  • We played against Trowbridge Cricket Club, in the West of England Premier League (Wiltshire). This was a really tough match and one that I would prefer not to post. Probably my worst innings on the channel.

Think you gotta to remember that sweep shot mate against the spinner. You worked on it in India, playing it well. Doesn’t have to be full blooded. Just rotate with it. Especially if he’s pitching it 4/5th stump

Generally don’t like to give advice on these channels, but as someone who has been there and felt like everything was going against them for an extended period when trying to bat week to week, I can empathise with your current situation.
I’m a fairly similar stature to you (albeit more portly these days), but one thing that really got me going early (every batsman’s most vulnerable time) was to get my feet moving before the ball was bowled. I take guard ahead of where I intend to stand before the bowler begins their runup, and then take step back as the bowler begins their runup. It is a type of trigger movement, but its sole intention is to get the feet moving to enable any head movement towards the ball.
This will help in getting towards those offside balls a little better as your feet don’t feel like lead as they can for a taller batsman.
One other piece of advice for training. When you hit the nets next, pick 3 areas you want to hit the ball (generally where gaps will be in the field 90% of the time) and focus on getting your head to the ball and using your hands/wrists to manipulate the ball into these zones. At the moment, it’s easy to tell you’re reacting to the balls bowled to you without a plan for how to get off strike. This is especially important against the spinners.
Don’t mind if you take or leave the advice, but if you’d like to talk more about it, more than happy to help as I do know what you’re going through. It’ll pass, and you very likely will fail some more before it gets better.

Gareth, don't feel too bad, take heart that it was the best start you've had to an innings at Marshfield. You came in with intent and played with positivity. Even the dot balls had more intention behind them. After that it's clear you struggled with pace off the ball, it meant you had to force the issue from a place of low confidence. But go back and watch the first 10 minutes of your innings, it looked to me like you turned the corner. Just my two cents, might be wrong, just how it looked to me. I'd see it as a small victory on your way back to form because your starts have been the issue lately.

And Jeremy's advice was really good, he's clearly a man who knows the game very well. I'd turn to him more over the next few weeks, the way he approaches his cricket is just what you need right now. The runs will come.

This video was actually a must watch!
    - your intent from the start was really good
    - like others pointed, dot balls had more confidence in them trying to look for runs and rotate the strike
    - its the mindset at the end of the day and you went in with a mindset to score
    - players who face 40-50 balls, now need to anchor and play all the way
    - your captain is amazing who provided support and guidance
    - some pointed the sweep which you worked on in India, and tons of coaches out here lol personally when the ball is staying low, sweep gets risky and so does going on backfoot so on pitches like these, I always play front foot
    - every game is a learning curve, and we all go through these kind of patches, Its great to see your team mates being supportive. We have watched you play amazing innings, and I am sure Gareth, the runs are around the corner, continue to be positive!

this video is actually really interesting to watch. obviously this is all speculation from a random on yt but the way you played in the first 10 or so balls was like your head was completely clear and you had great intent. then all of a sudden you faced a few dots in a row and it feels like you got in your own head. your shots felt more desperate or however you'd describe it, like you lost trust in your own game. basically as you described it at the end.
important to remember with that though is that it means you're not actually far off where you need to be. you showed yourself you can bat beautifully even in this game. you've probably already had another match by now but you're actually so close to having a big innings i reckon if you can just get your head clear. it certainly wasn't your best innings overall but at least from my perspective it seems mostly mental and it's not a long way you have to go to be clicking and scoring bulk runs.
keep it up bro! you're gonna smash it soon ✊

Don’t worry Gareth, as someone who plays for the Hampshire pathway this is a completely normal situation. That was one heck of a spell by the spinner. All you can do now is keep positive, you batted well to steady the innings and stop the flow of wickets. Take all the positives out of that game (e.g that intent from the start was world class). Keep your head up mate and go again next week.

Your the man Gareth! I found myself in a very similar sitaution at the very start of the Aussie summer in October 2023. Opened the batting, hit the first 2 balls of the innings for 2x gloriously played cover drive 4's and then struggled hard. About 11 overs later, dismissed for 15. I thought cricket was a game I loved like no other (just like you love it), which turned to hate very quickly. 7 days later, came out to open the batting and go again. Started with 12 dot balls but guess what, finished with 103 not out off 84 balls 😅 21x 4's and 0x Sixes 😂

Hey mate, sorry that you felt so under pressure. Good old left arm orthodox spin plus misreading the pitch a little bit, then feeling under pressure to score quickly, it all culminated in you losing your head a bit while wickets were falling and maybe, feeling like you were the cause. Sucks when you’re out there, but I know you can work your way past it. Might sound weird, but even the way you edited the dot balls together where they run so fast, kind of reflects the panic a bit. The keeper was hitting all the right buttons with the chat too, bet that made it worse.
Remember your advice from a few weeks ago, you’ll get it together. It might help you to just inhabit the crease, forget about the runs, and concentrate on just playing the ball coming at you.
This was a great video anyway, you’re letting us see inside and it’s very compelling viewing. Good luck next match mate!

Good to see you bat with intent at the start. That spinner was just bowling stump to stump or outside off with a packed off side field. Very unlucky for you not to find the gaps when you played an attacking shot. But with all the practice you did in India on the sweep I would definitely love to see you backing yourself to hit the sweep hard every time, would love to see it more often.

