It was supposed to be opposed not "turn around" the correct translation.
He meant it for the taxi driver to turn around, 反対(側) which also pronounced as "han-tai (gawa)" with the meaning [opposite] but japanese usually omit certain words like the 側 [direction] during informal situation, and the same word can also used in the context of judgement/decision which carry the same meaning of you described as opposing.
Probably it was the script writer's idea of a little word play :)
