It's amazing how easy it is for a young adult to go into 300k in student loan debt but almost impossible to get a 30k loan to start a small buisness.
Exactly....And the reason is that small business loans for start-ups aren’t guaranteed by the government. If they were, banks would be handing them out like candy.
Rio, with regards to a loan for a small business: In April a pal of mine at the military base in Sierra Vista in Arz who is a black guy old me his daughter
told me his daughter ( she's 24 and lives in Illinois) informed him that kind of up to $100k were in the pipeline for non-white people.
Now we know where that was to come from. And that's part of the "social infrastructure bill".
My pal said it just wasn't racist, but totally insane as the main Trump for the loan was color and not ability.
It's what they want it's called control if you keep people poor or in debt you can control them why you think so many people on welfare it was only to help people so they said in the sixties they told black women true story if you leave the father we will pay your bills

yes, having family that can help is a privilege many do not have. my parents had the ability to save for my college but decided not to. they also refused to sign my FAFSA so i had to jump through hoops to get college aid rolling. i ended up joining the military after 2 years of college. they paid the remaining 9k of my loans. i also understand that joining an organization that pays off loans is also a big privilege. my parents were pretty upset when i told them i signed up. but what choice did i really have?
funny story: a church friend always bragged about working hard for everything they ever had. they were 100% against people receiving government aid BUT it was discovered that their parents gifted them 45k for their wedding!

Bingo. Until they address the corruption and price gauging in colleges, this issue will continue. There's no reason a dorm with 2 other people should be 10k each a semester. Speaking from personal experience.

I have a 19 yr old grandson who will graduate from a 2 year trade school in December as a qualified pipe welder ( my craft for 50 years ). He worked and paid as he went to school. He is debt free, and has a trade he can make over $100,000 a year with. Not bad for 19 years of age.

I was that kid that was lied to. Took out loans to get through college. Went to a public state college to keep it cheap. Majored in Comms/Marketing. The recession hit, and all entry level jobs now wanted 5 years experience or a Master's degree, so I got one of those too so I could be more "marketable." Geared my entire experience towards skills that employers claimed they were "desperate" for in employees- research, writing, public speaking, using new tech and data applications, and critical thinking.
After jumping through all the hoops, employers made every excuse to not hire or pay a fair wage- I didn't have enough experience, I wanted too much money, I didn't speak Spanish, I wasn't "diverse" enough, I lived too far away, I don't use the company's proprietary software, etc.
The government needs to get out of education, but employers also need to stop being lazy and hire capable graduates to train and pay properly rather than waiting for desperate journeymen to lowball. It's a vicious cycle.

You could go overseas and teach English. Thailand is a great place to live and work. The cost of living is very low and the standard is good. As for your loans, you don't have to pay them as long as you make less than $105,000 a year. You can claim the foreign income credit and forebear your loans every year.
A few days ago I watched a sitcom episode from the mid 1970s in which a recent college grad said a bachelor's degree doesn't mean anything by itself anymore--he got into a Master's program through a fellowship to eventually secure..... an entry level position.
@@valdavis7461 Interesting. So you still owe them but indefinitely forbear them. Do you have to work for a foreign company? What if you work for a US company remotely but live abroad?
An employer is not going to "pay you properly" and train you too. It is one or the other. If you already have the skills, you will be paid properly. If you need to be trained to do the job, you will get entry level wages. As you already found out, a college degree alone is less than worthless (when you still have student loan debt).
The college experience is not an end-all cure-all for a successful financial future. But it is promoted as such; and this is the problem.

Agree. Only in this country where free tuition is in abundance. 1. GI Bill. 2. Pell Grant. 3. Tuition Reimbursement Program from so many private corporations. I didn't pay for college, my sibling, my cousin's, and now nephews and nieces. It's free and all of us are making six figures.

We should also examine Universities and Colleges for price fixing.
It's supply and demand, the government backs everyone's student loans so a bunch of people go to school. The problem is government shouldn't be guaranteeing everyone's loan for any degree, student loans should only be offered on degrees that are in demand in the work force.

