This video is about some of the mistakes I've made as an investor over the past 10 years and the advice that I wish someone would have shared with me before I started out. The mistakes include not knowing what a stocks and shares ISA was, not understanding about how important fees and charges were and also why index funds are some of the most powerful tools that an investor can have. Enjoy!

As always a calm voice of reason is what you provide in your content. Keys words… “Plan”, have one for what you are doing and “Time”, understanding that this all takes time. Great content as alway. Thank you
I used to live in the US and I wish someone had told me about index funds back in the days before online brokers. My money could have grown so much in the past 10+ years. I was just too scared and uninformed.
Great advice Toby and I know I am guilty of many of them!!
The longer you play this the more you learn and grow a thick skin too so as not to blindly follow the heard!!
Great video! Appreciate your honesty I’m a new subscriber 😊
Thank you 👍😀
Hi Toby. Please can you help me understand fees better?
I am watching two small cap ETFs available on Freetrade -
1) MSCI USA Small Cap CUS1 - 1 year return 9.18%. TER 0.43%
2) SPDR Russell 2000 US R2SC - 1 year return 4.33%. TER 0.30%
Which is better, CUS1 because it is producing higher returns, or R2SC because it has lower fees? If returns are higher, would this overpower the impact of the higher fees? Thanks.
Hey, never a simple answer here, ultimately it all depends on the long term performance in the future...which nobody knows...presumably you want to hold for the long term?
Yes higher fees (if the funds are the exact same index) will be a bad thing. but in this example the Russell 2000 and USA Small caps are not the same indexes as far as I understand.
Really helpful! Is there much difference between two different s&p500 funds like UBS or VUSA/VUAG? Thanks!
Hey Shrimp, so the difference between VUSA and VUAG is VUSA pays out dividends and VUAG accumulates i.e. reinvests automatically. If my Vanguard platform had VUAG I'd prefer that over VUSA. The UBS one I'm not sure but look out for whether its accumulating or distributing and keep an eye on fees!
@@TobyNewbatt really appreciate the response! Love the vids
Hi, which is the best UK stocks isa? Thanks
Hi Rav, I'll be making a brand new video on this soon probably very early next year but for now maybe try Trading 212 or InvestEngine?
Great info as always
Thank you!
תודה!
Thank you for the support :)
Wish I was 20 years younger. If I knew then…
I know don't we all! Although I'd be too young to do anything ha!
I worked out bonds on their own are a waste of time, all of mine made a loss. However my 60-70 equity fund is my best earner 19% last two years.
What are mistake you'd all like to share to help? Failure is the best teacher
great video, just turned 18 and opened my first Isa
Nice one Miles, you've got a great head start
I made my first million from growing my money through stock trading and I totally know nothing about trading, the grace I had was meeting a good broker from a big shark in the financial market, excited.

Mr Monroe trades my stock and I'm happy you guys are recommending him on here.
@@jasminemccumber4694 My uncle an Indian in the U.S put in 27k with Mr Monroe this year July and he is seeing 750k as for now, he is about getting a million dollar, Im relieved he is humble so I don’t have to worry about his decisions

can you explain how you would be taxed if you sell and withdraw money from ISA re-capital gains tax eg. anything over current limit
Hi Frances, once money enters an ISA anything you sell or withdraw is not liable for any kind of capital gains or dividend taxes. There's no time limit to this which is why it's so important to make the most of them.
Great video, really helpful! ISAs are a life saver
Yes they are!
Better send a couple of fish my way too Toby. Got into ISAs a bit late, never really understood what they were, dabbled with IG index a bit too much.... ouch! And I still can’t break the habit of trying to time the market every now and then. Great video by the way. Hope you had a good holiday my friend.
Sounds similar to me mate, IG was where I messed around as well. Oh well live and learn! Thanks back to the grind making those videos :)
Great content. I was fortunate enough to not make most of those mistakes by reading a lot about investing and watching this type of videos. I essentially learned from other people's mistakes ;) Thanks for the videos, it helps to keep on track 🙏🏿
Happy to help thanks again!
brilliant thanks toby, nice to see you back. I have one BIG issue always trying to time the market just cont stop it lol, even when company's are at fair value i still try it on ;)
Human nature I guess we have to try 😀😂
I had a buy order filled for BTC today at just over £15k, wasn't expecting it to hit that price unless the £ suddenly recovered. So that might be a confessional mistake in the future! Could be worse, glad I wasn't holding a bag of FTX token.
Crazy time with everything going on in the crypto market right now!
Hi Toby, another thought provoking video, nice😂. I wasn’t too worried about paying tax on dividends etc but now I’ve realised I will be next paying it prob in the next 18 months. What is the best free easy to use platform where I can pick my own stocks etc as I just have a GIA on freetrade at present. Thanks again for the wet fish alert👍
Maybe try somewhere like Trading 212? You can buy stocks and ETFs and open an ISA for free, check out my link too and get a free share to get you started
My first account is a general stock and shares one on a platform with heafty transactional fees 🙈
Snap! 😂👌
Nope, I went straight to UA-cam for guidance from some decent and knowledgeable people before starting investing. So…😀Hello Vanguard and Investengine
nice!
