the Lord too ...
Explain to me how a man with a voice like this is not more widely known? How can it be? He could out sing just about anyone recording through the decades he's recorded up to and including today. His octave range is staggering. It sounds like three different vocalists on this one song and it's all Turley. He's got soul, blues, gospel, rock all wrapped up tight in one vocal. Listen to those last vocal notes at the end of this song -- I dare any singer to share the stage with this guy. He could shake up Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey with his power. I love it.
True :-) he's new to me, really enjoyed this. The vocal range reminded me of Tim Buckley at times, but more 'soul, blues, gospel, rock' in there as you say.
Sometimes you need someone who can manage you and help others discover you. The music industry is not easy for anyone. You have to work at being discovered.
@@judithgrominger4253 - You are right Judith but Turley was on Warner Brothers Records -- the part about being discovered he was passed. I think he simply wasn't handled correctly because a major label has major money for promotion. If the spiritual music doesn't move (you have to sell records) he needed to crossover to more commercial songs. He didn't. Tim Buckley also had a soaring voice but he diversified his songs. Turley could have been in that same realm as Tim. Or, Turley just didn't want it so bad.
Maybe because he sing to the Lord , no many people agree with religious . He is wonderful on this record. I am looking on Apple Music is not there only UA-cam
He was on the Johnny Carson show. His singing "You might need somebody" was on the charts. Bad management? I'm sure later on. I personally know him and wish someone would make a movie about this incredibly talented man.
They said that he lost his voice after performing this song...sincerely it one of the most beautiful song I havr ever heard NEVER GET TIRED TO LISTEN TO IT EVER💔
This song has more meaning to me now. My entire family is not speaking to me. My daughter has poisoned them against me. I can't believe all this hurt can happen to an inocent person like me.
This is a voice given by God. There has never been and will never be anyone that will come close to the perfection of this man's voice and sound. A true genius who writes and teaches music, plays the guitar with no training and most remarkably with no eyesight. A true spiritual being.
Staggering talent !! Something VERY special! My God, what a testimonial by this unusual talent. The voice range is beyond anything I've ever heard!! Moving song for sure. Love this!
I heard Turley sing this song some 40+ years ago, I was not a Christian and I did not speak english but somehow I knew and understood what he was talking about in the song and I started to cry because it really touched my heart; fast forward to Jan 2020; now I accepted Jesus into my life and I speak english fluently and yet I already knew what he was talking about; thank you Turley, you are a true worshiper. I can only compare this song to "Amazing Grace."
Forty-five years ago, in my parked car outside of record revolution (Lakewood Ohio) I heard Turley Richards sing "The Voice of Jesus" on WMMS The Buzzard. It seared itself into my memory. Fast forward to 2009 (world-wide web) looked up the Title, Turley pops up! One day we will see this man walk across the stage and be honored by the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. I guarantee it.
Turley was a blind man. Maybe he sang so well because he couldn't see the scoll on others faces and therefore they didn't affect him. He came out of a garage band. He is dead now.
Thank you Turley for bringing joy to my husband with this song. He's long gone but I'm still returning.

Only God can gift this kind of talent ❤ Love you and Jesus!.
I used to sit with Turley when he sang that song in the 70’s in Greenwich Village! Always brought chills to my bones! Love it “Skullcap”
I heard this in 1973 and it shook my world. like Turley, I started down a path toward Jesus. Listen again and invite Him in.
That's about the time I heard it too, brother. It's still speaks to my heart about the amazing love of God through Christ Our Savior.
Amazing voice and heart! Truly the cry of the soul - heard by God and embraced in his Love! Thank you so much Turley Richards!
This mans voice brings the hair Up every time I listen to him.Divinity.

We ran to Jesus back in the day. What is with the people today running away from him?
Im not christian but this song is amazing.

This one's for you, Joe. RIP, brother.
I first heard this at age 19. I am now 60 something...and it hits me harder now.

I know him and have talked to him on the phone. He's amazing but his voice is heaven sent! He put a lot of soul in this song.❤
Staggering talent !! Something VERY special! My God, what a testimonial by this unusual talent. The voice range is beyond anything I've ever heard!! Moving song for sure. Love this!
I set next to him at Stevie Wonder show last night, pleasure meeting him !!
I don't think there was a Jesus God but it does not matter. This song is extraordinary.

I'm atheist, I study physics and my name is Jesus. But goddamn what a song
This song and understanding the infinite world of physics will lead you to God, brother.

Glory...Glory.....amén
This is one of the greatest songs that does not have any cover...why?
because nobody wants to come after this masterful performance
Actually, I HAVE heard this sung in a Missionary Baptist Church Choir. It sounded smoother than this version. ua-cam.com/video/BlZ53UTvvSI/v-deo.html
dill weed. is Turley still around? My burdens are light for now. I love this song. Thirsty one. I have the original albums.
Yes he is on Facebook and has a website, he just released a book!
Yes ! I think that he lives in Virginia.
7 full octaves

Sorry to poop your party but as of today he is still alive and kicking. And he is NOT completely blind. Only on one eye.
