Writer/director Michael Mann, and actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino at the Academy Event “Heat (1995)” on September 7, 2016 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
The genius of having a 'good guy', who is loud, erratic and who's life is always falling apart, come up against a 'bad guy' who is quiet, level and who's life is under complete control, blew my mind. And to show clearly which side of the law each of them is, when Vincent hugs that grieving mother, and when Neil mercilessly kills people when they are in his way, sets up the diner moment perfectly, opposite ends of every spectrum but not your stereotypical goodies and baddies, just like real life; nobody is all good and nobody is all bad, the character development of this film was worthy of an Oscar alone.
And you kind of tell that Neil had a hard life because Vincent holds his hand by his dying side so he wasn't completely bad. The only fucked up thing he did was abandoning the girl. Vin and him were bros.
Michael Mann must have a degree in psychology. These characters are so well thought out it’s ridiculous. I’ve seen this film countless times, every gets old.

I don’t think HEAT ever did get the kind of recognition and appreciation from the media, Hollywood, or critics that it earned. The crazy talented ensemble that meshed so well on screen and demonstrated so much fluidity with such dynamic characters. The score was so deeply embedded in the cinematography that it perfectly told the story, with, or with lack of, emotion. The direction of scenes kept you in the story from one aspect to another, not losing you in minuscule details. This is a very under appreciated movie that should not be recreated/re-visioned, although yes, it is a remake of its own. It was perfected, and it is a cinematic experience that I am thrilled to hear others admire.
Such a great film. I was in college at the time. One night I was writing a very long term paper. I needed a break. I knew the theater at the mall near where I went to school had a midnight showing of 'Heat' that night. I took a break. Went to the theater, and watched this midnight showing of the film. There were maybe a total of 15 people in the theater, and I went by myself. I had a soda, some popcorn, and a box of Raisinets (lol), and was able to just sit back and watch this amazing film. The shootout in downtown LA is maybe the best shootout scene I have ever seen. I eventually became an editor for TV and film, worked in Hollywood for 7 years, and really learned about film making. It's hard to ask talents like De Niro and Pacino nebulous, philosophical questions like these because they are so good at what they do that they just have sort of an innate understanding of the human condition. So it's hard for them to break down their performances in the way they're being asked sometimes. They want to give an answer that is satisfying, but it really can be answered simply by saying... instinct. They just have it. It's sounds counterintuitive, but I have directed a little bit. Just a very little, lol. I always tell actors the same thing which is... DON'T ACT. That's really the trick... it's to not act. Draw on whatever you can to make the performance not a performance. Use whatever you can to make it real. Anyway, funny side note. My grandmother was someone of some wealth, and some fame herself. She was a Broadway actress of some note in the 20's and 30's. Eventually, my family sold her house just north of New York City... after she was old and moved to another part of the country... to none other than Al Pacino. He also owned the house next door which he was living in at the time with his girlfriend who was Kathleen Turner. My mother and aunt were the ones that had to meet with him to do the closing. They met with him and Kathleen Turner multiple times, and said they were both so geeked on cocaine it was amazing. LOL. But they were very nice. lol. So the story about Pacino's character dabbling in drugs on the side is pretty funny to me. I am quite sure De Niro and Pacino left such things behind them decades ago. But it's funny nonetheless. Anyway, great film, and an interesting video. Just sharing here. Sorry for being so long winded. By the way... Pacino eventually sold the house to Diane Keaton, and she turned it into an art deco nightmare. LOL.
This is my new favorite movie! I'm glad, I finally bought it recently. I just fell in love with it! Pacino's character is crazy. Chipping away at coke, something he shouldn't be doing. It would have been nice if they did for recognition because it truly was a great movie but yet a true movie fan doesn't let that cademy awards, oscars or bitter movie critics deter you from watching or seeing a great movie based on their opinion
Arguably the best crime and heist movie, and one of the best action movie at the same time. Seen it countless times, i will probably watch it many more times.
