I enjoyed your thoughts on the nominations, couldn't agree more about Keith Urban's Coming Home. I am stoked that Dierks is getting recognition for his amazing Mountain album and I would love to see him win every category he is nominated in, because it would be well earned. I also thought that for sure Carly Pearce should have had a nod for new artist, and I thought it was a bit strange that Lauren Alaina was nominated as a new artist, as she has been around for a while, though this last album has been good for defining her career. But she as well as Brett and Luke have been nominated before...maybe change the name back to Horizon Award or Breakout Artist to more accurately describe the award? I was surprised Lanco got a vocal group nomination and not the New Artist nod--I doubt it has to do with the name change making them not technically new. I really thought that Garth deserved a Entertainer nomination as this past year he really killed it touring selling out--he did 9 sold out shows in Sioux Falls, SD over the course of 2 weekends. I agree that Old Dominion has a good shot at Group, though they have yet to have a song that I like, they have been having a crazy good year--though I wouldn't be surprised if Little Big Town won again. I really liked Kacey Musgraves album Golden Hour but I am not sure it could pull off a win for her as my choice would be Dierks. I might be the only one who thinks this but I that High Valley would have been nice to see in the duo category. I think it might be interesting as country grows and changes to have traditional and contemporary categories to appreciate more artists and their music, as radio is trending more towards pop, while on the other hand Texas Dirt Road and the Cowboy Country movement are really growing and getting out attention with folksy/Americana/ traditional storytelling that racks up critical acclaim like Chris Stapleton, Cody Jinks, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, etc.
I agree with every person who’s brought up Scotty! He had one of the most successful hits of his career this year with Five More Minutes. That to me is the single of the year. No question in my mind. That not only moved people, but it brings back an older country feel and there’s a genuine feel to it. It’s more relatable than most songs on country radio today, yet he gets snubbed. It’s so sad, he’s by far the most underrated country artist out in the market currently.
Great video. I think Stapleton will get at least two awards. He's good for the industry. If they want country music to keep a genuine/original image, and less cookie cutter and plastic, he needs to win. Sure he ran the table last year, but who cares? Give credit where credit is due. This year's nominations will be so much better than last year's, mostly because we got Garth and carrie for entertainer, brooks and dunn for vocal duo of the year, and center point road for album of the Year. I actually like center point road unlike most people. I even have a whole review of it on my channel. You can go watch it to find out why.
I think the only reason Keith Urban was nominated for entertainer of the year was because his concerts are interesting. He has a lot going on and his babd is fun to watch. Yes, Graffiti u was not as good as some of his older ones.
Carrie is on another level than any other singer in history - she’s been robbed her rightful Vocals Awards for too long - this must be her year - also why wasn’t CRY PRETTY nominated for best Song and Single ? I used to work for the CMAs, all I can say is that the entire organization is a joke. Due to non-disclosure contracts I am not allowed to discuss much more.... But let's just say we ALL eventually left the organization due to practices that we weren't comfortable with. I then moved from Nashville to a larger city to work for a major label and the recruiter that hired me literally said: Nashville is not the REAL industry: It's sexiest, homophobic, and many ways still very racist. (She was RIGHT). Moving out of Nashville was the best decision of my life. CMA's, like the OSCARS, are going to have to seriously look into reshaping its voting criteria in order to bring more diversity. I also worked for the Recording Academy and loved it. Like you, I feel the GRAMMY AWARDS tend to be a better representation of the industry.
Dew W We have a big country music show in the UK called Country to Country which people are now getting apathetic with because it's simply not country music anymore. I reckon now the bubble has burst for this show and audiences will now decline as it's just getting too expensive. As for me I'm just not interested in a pop show which is all it is now and DEFINATELY won't be attending any more which is a shame or is it a sham.
I wish you could explain why Luke Bryan doesn’t get nominated for anything else he’s a Male vocalist of the year and other nominations. Oh you’re pretty much saying that they pick their favorites and they don’t give artists who are deserving a chance to win an award.
You don’t need to like Keith Urban but he’s a very creative artist who enjoys working with a lot of other producers. I think the nominations make sense especially if you’ve ever seen him live he is an extremely talented guitarist and he puts on an amazing concert. Now Keith isn’t really country anymore and I can definitely understand why people don’t always like him but he’s still a talented person and deserves some recognition.
I'm going to try and keep my thoughts short and simple: 1) Why is Keith Urban nominated for anything that is the dumpster fire of his most recent album? 2) Why was Port Saint Joe snubbed for album of the year nomination? (My favorite album across all genres) But out of the actual nominees I want either Dierks or Kacey to win; I think it goes to Thomas. 3) Why is Body Like a Back Road nominated for a 2nd year in a row? 4) Why are Luke Combs, Lauren Alaina and Brett Young nominated for Best New Artist for the 2nd year in a row? Carly Pearce and Lanco were both snubbed in this category. 5) Jason Aldean probably pulls Entertainer of the Year this year, even though I think it should go to Stapleton. Also, the lack of females in the category is complete and utter crap. 6) Male Vocalist goes to Stapleton, he's the best vocalist but my bias has me wanting Dierks win it. 7) Female probably goes to Carrie, but I want it going to Kacey. 8) Song of the year I want it to go to Drowns the Whiskey (really like that song, and it hurts me to admit it, because I don't like Aldean), but I think it goes to Tequila. 9)Single of the Year goes to Meant to Be, but I want it to go to Drowns the Whiskey or Drinkin' Problem. 10) Vocal Duo I want to go to Brothers Osborne, I think it's D+S's year. 11) Group goes to Little Big Town (it always does), I would prefer it go to Midland or Lanco (both put on a great live show) 12) Musical Event I want to go to Burning Man, but it will go to Meant to Be