Price fixing? No. We should be pulling their accreditations just on the fact they are diploma mills. Colleges and Universities have become adult day care facilities. The reason why they spew out so many worthless degree holders is because it's easy money for the schools and an easy graduation for the student. Pull all taxes and Federal grants from these schools.

Complete BS, in 2019 69% of graduates took out student loans and 90% of those who took out loans said going to school wouldn't have been possible with out student loans. That's GRADUATES there is no telling how many people took out loans and dropped out before getting a degree. So a university loosing over 62% of it's students would not effect demand. I think not.

What fool does not think ahead , what's the job market for a person with a degree in women's studies before signing a loan for $70k to pay for a year at UCLA ? Apparently there are a lot of people getting useless degrees then expecting everybody else to cover the cost. Many of them came from those families that were not poor or fragmented.
You know, I went to college because in order to apply for the job I wanted, I had to have a bachelors degree. So, let’s not forget that industry has also added to the problem.

Agreed. Although I don't buy into this "degrees are worthless" nonsense. I believe if you get a degree in liberal arts, African studies and fashion design be prepared to struggle. Also, without a bachelor's degree the more viable jobs will often discard your application before the interview process even begin. It's hard to get into a safe without the combination or key. You can't get the job without being recruited and sitting in front of a interviewer. So people should stop this feel good anti- degree silliness, because this is where we are. Besides, much of this talk is from people who never attended or finished college.
It's called credentialism. Requiring degrees and even advanced degrees for jobs a middle schooler could do.
And today many of these industries want " 2 years work experience" with your BA degree, fresh out of college/uni.
Thank you for bringing this up because I was about to say something myself. The kids were not the only ones making the dumb decision to go to college because the public and private job sectors were all in on it as well so I don't know why they didn't bring that up when that is the majority of the reason why most people try to go to school and get the degree. You won't be able to get a raise and neither will you be able to move up in the company if you don't have a degree.

It had nothing to do with failure, the banks were spooked even while he was covering the payments. If anything, be angry with the banks.
Okay, first I gave a trolly response to what was a trolly comment that didn't speak to my point. I like Dave and I've read a couple of his books, and I think he has a lot of great things to say. Declaring bankruptcy is not the same as student loan forgiveness. Think about it: how can a bank repossess an education? A judge dictated the terms to Dave and he took his medicine. Dave has never tried to hide his failures. I'm not going to "cancel" him. But neither am I fanboy; I do take issue with certain things he does. On the whole, there's a lot to be learned, and this country needs a wake-up call: a successful career is not about the degree, but the value you can offer.

My son loves mechanics. He started at the bottom changing oil at a dealership. He worked hard and got noticed. The dealership is now paying for him to attend a local community College where he is working on his masters mechanics certification. Thats one way to do it. I started out repairing cars at used car lots in 1977 after learning automotive repair inhigh school. I have never wasted my time with joke ASE certification, I owe not one cent of student loans and nearly 45 years later i have a waiting list of people wanting me to repair their older and classic cars because the kids coming out of Lincoln Tech and other schools are absolutely clueless about anything if they cant access an OBD II port for electronic diagnostics.....they teach very little basic theory and engineering history, its ALL about "driveability and emissions"......."whats that thing on top of the engine and how does it work? (carburetor) and "whats that thing with all the big wires coming out of it?" (distributor)..What????..this vehicle doesnt have control modules for EVERYTHING?
Thats what we get now from most kids in automotive repair.

Collage is a scam I skipped it i am 24 years old working as a janitor in a school making $50,000 a year without over time. I get full benefits sick time, vacation, every federal holiday, personal time , pension , health care, dental,... waiting for the parks department job to open up that only union can get.
It’s not for everyone. That’s it. I want my doctor to be college educated. The school janitor at my daughter’s school can have on the job training that would more than suffice.
Do keep in mind that you haven’t dodged anything. You’ve just put off an inevitable. You’ll absolutely need to get a degree at some point if you plan to raise a family and kids who you’ve set up to take the next leap forward financially lest they end up just like you (or worse) at 24. A degree is less about what you’re learning (though that is important) and more about what you learn while you’re learning. You’re gonna hit a ceiling fast and will probably want more, and your gf/wife is going to push you to become more and unlock your potential. And she should if she’s the right gal. But hey, you could always be some beta MGTOW soy boy. That works for some I guess.