Don't overthink it when you are out there - the best way to get out of a spell of poor form is to play out of it. Instead of getting anxious about not scoring quickly, tough it out and the runs will come. I think you're getting so annoyed with yourself that you are over-thinking it. In this situation where the team are struggling and wickets falling, you have the perfect excuse to anchor the innings and take your time, instead of fretting about where the next run is coming from. Time at the crease is what you need. I opened for 35 years for my teams and that's what I always did when my form wasn't great - bat your way out of it.

I’m aware there’s a lot of coaches in UA-cam comments but even so - You have to be more decisive about either coming down the pitch, or going right back, against the slow bowlers - not with a view to hitting boundaries, but just to help you find those singles that will reduce the pressure, and also make them change their lines and lengths.

I'm an X A grade opener, my advice is if you are not picking up the ball too well it's rather a concentration thing or a confidence thing.
I used to get outside a tap a golf ball backwards & forwards.
Seems silly, but Batting is mostly hand eye coordination.
Drill a small hole in a golf ball, find somewhere, maybe a clothesline and hang it knee height grab a wicket and tap it back and forth as much as you can in your spare time.
    See if it helps.

You started off really well and that spinner got into your head. My advice: go down into the 2nds (volunteer, don't wait to be dropped) and get your confidence back. We've all been there - at least I have - and all you need is to get some runs and feel the ball hitting the middle of your bat. The standard of play of the opposition is not quite so relevant as getting some time in the middle, getting some runs and getting your confidence back.
    Good luck.

Everyone’s different with technique and you ultimately have to do what feels right for you.
Personally I feel your backlift is too low and too late, which I feel is highlighted when you aren’t quite seeing it right.
When the balls coming onto the bat you tend to find it easier or when you have the time to lift the bat up before playing a shot to a slower bowler.
Waiting with the bat up a bit higher, cuts down the amount of pressure movement needed before playing your shot. It should then help you get to the ball that bit earlier and where your shots are being hit hard but going straight down into the ground and struggling to beat the infield, it will kiss off the surface and beat the infield easier.
It should also ease the tensing and allow you to focus on what you do well when in form which is play cleanly through the line. I think part of the tensing and playing across line is because you feel you are late on the shot and trying to catch up/hit harder.
    Love watching the content though!

@@canyoucricket hey Gareth. I’ve been exactly where you are. My advice, get 2 hours with a coach or a mate in a net and just get them to give you throw downs. Just try and sweep every ball, every single one whatever the length. Slog sweeps lap sweeps, square sweeps, etc. it will just then start coming naturally in the game. The sweep can be you pressure release shot for ones, but also a boundary shot.

Seems like the spinner had a few of the batters in a spin mate so don't worry. Also, do you think the bounce was consistent? Looked very up and down at the pitches. Look at the positives, you were able to spend some time out in the middle and made a good start. Its not easy when wickets start falling at the other end.

Simple brother - come back stronger next time and go on the offensive - the only way to get out of a rut is to put pressure on the opposition from ball 1 - speak to your skipper about all out attack and how he does it - you’ll be fine brother - you’re a class player, just back yourself and don’t lose confidence in the middle - keep telling yourself that you won’t get out to anyone! Best of luck Gareth bro!!

Tough innings to watch mate. Put the cut away against the left armer. You are playing against the angle, and its not the right shot. There is nothing wrong with going back, but do it to turn the ball down leg or else play it straighter and don't force it, or as your skipper told you, ~6-12 inch dance out of the crease to throw him off his length. That type of bowler wants to hurry you, and make you feel pressure when there is none - do the Steve Smith and walk away, refocus in, and then play it on your time. Wait for him to tire of patient bowling searching for a wicket (which he did a few times). Set batsmen really needs to absorb bowling like that. Keep at it, and stay patient.

It's definitely easier said than done, but don't over hit the ball when in you are in a bad spot. Just try and return to your usual ball by ball routine.

Got to give credit to the opposition too. No else on your side was scoring freely and as your first partner said lots of time. Some times occupation is as good as scoring heavily. It does put pressure on other but so does continuously losing witckets. As the skip said keep playing in the v, and as one of your viewer said remember your swipe shot.

Cricket is a simple game Gareth, the team who scores more runs, wins. If your mindset will be too score runs you will automatically get into good positions, when we think of just surviving we forget to watch the ball carefully, get back to basics. Watch the ball, see the gaps in the field and back your instincts. When we are batting well, our mind is always at the bowler’s end and when we are struggling all we think about is the end from we are standing and how bad things are and how we are just hitting shots straight to fielders. Get into the frame of kind of scoring runs, and avoid overthinking.

Things happen, and will happen again. The top Pro players have form slumps, and battle mental demons, even with all their experience.
The spinner darting the ball in. That exposed a weakness in your technique, be it your physical or mental set up. Some times it's as simple as changing guard, or opening up your stance a little for that situation. As for the mental demons, that's a different story. That's just trusting yourself, and having good team mates to talk it through with you after the game, to let you know they have your back, as it's a team. You're not letting them down, you're just in a tough spot. They, and you know, you'll bounce back, and, you'll have their back when they are in the same situation. That's the beauty of a Team game.
What worries you about the spinner firing the ball in like that? What can you do to address it? Then make a plan, and work on it. You've done this before, and can do it again. Being challenged can seem disheartening, embarrassing even, but it's the Best part of the journey when the day comes that you're looking back at it all.
