- Underground punk legends discuss how their first single became an enduring Australian classic.
As part of Ausmusic Month, radio station aired a special hour-long documentary about Melbourne underground rock band GOD, and their iconic song 'My Pal'. This track was their 1987 debut single, written by the band's Joel Silbersher when he was just 15 years old. It has since become a punk rock classic, one of the most enduring songs of the Aussie underground.
Members of GOD would go on to make more seminal music in their careers in bands like The Powder Monkey's, Hoss, Yesmen, Bored! and Tendrils. Hear the full Double J documentary for the story of what happened next.
Such a fucking beast of a song. And all of the parents who supported them tip of hat to you all ..
A wonderful seminal moment in Australian Rock N Roll history. Such a fantastic song.
I wear my GOD 💚 tishirt with so much pride. They changed the dial in the underground scene and their influence is immense and we should be proud of the young bands that followed from them. All we had was GOD and that's all mattered at the time love this it's the best.. time to rock..💚
Excellent story of rock. I really saw these guys as our next link into the future, the way ACDC and Angles led Melbourne's youth in the seventies. Loved their raw honest rock.
I used to record Joel back in the 90s when he was in Sydney touring with Hoss. Some amazing trippy stuff!
I stayed up all night to watch the factory show. Was bliss.
Great doco!! So proud I saw GOD play this song at The Telegraph Hotel back in the 80s.
Love all the bands mentioned and saw all of them except god which was a few years before my time but own the original single with the orange sleeve which I bought for 15 bucks as I was collecting anyhing Hemensley was in
I am very proud of Matthew with out a dout a excellency in drum good at guitar 🎸 ok thanks smile laughing love people love
GOD... the soundtrack of my life... every song was a fucking bewdy.. Matty knows my story.. in my walkman in 1989, duct tape on the play button... I rode the race of my life ... listening to GOD... I got to thank GOD to this day.. performance enhancing drug..😂.. so sad when I tracked Matty down years later to thank him and found out about what transpired. I wrote a letter to one of their mums to ensure she knew how much they were treasured by me. So thanks again GOD. ❤
Oz Rock classic up there with Stranded and Electric Blue.
I traded my copy (yellow cover OG) back to Au Go Go record for the REM 89 Fan Club single. Fair trade .
Yellow copy 2nd press
My Pal, is without doubt, the greatest rock'n'roll song ever written. It makes Stairway to Heaven seem pretencious. It makes Smoke on the Water seem like a Christian sing a long. Its more in touch than Paranoid. Sympathy for the devil exposed for being about the make believe - this song is a bout your mate. Last Night - lite. 7 Nation Army - overblown. Song 2 - meaningless lyrics. More dangerous than God Save the Queen. Obviously most modern American rock sucks as they are posers and it come across in the lyrics.
It ranks a bees proverbial infront of Search & Destroy as it doesnt need swords to makes its point. Likewise Wont be fooled Again, High Voltage and New race are penalised for the impaience of youth of God. Now the song G.O.D. may actually be its equal.
Its is the product of the Killer, Chuck Berry and the naievity of youth.
It leaves itself completely bare in its honesty
Shout out to Rocket Science. hellacopters, Turbonegro, MC5, Tatts, Scientists, Hoss, 6ft Hick, Jimi the Human and Spectre 7 and the Sweet etc. God beat the world with My Pal. How do you top that?
Thanks for the upload.
Awesome song about crack
Your my only friend,
You don’t even like me ,
I’d steal for you.
Such a shame
@@biastv1234 Nah. The kids were 17 years old when they recorded My Pal - 15yr when Tim wrote it. Thoughts of speed & smack were some years from addiction and its final solution. Crack was American. Coke was never available in their circles of Rock'n'Roll depravity. Coke was the demain of Dragon or the Divinyls. Speed however went on to drive their sonic attack on the crowd, only for H being the comedown such was the ferocity to which they lived their lives. This was the price they paid to maintain integrity. They would have already heard the exclamations from the Church as being uncompromising world beaters let along the enduring influence of the Stooges in Australia since the similarly uncompromising Radio Birdman.
I just want to know the first line of the lyrics: to be a .. WHAT?