Honestly, college isn't worth the cost anymore. It used to be that having a degree meant something.
But honestly, employers really don't verify a degree unless it's a high up position. I have friends who lied about a degree and experience. They just learned the job watching others and no one caught on. They have been in their position for years.
That’s the point in going to college though: so you can get a high up position. Why would anyone want to spend their entire career at the bottom and not move high up in the company? It may not be required for entry level jobs, but it is required for the jobs that actually pay well. I have a friend that skipped college originally, worked his way up to director, and was stuck at that level for well over a decade because he didn’t have a degree, then went to college at night for almost a decade, graduated, then got promoted to VP and retired with around $30,000,000 saved for retirement and a pension. I myself went to college and just retired with upper 8 figures saved for retirement because I was able to make it pretty far up at my firm, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without a degree.
A degree shows employers that you have the discipline and the grit to finish your education, Its risky to hire people who don't want to invest in their own future. I see education as a fun thing and actually going back to school next year just for learning sake. It will cost me 25k but i won't have to take out a loan for it
I don’t know how long ago your story happened but I work in HR and we always credential new hires and if they lied about the degree they lose their job. It doesn’t matter if they are a clerk or a Partner, we are checking to see if the degree they say they have has been granted.
There are plenty of jobs that have to have educations. Doctors, engineers, accountants/money managers to name just a few

This has been a problem for decades. From UCLA, I remember some graduates couldn’t get a job with their environmental studies major. They ended up working cashier jobs or going back to city college to learn for a real career such as nursing, etc.
I could have done the student loan forgiveness as a RN but I couldn’t imagine paying off $64k in 10yrs….I worked extra shifts and paid it off in THREE years myself.

My daughter earned her doctorate in pharmacy, and has paid off 100k student loan in a less than 2 years.
@@TERMIN8TOR99 probably got a scholarship or grants. Probably didnt use a private student loan company. Probably was helped by her parents to some degree. And the big one,, she got a good paying job.. I encourage people to work hard and pay it off, just understand it won't be as easy for some.

"Higher Education" has become quite the scam. i got a 4 yr degree in the 80's, i think tuition was around $25/credit hour, it was about $100/credit hour 10 yrs later when my sister was attending there. we could only borrow $2500/yr in student loans then and that was enough to pay for room/board in a dorm. now i think kids borrow $10K/yr just for undergrad degrees?? my tuition and student fees to get an elec engr degree cost me less than $12K in the 80's, and i did have an extra year of 400 level physics that cost another $4K. that was pretty reasonable for a degree back then.

I worked two jobs in college while going to school full time and by the grace of God, got out of school completely debt-free. I wasn't going on vacations, had no car and had the cheapest meal plan possible. Knowing that today I am working in a job completely contrary to my major, it makes me feel a little better that I don't have to invest today's earnings in yesterday's degree.

To simplify: "Student Loans are a scam!" A Ponzi scheme on steroids! Early 1990's I worked summer fast food and earned enough to pay tuition at a state university(5+ years engineering). Worked part time at Sears to cover my bills the rest of the year. That's simply impossible now days, just like home ownership. The easy availability of massive loans drove the cost through the roof.

Exactly well said. The biggest lie being forced on this generation, is you have to have a college degree to be successful. Which is simply not true. I also agree, things were a lot different 30 years ago, a college degree meant a lot more, than it does now. However, with the majority of baby boomers retiring and nearing retirement means many skilled trades are in high demand with some paying just as much, perhaps more, than someone with a college degree in tens of thousands in student loans.
The way student loan forgiveness works is after 25 years you are forgiven, however it is considered earned income by the IRS then you have to pay the IRS. So yes it's a scam because you still have to pay for it.

The banks and the schools should take on this burden, NOT the taxpayers.
The moment the fed reserve printed money is the moment you're no longer a taxpayer. You owe the fed that paper money or have your stuff seized. Either way, you'll be taking this burden one way or the other.