Not surprised that Drunk Girl got so much love. It's the perfect male-savior complex song that dudes sing to make themselves feel good about not taking advantage of a drunk woman. Problematic concept at its core. Lauren Alaina should be in Female Vocal over Miranda and Carly Pearce should take her spot in New Artist. Maren wins Female Vocal and honestly should've been considered for EOTY. I get that she's not monster famous, but she had a bigger year than any other female I could think of putting in that category.

Still patiently waiting for outlaw country to get some recognition. Stapleton and Combs are a start, but this pop crap just makes me sick. I get it some people like it, but me and many other former radio listeners have been pushed away. Midland is a good outlier (real country). Cody Jinks and Sturgil Simpson sell out almost everywhere they perform yet not a peep, not to even mention Tyler Childers.
The tide is slowly turning, I think. And these guys are playing a different game altogether. They aren't trying to court the Nashville big wigs, and it's working for them. Part of what makes them cool is that they AREN'T at these shows. Right?

Oh, and since we're bringing up Garth Brooks... That year he won Entertainer of the Year? Yeah, he didn't do a damned thing that year -- or the year prior, for that matter. Carrie Underwood, on the other hand, headlined the HISTORICAL, record-breaking Storyteller Tour which lasted all year long and then some. She had to break it off into two parts, since it was a WORLD TOUR... She also had just about every single arena sold out that she went to. And I'm not sure if you realized this but that live version of the I Will Always Love You cover is from that tour... I'm pretty sure the only one who has covered that song better was Whitney Houston. Just throwing that out there.
First off...I wish I had a friend like you to discuss the insider corruption of country music awards shows with...Second, I agree with a lot of what your saying, however I personally was kinda upset to see Carly Pearce absent in the New Artist category. In my opinion she would have been a much better selection over some of the others who have been out for years.

I'm with you on Luke Combs winning New Artist. Luke has been such a surprise phenomenon. His debut album is okay, certainly not great, but he's got a voice and presence and personality that is connecting with country fans. And he's a singer-songwriter who worked his ass off in the Southeast before getting to this point. He's earned it, which is more than I can say for the endless stream of former athlete pretty boys in the country genre. As for Keith Urban, has anyone received more nominations and lost in the history of the CMA Awards? It seems obvious that the CMA loves his celebrity status and Hollywood wife. They also know he sucks, so he'll keep losing. Great point about the number of producers on his wretched album. It's really a shame, because Keith is a genuinely talented guy. But somewhere he really went off the deep end -- midlife crisis? -- and completely lacks any focus or vision for his art or legacy in the genre, as if he even cares about country music to begin with.
I’ll start by saying isn’t this the 5th anniversary of Chris Janson being nominated as New Artist of the Year? It feels like he gets this nomination every year. Have you ever seen Keith Urban or Chris Stapleton in concert? No joke I didn’t get the KU thing until I saw him in concert. Dude entertainer of the year and mainly any category is not about what gender you identify as it’s about how good of the year overall. I think most people are fine with women being huge in country music, but there is a problem if all we are judging people on is their gender not their music. I think he deserved entertainer of the year because he is a great guy to go watch live and it isn't about the music it is a bout how well they entertain and he has lots of energy and loves his fans. Putting in female artist in the consideration for EotY just to fill a quota would not help anyone. They've collected five artists that they think all have a legitimate chance of winning the category, and taking one of them out just to put a female artist that they don't think has a chance of taking the award is just disingenuous. I agree that Carrie is a global superstar, and I think that with her new album, the tour, exposure in the msm she has a very good chance of being nominated/winning EotY next year, but we'll see.

