7:13 Just to clarify, Kobe 06 was triple Time Spiral, the time spiral block limited pro tour was the following year and it was the only time they did a two headed giant one, Lachman and van Lunen won it with one of the most amazing meta calls ever in the pro tour forcing slivers. Also I didn't make day 2 on Kobe either and remember the Kobe beef side event very vividly haha.
@ThisIsMyRealName but it wasn't, it was fun for enfranchised players but from a design point it was pretty bad for a normal set. It was a horrible experience for newer players. Don't get me wrong I love the set but saying it was a good design is just inaccurate.
@@helderboymh that is true, but the problem is that for exactly the same reasons it was awful for new players it was awesome for the enfranchised ones.
marcel helder I mean, "Expert" used to be written on packs for a reason: expansions aren't (weren't, at least) designed for new players, Core Sets filled that role. That's how magic became what it is, through complexity and weird mechanics. Nowadays expansions have been watered down, and complexity and new things are relegated to Mythics, so each expansion feels like the same, reskinned thing. I'd love a new Time Spiral block, more cards that have weird effects and side effects, cards that help your opponent as much as you, good cards with good downsides, cards that require actual choices and thinking. But I seriously doubt they'll ever backpedal. Appealing to a larger audience seems more important than having a compelling, enchanting game.
It took an hour of watching this video and required a mention from Luis that he just came second in a pro tour for me to realize that I wasn't watching a Time Spiral Remastered draft. #fml
Trading his akroma morph off with a charge land in play in that last game seemed kind of loose. If he just stalls the game until he can charge up 3 red mana and unmorph it, how does he (realistically) lose?
So glad i checked the Lorwyn set after that remark on it … i can see why he doesn't like it, almost every color has 'almost have to' first pick-able cards in them that have been in every cube on MtgO that i ever watched, he must be pretty sick of those cards by now, so i get why that would effect his liking of Lorwyn. :P … then again, if it was sarcasm, i would recommend working on that intonation a bit ...
i love LSV videos. We'll see one posted of vintage cube when the next flashback / cube draft is put up on MTGO. like srsly tho how long ago was the TSP flashback?
25:20 I'm honestly not convinced Artifact is more complicated than MTG in general, though definitely got to love the opinion that it is not as complicated as Timespiral limited.
It's not just that Riftmarked Knight has a gigantic text box with a ton of stuff going on that doesn't obviously go together. It's not just that its printed version had no reminder text for multiple complex abilities. That monstrosity is an uncommon. What is this block?
petrie911 Flanking, Protection from and Suspend "complex" abilities? They appeared in countless cards in the block. What is this block? An "Expert" set. Not for newbies. Hell, they've printed a textless Cryptic Command, reminder text is just useless.
@@mrknarf4438 Seriously, all three of those are commonly-cited examples of abilities that confuse players, as all three have obvious ways to go wrong. How many people forget that flanking doesn't apply to flanking? What about suspend granting haste? Protection protects my creature from my opponent's spells--but for some reason not wraths. And for some reason it also protects it from *my* spells? But only if they target? What? And you know what's a great way to not get new players? Saying they shouldn't be playing the new expansions. A game that doesn't get new players will die. But hey, at least you got to feel smart, right?
@@petrie911 Yeah, right, since this game had been around and thriving for 13 years when this set came out. Lucky you, nowadays they're taking the complexity away. Sure, you had to remember flanking didn't apply to flanking (or call a judge) when it was an ability that came in that set and was explained on plenty of cards at common rarity. And that Suspend granted haste (or call a judge) when it was an ability that came in that set and was explained on plenty of cards at common rarity. And DEBT for prevention. It made it feel foreign and complex, and I enjoyed it. Nobody had to learn layers in order to play those cards, you only had to remember how they worked. Nobody is required to know those abilities to play magic, but the number of players that still can't understand Protection worries me. Would I rather have a game with less players, but more invested? Any day. (also protecting it from *your* spells was nothing new back in the days, Shroud and Blastoderm didn't confuse anyone. Slivers applied to all other slivers. Effects used to be symmetrical, not just beneficial, creating complexity)
It was one of the most interesting and toughest sets of all time. Playerse now think it is a bad block, but only because they are used to dumbed down magic. This was a block made for smart people.
@@Kryptnyt That's a good comparison. This set was specifically designed to be complex and interactive. But the complexity scared away the less intelligent players. Because of that, wotc changed the whole way they designed sets. They decided to change the game to have less interaction, and less skill needed. Yes, more people play magic now. But that is not necessarily a good thing for the players.
@@gabriels1163 I'm pretty dumb and I always loved the block, all the references to older cards and reuse of old mechanics is perfect for a dummy like me. Favorite to draft right behind Rise of the Eldrazi and Triple New Phyrexia (and maybe some Master's Edition sets)

Aahhhh.... Like Mozart for the ears. By far da best commentary MTG drafter (& player) ever
just like Mozart's Chh-chhchh-chhhh in D minor.
Every time I watch LSV I'm reminded why he is the best
This was fun to hear past stories about cards and events
Time Spiral is one of the most skill intense set ever, so many mechanic !
I loved the casual Tom Goes to the Mayor "Rats off to you" comment
Lsv is busted. id first pick him any day
Time Spiral block had so many cool cards. Magic needs another similar block, one where there's just all kinds of mechanics and weird fun cards.

@@mrknarf4438 My thoughts exactly!
I will never look at Stonecloaker the same way after that blowout.
Hahahaha 3rd pick Mesa. Unbelievable. It was fun seeing chat react to it. Edit: 1:30:09 to hear LSV say "ruhrohraggy".

The Taco Bell 100 point thing was for sure the warriors in the early 2000's. I remember scoring a Chalupa one year!
After your kobe beef did they serve you that fish broth rice pudding for desert?
A Kobe beef prize sounds fantastic.
At 46:30, you could return a plains with tolarian guy to get an extra Pegasus
Sacred Mesa was so bonkers. Back when TSP was standard that was the old UW control finisher

I hope I can play this draft in MTGA one day, maybe the year 2030
15:10 that was card + keldon marauders + dust corona into pack with keldon marauders + dust corona lmao
God, less than 3 minutes into the video and LSV coming right out of the gates with an Eminem reference...gold...
Btw first
Said it back then, and I'm saying it now... Whomever designed Time Spiral block was on an acid trip...

Modern-playable Think Twice, only two years ago, now no one would go near the thing
Who knew this would be relevant in 2021
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? LSV is a fan of Grixus Control?????????
lol subtle coffee plugs
Where does Andy pull these out of?

I actually was really fond of avacyn restored limited, I won so many packs first picking latch seeker it is actually pretty gross.
Could've built such a great Sliver deck
Rest In Peace, Calciderms 🤦🏻♂️
I love eternal I wrote a review on it about my experience of 18 hours
Fucking TIME SPIRAL! anything pre Alara is the prime of MTG IMO.
Would be embarrassing when the top 32 MPL players draws half of LSVs viewer numbers, just saying
Covfefe !
Blood Knight is a color shifted Black Knight, not White Knight. It has Protection from White.
dang i seen this already
Icatian Javalineers was so bad -_-
Arcbound Ravager may be the worst card created far as harm but that doesn't stop me from playing Affinity...