I was knocked down for being a hairdresser my whole life. I'm now retired. I was able to support 2 kids and live a life of joy. I owned my own salon for 20 years. I was able to back out and not even work for the last 10 years and still the salon supported me. In my earlier years, I could work the hours around my kid's schedules and be home with them when I wanted to and go to their sports and activities. That was more important to me than living with a high salary.

I don't know who will read this, but I have some advice for anyone considering college. Community college is a great option. I ignored my teachers and guidance counselors who advised against it and I'm glad that I did. I went to a community college for two years and then I transferred to a university where I spent the next two years to get my bachelor's in graphic design. I graduated with half of the debt all of my friends left that school with. I am currently debt free and employed as a graphic designer for a vehicle wrap and lettering company. College doesn't have to be expensive. My degree is worth just as much as the "big shots" who went to Harvard.

This was great! I work in college access and it’s so important for us to advise students on how to use their education after high school to build their future in a way that aligns with their interests and is cost effective. Postsecondary education is a lot of things: college, trade, certifications, etc. There is no one way to be successful. But the amounts of debt students have been saddled with because of how they have been advised, OR operating from a space of emotion and not strategy, is disgraceful. Higher education has just begun (in a large way) focusing on retention in a way that works, but it’s taken time to get here. Hoping we can better advise our students on all options available, inclusive of the military, when it comes to crafting their future endeavors.

I agree with Dave Ramsey on this. I got a 4 year Engineering Degree. It took me 12 years to pay off the loans (including 3.5 years of congressional induced unemployment). School is more expensive now and less useful. I have a friend with hundreds of thousands in debt works as a physicians assistant. He can't afford to pay the interest that is accruing and capitalizing. If you can't get a job that pays 50% of your debt as starting salary, then you can't afford student loans. Go be a plumber or carpenter. Good ones are in high demand here. Baristas with degrees are in low demand.

As an American that lived in the eu before 9/11. I think the eu could use the extra college. It wasn't until I got back to America that a Doctor was able to repair my damaged ear drum. I took flights and trips from Italy to Germany every 6 months just to get proper treatment. Maybe just a bad experience but everytime I've had an issue in America its been taken care of within weeks if not days.

The doctors skills is subjective, the price of medical care however isn't, my friend didn't have access to the cheap medical care any Italian would have and it still costed him a lot less than he would in America. Also medical studies in Europe have the same duration as in American (and probably the rest of the world).

It’s not an arbitrary denial. It sounds like you didn’t have the right type of loans, payment plan, or employer. Master the details and demonstrate that you’ve met the requirements. I am not convinced that this is a scam.

Not everyone wants to be that and not everyone is fit for that. Also with technology advancing some of those jobs will disappear . That is not the future.
The biggest economic problem we have as a country is that most people fall into one of two extreme beliefs:
1. Go to college and get any degree including gender studies and you will be successful.
2. Don’t go to college at all and go into the trades.
Both are wrong. People should go to college because they will be successful IF they pick the right major. If you major in business administration, you will make a lot more than the jobs you mentioned over the course of your career. If you major in gender studies, then you’re just better off not going to college.

I like how Ramsey repeatedly defended the children who took on these debts. How are they supposed to know better when all the people who they are supposed to respect and listen to are giving them the keys to economic failure? I just retired from teaching chemistry at the high school level and I used to tell my students that not every student needs to go to college! It totally went against the push from everyone there, but I didn’t want to see my students disabled with mountains of debt when I knew them better than most people in that building and knew that at THAT point of time in their lives, they were not ready for college (and this was only a few, not all of my students!). Over the past 25 years I saw a huge change in the push for kids to go to college and it really bothered me

I'll tell you where it all went to hell. By the late 80s school admins made a push to focus on sports instead of vocational training. Emphasis on more money then realistic world necessity. I am a software development business owner in the medical industry and refuse to hire college grads. 4 years of beer pong is not the type of talent we are looking for.
I got accepted into a few universities after high school, but in the end decided to go the community college route and transfer to a local university afterwards. At that time, this was what made most sense, financially. My family simply did not have the means to send me to the other universities I wanted to attend. I worked 3 jobs throughout college, paid as I go, and was lucky enough to finish debt free. Didn’t use a dime of my parents money! I may NOT be able to tell people that I graduated from a famous university, but I CAN tell people that I make a decent living and am able to allocate a good portion of my income to savings/personal use, rather than student debt. I know these famous schools may be the more tempting choice, but sometimes you have to consider you/your family’s financial situation and make decisions from there. I know life choices aren’t a always based on money, but just telling my story.

