  • Elon Musk has fired pretty much their entire charging staff as the company no longer sees charging as a viable business model. With NACS rolling out across the industry what does this mean for the EV space? I give some of my thoughts on the subject
Maybe they should have fired the FSD Team?

EVs are still a relatively new technology and the need to build more charging stations was one of the two primary weak links. The other weak link that has been slowing all EV sales has been Musk himself. Musk is egotistical and erratic, and his politics are abhorrent and alienating to most of his customers. My thought is that Musk is tired of EVs and wants to move on to AI or some other new, flashy thing. Musk’s push for his 50 billion payout seems to be to gut the Tesla cash cow and use that money to pay for his new AI toys. Regardless, Musk’s cutting of his supercharger division, on top of his dropping plans for an affordable EV, are the biggest blow yet to Teslas, EVs and more broadly, green energy. Who is going to buy a Tesla after this? And will any manufacturers cooperate with Tesla or Musk ever again?

The fact that TSLA goes up when these irrational moves are made is mind boggling, the stock has no logic. They are literally gutting the company of future development and progress.

@@TheTschumist range is "totally fine" depending on your use case. Battery range is reduced by about 30% in the cold. Battery recycling just needs water? I think there's a bit more to it than that. Battery recycling is currently not profitable, therefore not easy. It's cheaper to mine the lithium than to get it through recycling. Mining is not easy and it's still easier than recycling. Why did you sell your Tesla? Did you get an ICE car?

    • @asharak84
      @asharak84 5 місяців тому

@@Christian-fx9ur it's cheaper to recycle NCA than source raw materials - but there is insufficient supply of used batteries as they remain valuable as batteries well after the car which is maknig it harder for recyclers to justify building out much. For LFP the raw materials cost enough less that it's slightly more expensive to recycle than source fresh so that is a challenge - most of the world will probably deal with this through taxation making recycling the better option as that's an overall win for the country.
Range is fine for almost all use cases - price is less so (though that is true of almost all new cars).
Cold is only an issue if you're in the seriously cold - if it's not significantly below 0 you'll be looking at a small range hit that you will barely notice. Unless you're only driving a couple of miles, in which case heating the cabin will eat a lot but then you're driving so little distance that range doesn't matter.
Resale looks comparable to ICE here - I wish they fell of a cliff in value, then I'd be able to pick one up cheap. Sadly, it's not true.

plus he'll likely licence out the tech (hardware and software). they already done this with BP. i.e. others pay for the up front cost but tesla still gets profit without the long term capital investment.

But you don't actually say this nor do you justify it. Based on just the information you provide int he first few minutes, Tesla could be getting out of the super charger business or it could be refreshing the team for a massive expansion, nobody can know based solely on a team being fired. Then speculating on that seems doomed to failure. What does Tesla say its plans are?

Why is it that most things to do with EVs and charging in America seem to be so complicated. Here in Europe almost all Superchargers are open to all EVs - why do Tesla in the States go through the nonsense of opening them up brand by brand? Nuts. Again, here in Europe, Ionity are opening charging hubs left, right and centre as are other charging companies. Tesla, is one amongst many, albiet a very important one. I think Musk is more concerned with being a right-wing conspiracy nut than being an effective manager. He's wrecked Twitter. Looks like it's Tesla's turn.

Great video but as a European EV owner, I am slightly confused with American's obsession with Tesla. Here, Tesla's are a minority of EVs. Because of ever increasing EV choice from other car manufacturers, Tesla percentage of EV's is only shrinking. Why would car manufacturers switch to Tesla chargers whereas (here at least) the standard Type 2 connector charging network is increasing, while with Tesla news the Tesla charging network won't be increasing?
Perhaps its different in the USA, but here most EV sales are other brands now, and the % of Teslas as a percentage of all EV will continue to fall.

I visit EU pretty often and I have to agree. I think it’s because of lack of choice in USA/Canada with EVs. Its Tesla or a few other pickings. The charging network is still fragmented, there is no set in stone charging standard and this insane tribalism with ICE vs EV.

do you realize standard type 2 is too slow to charge? maybe people in EU dont drive that much, but Tesla charger is just better. I dont own an EV and never plan to buy one simply the cost to maintain one is not clear yet, I will wait for another 10 year to see the true ownership cost. for now EV just cost way too much to insure, I am talking about 1k more every 6 month, that is 2k every year, 20k in 10 years, compare to a Toyoda hybrid, which cost 1/3 to insure, EV seems like a money pit to me. not to mention I don't even know if a EV can last 10 years, for toyota, I am pretty sure they last for at least 10 years.

Charging was the key driver for sales especially when FSD was a red herring (V12 beta now ?). If they not confident in charging then what seperates them from the rest until charging is 5 minutes task. Is this the begining of the end for tesla growth with stale old designs and rediculous cybertruck with no sales. This is the USA and hire and fire is a usual choice. Here it does not happen, but it might make a lot of sense for Tesla due to stalling sales to reduce the costs now and rehire a few of those key figures later cause at the end how much profits are they making in this division ?
Too less compared to the vehicle sales and maybe they are about to split the whole supercharger division off with far less people on board where then Ford and GM will buy parts of that. The price for 30% of the supercharger network with just 20% on board for maintenance and expansion of current facilities is a lot higher with the whole big team they had on board for years.
Just a hard cut to hire the best again and rebuild the team to sell it afterwards.
Makes sense considering that the turnover is far lower than that of their core business while it also needs a huge amount of capital and also maintenance costs.
I would not worry about that cause they will find a new level and might reduce the speed of new spots and new chargers also replacing older chargers.
Makes no sense if the growth is no longer there. Elon knows his sales figures and the production capacity. Now he reaches the real car manufacturer hell when the demand is stalling and another price drop brings not enough new orders to compensate and keep the factory running. Here in Berlin he could not fire the employees like in the USA.
Far more complicated, the only way out are those workers that have a limited contract for 2 years which means he is able to not renew these contracts. But that takes months or years till someone has left the payroll. I bet sales outlook is terrible while the Cybertruck is not doing well regarding production volume and quality.
At the end the model 3 highland is not gaining enough orders due to far more competition here, many chinese attacking tesla and others learning their lessons too.

The biggest problem for fast-charging in the future is that the increase in peak load isn't sustainable yet putting more of them out will become increasingly important for road trips as the number of EVs out there increases. Elon either went crazy or realized there is an imminent scaling issue and grossly over-reacted to it as usual. EV sustainability and scalability requires giving everyone access to L2 charging wherever they park so the grid can dump excess renewable energy directly into them instead of having to build massive storage facilities and insert all of the additional losses that entails. How do you sustain sprawling fast-charging infrastructure when very few people actually use it between holidays?