Ok I gotta admit my man. Ya keith may not be Full on country but it’s 2019 my man. Technology and music is changing not only in country but in every genre. You can’t expect it to be Garth brooks startch jeans and Cowboy hats. I personally love Keith I love that he blends so many different genres together. He never claimed his album is country. And says he doesn’t think of genre when creating which I love. I hate how much flack he’s been getting he’s extremely talented puts on an astounding show. He’s incredibly talented. Graffiti U may not be a country record but you shouldn’t hate on Keith so much. Its so funny to me that in the UK we only really get the women of country music coming through loud and strong Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, Cam, Kelsey Ballerini, Jennifer Nettles and Maren Morris are probably the best known female country stars here and we love them. Brad Paisley and Chris Young are probably the biggest guys but on our normal BBC radio the women are played more often than the men. We do see that there is a sexist issue there at C2C our biggest country show Brad Paisley thanked everyone except Cam in 2017 and people seemed to really dismiss her as though she was invisible and I found it quite alarming/ surprising when your biggest stars Worldwide are women Reba, Dolly, Tammy, Loretta, Shania, Emmylou and Patsy and personally I didn't have a clue that country music was like that until 2017 and I figure it must be a recent thing because otherwise how would those amazing ladies have made it so far. It really annoyed me but the CMAs are hanging themselves because they are making their sexism so obvious that the ladies will just go from strength to strength. Basically my point is, even across the pond, we are giving the CMAs a look...

Ok you can't go from "the CMA's are the gold standard award show...and I respect them" to a few minutes later "it's totally corruption and agencys and voting blocks". Also "Carrie, she's never made a album as good as Miranda" lol Blown Away alone is better, more innovative and creative that Miranda's entire discography. But as you said agency WME will buy another award for Miranda that she doesn't deserve, and she know it, that's why she looks awkward in her speech everytime. And last, I would love to see a woman in the Entertainer category but Miranda play in small venues and she don't even sell out, all her singles flopped hard and her current tour is a co-headline and again small venues, and Carrie was in between albums and is the only woman that can compete with the guys when it comes to huge touring numbers.

I think the only reason Keith Urban was nominated for entertainer of the year was because his concerts are interesting. He has a lot going on and his babd is fun to watch. Yes, Graffiti u was not as good as some of his older ones.

I used to work for the CMAs, all I can say is that the entire organization is a joke. Due to non-disclosure contracts I am not allowed to discuss much more.... But let's just say we ALL eventually left the organization due to practices that we weren't comfortable with. I then moved from Nashville to a larger city to work for a major label and the recruiter that hired me literally said: Nashville is not the REAL industry: It's sexiest, homophobic, and many ways still very racist. (She was RIGHT). Moving out of Nashville was the best decision of my life.
CMA's, like the OSCARS, are going to have to seriously look into reshaping its voting criteria in order to bring more diversity.
I also worked for the Recording Academy and loved it. Like you, I feel the GRAMMY AWARDS tend to be a better representation of the industry.
Dew W We have a big country music show in the UK called Country to Country which people are now getting apathetic with because it's simply not country music anymore. I reckon now the bubble has burst for this show and audiences will now decline as it's just getting too expensive. As for me I'm just not interested in a pop show which is all it is now and DEFINATELY won't be attending any more which is a shame or is it a sham.

I wish you could explain why Luke Bryan doesn’t get nominated for anything else he’s a Male vocalist of the year and other nominations. Oh you’re pretty much saying that they pick their favorites and they don’t give artists who are deserving a chance to win an award.
You don’t need to like Keith Urban but he’s a very creative artist who enjoys working with a lot of other producers. I think the nominations make sense especially if you’ve ever seen him live he is an extremely talented guitarist and he puts on an amazing concert. Now Keith isn’t really country anymore and I can definitely understand why people don’t always like him but he’s still a talented person and deserves some recognition.
I'm going to try and keep my thoughts short and simple:
1) Why is Keith Urban nominated for anything that is the dumpster fire of his most recent album?
2) Why was Port Saint Joe snubbed for album of the year nomination? (My favorite album across all genres) But out of the actual nominees I want either Dierks or Kacey to win; I think it goes to Thomas.
3) Why is Body Like a Back Road nominated for a 2nd year in a row?
4) Why are Luke Combs, Lauren Alaina and Brett Young nominated for Best New Artist for the 2nd year in a row? Carly Pearce and Lanco were both snubbed in this category.
5) Jason Aldean probably pulls Entertainer of the Year this year, even though I think it should go to Stapleton. Also, the lack of females in the category is complete and utter crap.
6) Male Vocalist goes to Stapleton, he's the best vocalist but my bias has me wanting Dierks win it.
7) Female probably goes to Carrie, but I want it going to Kacey.
8) Song of the year I want it to go to Drowns the Whiskey (really like that song, and it hurts me to admit it, because I don't like Aldean), but I think it goes to Tequila.
9)Single of the Year goes to Meant to Be, but I want it to go to Drowns the Whiskey or Drinkin' Problem.
10) Vocal Duo I want to go to Brothers Osborne, I think it's D+S's year.
11) Group goes to Little Big Town (it always does), I would prefer it go to Midland or Lanco (both put on a great live show)
12) Musical Event I want to go to Burning Man, but it will go to Meant to Be