At 18, kids don't have that.

Me and my wife went to community colleges for our first two years then switched to Universities. This cut the cost greatly especially since we lived at home with our parents while attending the community colleges. We both worked summers to help pay for our degrees. She graduated from UCLA and I graduated from USC.

I have a GED, 10 years Navy, now Millwright, making 150k plus.
I was an electrician in the Navy. When I got out in 1985, I was strong and willing to work. I begged, I mean I BEGGED for an entry level trades job. I was told I had to be in a union. So when I talked to the trade unions, they said I had to have a job first. So I finally had to admit my mom was right and I went to my state’s four year land grant university. The first degree was Mechanical Engineering. Tedious and pointless. The second time, accounting. That worked. I also picked up an MBA after I worked about 10 years. I would advise any young person to learn to code and pick up enough accounting classes to sit for the CPA exam. (Yes, I have that certification too.) You can do those things through a community college system but there won’t be any pretty girls there. I’m retiring in 30 months but that’s what it took for me to earn a middle class life- style. God help the young people of our country and I sincerely mean that. Especially if you are a white Christian male.

We took the initiative to pay down our debt during this forbearance. We started with 93K in Jan 2021 and we will be out of debt by March 2022 and bought a house in the middle of it! Best advice I can give you is drive the cheapest (safe) car with wheels you can find. Both of our cars were less than $4,000 total and we bought them this year.

Then they have programs that will pay your degree off if you will sign up for remote areas that are in need of Doctors , engineers teachers and other actual degrees that are in need in rural areas . Just one story… Wife did a second career, went to a PA state school, now a special Ed teacher, did take on debt, paid on loans for about 13 years, and it took close to 2 months of working through the process, but she did get the full $17,500 in forgiveness. We did it all on our own! It helped us tremendously and now we have zero debt other than mortgage - as well as savings, retirement investments, and fully funded emergency fund.
My lenders put me on a 20-year payment schedule to pay off $30k in student loan debt, and paid off my loans in 16 years. It took a lot of discipline, and I "went without" cable TV, cell phones, and a new car for 10 years after graduation in order to pay off $30k in 16 years. I had to make a ton of sacrifices to pay off my loans -- while people in my peer group who racked up over $150k in student loans, have been spending thousands of dollars on vacations, smartphones, smart-watches, cable TV, streaming services, and new cars. Now these irresponsible people think they deserve "student loan forgiveness", just because they had no desire to live on a budget during and after college. What the hell?!!!

I almost dreaded receiving large checks from my lenders, because I “knew” that I was going to have to pay that amount back plus interest, in addition to the amount that went toward my tuition. The only time the extra money helped was when I had expensive auto repair. I never spent my borrowed money extravagantly.

Many colleges are sitting on huge endowments. Let the college loan kids money from their own endowments. Yale could pay every student that attends their university $180k/yr just from the interest on their endowment.
By getting rid of government involvement. The free money universities get inflate the prices.
The schools should have been issuing the loans!
Or give grants. Trump is taxing the unpaid out earnings on endowments. That really pissed them off.
Never had student loans - the Marine Corps paid my tuition - open to anyone that wants to serve. Local trade schools are looking for people and they will pay 100% of your tuition - books - fees if you work for the company for some years afterward. If your degrees ends in the word "Studies" you are not going to get a job that pays more than minimum wage.
I am a university professor and I TOTALLY agree. I will encourage my family to look at the trades and be useful. I also would probably have done it if I had it to do again. Additionally, leaving the propaganda machines pretending to be educational institutions is always a good idea. Unless you are going to university to train for a PROFESSION (which few degrees do), skip it, and get a trade! You'll be happy, you'll be wanted, and you'll be valuable.
So what about Doctors and Nurses? We have to go to college. We do not make a lot of money and student loan debt is astronomical! Most developed nation have free education! Whats wrong with this greedy country? Be a plumber? Be useful. Lol what a slap in the face.