The filmmaking IQ on display here between Michael Mann's explanation to Christopher Nolan's questions is off the charts and I could listen to it all day, just wow.
This was a joy to watch! These are two of the greatest actors of our time and it was great to see them together when this came out. Whenever people ask me what are some of the greatest movies I've seen, this comes up as one of them. Also I just to say, for these guys to be such great dramatic actors, they have great comedic timing. They can be really funny as well!
How beautiful is that. Christopher Nolan the legendary, genius director he is. Asking a beautiful in depth heartwarming question to two of the most iconic actors of all time. Not to forget Michael Mann, another great director sitting beside.

as good as christopher nolan is, he'll never put out anything as good as heat. it was a perfect combination of all aspects of film making which created one of the greatest works ever made.
@@dhruviin None of his movies are on the level of Heat. The only one that would come close is The Dark Knight, in which he didn't even write the story. He wrote none of the stories for his Batman trilogy actually. Insomnia was a remake of the Norwegian film "Insomnia" 5 years prior. Nolan is a good director, but he doesn't fool me with his gimmick plot devices. He can't just tell a good story like Heat, it's often a cliched plot device like 'memory within a memory' (Memento), or 'dream within a dream' (Inception), time reversal (Tenet), time travel (Interstellar), or evil twin brother (The Prestige). Nineteen1900Hundred That's true. He did a good job. I seen other movies try to be Heat and fail. I also see elements of The Godfather Part 2 and Empire Strikes Back.
I was 17 when Heat came out. One of the things I noticed about it was that I new or recognized ALMOST every single actor in it. Man or woman. And there were a lot of people in it! Not one character played by anything other then a professional. It is, in my opinion, the best movie ever made.
Heat is the closest these two have ever done to a Western, and it feels so ever suited to their talents. People draw comparisons to The Wild Bunch and Peckinpah in general, but the film it reminds me the most of is Unforgiven. Particularly the parallel between De Niro and Eastwood's characters. You could almost imagine if Mann directed this in 1985, with Clint and Gene Hackman in the leads trading a little on being Dirty Harry vs. Popeye Doyle.

Actors dont study the goddamn psychology of character like a book. They just feel thats the most right way to react in that scene and deliver the dialogues.
Heat is one of the best films ever made. Not one flaw, not one I can really think of at least in it. The movie is sad to me, you feel bad for the bad guys. The movie rocks
one of the best movie ,wow HEAT- greetings to Vincent and Neil, Au revoir ,Ciao
Pacino and De Niro were both unbelievably good in this movie.
This is by far my top 5 movies of all time.
Simple questions made unnecessarily complicated. Take it easy Nolan
damn right hahaha
Quite rightt
That defines his whole career.
Exactly, like his plot lines: Memory within a memory, dream within a dream, time reversal, time travel, evil twin brother. Yawn.
Al pacino is there like bro you do know I was out of my mind on coke during that film? lol
I watched Godfather trilogy in one single day. That was yesterday. Today I watched heat. Al pacino and de niro are great actors. Now I understand Why people are eagerly waiting for "The Irishman".
And I want both these great actors live long life.
This is one of those films that doesn't need awards in order to know how good it was and that it's a bonafide classic!
Every time I listen to Micheal Mann I ending thinking this may be the smartest person on the planet.
The Two GOATS on the same stage. Breathtaking
Living legends
The filmmaking IQ on display here between Michael Mann's explanation to Christopher Nolan's questions is off the charts and I could listen to it all day, just wow.
Christopher Nolan laughing like a giddy school boy. Now that is a sight!
you should see the interview he did with quentin tarantino, he's laughing his ass off lol
Still stands head and shoulders above so many oscar winners, this film still stands the test of time. 2019
OH MY GAD WHAT A PANEL
De NIro and Al Pacino, two masters of acting. Michael Mann does the best he does.
Michael Mann is an underrated director. He’s my favorite of all time.