Lauren Alaina should be in Female Vocal over Miranda and Carly Pearce should take her spot in New Artist. Maren wins Female Vocal and honestly should've been considered for EOTY. I get that she's not monster famous, but she had a bigger year than any other female I could think of putting in that category.

Still patiently waiting for outlaw country to get some recognition. Stapleton and Combs are a start, but this pop crap just makes me sick. I get it some people like it, but me and many other former radio listeners have been pushed away. Midland is a good outlier (real country). Cody Jinks and Sturgil Simpson sell out almost everywhere they perform yet not a peep, not to even mention Tyler Childers.
The tide is slowly turning, I think. And these guys are playing a different game altogether. They aren't trying to court the Nashville big wigs, and it's working for them. Part of what makes them cool is that they AREN'T at these shows. Right?

Oh, and since we're bringing up Garth Brooks... That year he won Entertainer of the Year? Yeah, he didn't do a damned thing that year -- or the year prior, for that matter. Carrie Underwood, on the other hand, headlined the HISTORICAL, record-breaking Storyteller Tour which lasted all year long and then some. She had to break it off into two parts, since it was a WORLD TOUR... She also had just about every single arena sold out that she went to. And I'm not sure if you realized this but that live version of the I Will Always Love You cover is from that tour... I'm pretty sure the only one who has covered that song better was Whitney Houston. Just throwing that out there.

I'm with you on Luke Combs winning New Artist. Luke has been such a surprise phenomenon. His debut album is okay, certainly not great, but he's got a voice and presence and personality that is connecting with country fans. And he's a singer-songwriter who worked his ass off in the Southeast before getting to this point. He's earned it, which is more than I can say for the endless stream of former athlete pretty boys in the country genre. As for Keith Urban, has anyone received more nominations and lost in the history of the CMA Awards? It seems obvious that the CMA loves his celebrity status and Hollywood wife. They also know he sucks, so he'll keep losing. Great point about the number of producers on his wretched album. It's really a shame, because Keith is a genuinely talented guy. But somewhere he really went off the deep end -- midlife crisis? -- and completely lacks any focus or vision for his art or legacy in the genre, as if he even cares about country music to begin with.

Putting in female artist in the consideration for EotY just to fill a quota would not help anyone. They've collected five artists that they think all have a legitimate chance of winning the category, and taking one of them out just to put a female artist that they don't think has a chance of taking the award is just disingenuous. I agree that Carrie is a global superstar, and I think that with her new album, the tour, exposure in the msm she has a very good chance of being nominated/winning EotY next year, but we'll see.

And says he doesn’t think of genre when creating which I love. I hate how much flack he’s been getting he’s extremely talented puts on an astounding show. He’s incredibly talented. Graffiti U may not be a country record but you shouldn’t hate on Keith so much. Its so funny to me that in the UK we only really get the women of country music coming through loud and strong Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, Cam, Kelsey Ballerini, Jennifer Nettles and Maren Morris are probably the best known female country stars here and we love them. Brad Paisley and Chris Young are probably the biggest guys but on our normal BBC radio the women are played more often than the men. We do see that there is a sexist issue there at C2C our biggest country show Brad Paisley thanked everyone except Cam in 2017 and people seemed to really dismiss her as though she was invisible and I found it quite alarming/ surprising when your biggest stars Worldwide are women Reba, Dolly, Tammy, Loretta, Shania, Emmylou and Patsy and personally I didn't have a clue that country music was like that until 2017 and I figure it must be a recent thing because otherwise how would those amazing ladies have made it so far. It really annoyed me but the CMAs are hanging themselves because they are making their sexism so obvious that the ladies will just go from strength to strength. Basically my point is, even across the pond, we are giving the CMAs a look...

Ok you can't go from "the CMA's are the gold standard award show...and I respect them" to a few minutes later "it's totally corruption and agencys and voting blocks". But as you said agency WME will buy another award for Miranda that she doesn't deserve, and she know it, that's why she looks awkward in her speech everytime.