As for cost, that was not part of the argument, but I agree that the system for financing training needs some reimagining. I do take issue with your statement that "most developed nations have free education". First nothing is truly free; and second, many do have a tuition cost.
@@SA-tr5lv I apologize, I misread your initial comment. We do agree on that point. Although there are costs, Im sure that they dont compare to this country. This country should most certainly have free education, at least a 2 year degree. Most of us who seek higher education are set up for financial ruin before we can graduate. We are part of a selfish, capitalist society that claims to be the heroes of the world yet dont want to help one another.
@@Me-tb8rs I agree the costs are high. However, I do not agree that capitalism is the problem. A tool misused does not make the tool bad. Capitalism is not perfect, but it does allow the most opportunity and freedom. I have lived in countries that have been under communist rule. They are a disaster and everyone lives in poverty and ruin. A medical degree there means compelled work for nothing and the work it took to get there yields little. Yea, helping people as a physician or nurse has its rewards, but humans need to see the fruits of their labors. We need to see progress. No other system provides that. PS-communism never works. No one can point to an example that does and when they think they have, a closer look reveals that country to be capitalist ...just with more and higher taxes. A better solution is to fix the great system we have and encourage people to stop looking for handouts. An ideal system will allow all to work for their goals and still see their progress.
Even if you have a major that makes sense, only about half of your classes will even be in that major. Just to get the degree required by that industry, you will be forced to take a bunch of useless "core curriculum" requirements.
Government generally does not make anything cheaper. They just shift the cost to another at a higher price. That in part is why college is so steep.
To decrease the price of college, get the government out of backing student loans for any amount. And don't defer payments till after graduation. Then you'll see demand go way down and the schools will adjust.

Yep if I stopped and though about the cost I would have never went to college. I'm paying on my loans and I am marketable but stuff I could have probably learned cheaper.
But take it from someone who dosent have a collage degree trying to market yourself or even gain experience is MUCH harder. Even many all centers like to have them

@@jessicabixler1658 Jessica it's so hard some times. Some places look for college degrees others don't care. I have a degree in business management and bachelor's in marketing only thing that holds me back now is my health I have MS. If you know anyone with MS you will understand the struggles.
I couldn't afford college so I swung a hammer for 38yrs. I didn't become rich but had a good life, raised a family and led a productive life. You HAVE to live within your means.
If anyone has any amount of Student Loan debt "forgiven", then they should be stripped of their Degree.
Why should they benefit in hiring or higher pay from a Degree they didn't pay for?
So, you're also including individuals that had their parents pay for their education, right? I mean technically they fall under the same category of not paying for their own education.
So people in the military, people from foreign countries with better systems for education, etc. should all be punished right?
Should we also make bankruptcy illegal? Make student loans dischargeable through bankruptcy again and this problem will solve itself. Lenders will be a lot pickier and fewer since they won't have as many propagandized people to exploit.
I know many people that are lifelong college students.
In the late 70's & 80's- all 5 of my kids went to the a trade school for the last 2 yrs of high school!! All of them are STILL working every day. They all own their own homes, and the oldest, at 60 yrs old, is looking forward to retiring in the next couple of years
not everyone is stupid, so some people want higher education than trade school. Medical, science, and engineering students ARE DETERED from getting an education because of the insane prices. Relief would have INCENTIVISED them to get educated, and not waste their talent. Lower education costs = more education opportunity.

There was a time in the 1980's where most businesses would indeed hire anyone who had a 4yr. degree in anything over another applicant without a degree. My thought is this was where the push for college among the masses began. It was after that college costs soared to unbelievable heights.
Absolutely . I put myself through college by working 3 jobs & took out student loans which I paid off. Trade School is a great choice.
I am a female of 60 years. I joined the Navy & served 20 years. I get medical from Naval Medical Center in San Diego CA