7 people dont know what to do when they feel the heat around the corner.
Dhyan Valdes nice
How beautiful is that. Christopher Nolan the legendary, genius director he is. Asking a beautiful in depth heartwarming question to two of the most iconic actors of all time. Not to forget Michael Mann, another great director sitting beside.
This is just simply amazing, It's so great to see them side by side again. Just look at this view ladies and gentleman, the history of cinema is right in front of you. Truly the greatest actors of the world of all time has eyes ever seen. The scientists should discover the fuckin' immortality for these two good fellas.
Listening to Nolan and Bay talk about films shows you how deep these guys get in to storytelling. It's awesome.
Heat is one of the highest underrated movie by the ACADEMY
I love how Christopher Nolan is such a fan of films. You can tell he really loves Heat. The Dark Knight is basically his love letter to it.
Al Pacino was like "aww this adorable nerd" to Nolan when he was asked about how iconic the nature of the character hehe
all the while thinking Son all I did was my job there's no substance here lol
i love pacino, he is an exceptional actor, both he and de niro are a perfect combination... wish there were more films with both of them in it
Robert De Niro does not like interviews... but besides that they are both Legends
For all its technical achievements, it deserved at least a nomination for best original screenplay. Thee characters are so well drawn, they seem real, it's almost like a book, lots of nuances and tonalities, and vignettes
as good as christopher nolan is, he'll never put out anything as good as heat. it was a perfect combination of all aspects of film making which created one of the greatest works ever made.
Momento, Inception!? Heat was a legendary but all of his movies are too
@@dhruviin None of his movies are on the level of Heat.
C'mon, evil twin brother? 😆He can do better than that. You shouldn't need a lazy or complex plot to entertain an audience.
WOW i would of never thought that Michael Mann would be deep and psychological. He is inspiring to listen to
God bless you mr. pacino
Two of the greatest actors yet so humble in their everyday appearance.
Al Pacino all the way!!!
Heat is my favorite movie of all time. Great acting and directing and also amazing dialogue.
Look at the love between them Pacino and deniro they're like brothers
Glad to see that the greatest modern filmmaker is a big fan of one of the all time great films
This is the most underrated film of all time. It's my 2nd favourite crime film after The Godfather
Actually think its better. Just everything is perfect.
The best you can get on screen, you can't stop looking at the screen no even if you cough, Al and Bob, I could never figured it out which one was my favourite..too damn hard..together they are from another planet..italian pride
Easy. De Niro--Superior actor. Fav can be anyone.
nobody is better than Pacino!
well, De niro is easily better.
@@Aman-nk5uq De Niro is the worst actor ever and he hides behind all the TRULY GREAT ACTORS. But you people are deranged and think it's great acting! I pity you, fool.🤣🤣🤣
This guy speaks great.I can listen to him all day
I love Chris. But sometimes I've noticed his questions or explanations do fly WAY over peoples heads. But he was the perfect moderator for the anniversary and we all find out why in 2008.
the dark knight bank robbery scene - heavily influenced by the bank scene in heat.
Harsh Parmar What movie came out in 2008 by Chris Nolan? #PopQuiz
Just the robbery? The whole movie was influenced by Heat !
Nineteen1900Hundred That's true. He did a good job. I seen other movies try to be Heat and fail. I also see elements of The Godfather Part 2 and Empire Strikes Back.
TheGooners11 WE HEARD YOU.
HEAT. The best occasion to see 2 living legends at their best!
In this interview, Pacino's hair hasn't looked this good since "The Godfather Part II."
at donnie brasco his hair cut was better
it wasn't bad in "simone" either. he didn't even have his side burns for once in that.
what? pacino had great hair in bobby deerfield, scarface, carlito's way, and manglehorn
Jav Ag
He's definitely looked "different" the 2 times Ives seen him in-person.
What about dog day afternoon? His hair was crazy in that
I was 17 when Heat came out.
One of the greatest movies ever made
