20 years of scrap: The waste left behind by US troops in Afghanistan • FRANCE 24 English

- After two decades, the last US troops in Afghanistan are set to leave the country by September 11 this year. But as they depart, they are also leaving behind tonnes of destroyed equipment, ranging from computer keyboards to boots. At the vast Bagram air base, this has sparked a boom in business for scrap merchants looking to sell on anything valuable. But it has also left many angry that the equipment was not put to better use in a country still reeling from years of warfare.
Somebodys junk is another mans treasure, always been that way and will stay that way.
There`s already a perfectly fine torch hose in the first second of the video laying on the dirt 😂

To me the biggest indictment is that we were there for 20 years, spent trillions of dollars, and hundreds of thousands of lives were lost on all sides and yet the Afghans felt that there was nothing worth fighting for and were comfortable with letting the Taliban take over again. What did, or didn't, we do there that after 20 years and trillions of dollars the locals just shrug their shoulders and figure their odds with the Taliban being in charge as just as good as with us? The fact that Afghans are willing to let the Taliban walk back in and take over tells you everything you need to know about our mission there and our complete and utter failure on all levels to really connect with the locals and make them feel like this Afghanistan was something worth saving and fighting for. The Afghans were failed, the American people were failed, the citizens of all the other countries who participated in this war were failed, and the honor and memories of the people who died in the war and who died on September 11 were failed. The fact that their deaths were used as justification for this complete failure of a war is even more disappointing.
I'm angry, frustrated, and disappointed that after all the time and money spent and blood spilled that we failed to really improve the lives of Afghans and failed to give them hope of a better future. What a waste.
Run, Run, Forest, Run!
Some say waste to the Afghanistan's that's a gold mine. 🤯🤯
How come The United States gets all the blame, there were how many allies contributing to the effort?
No proper turn over? That's real American mindset, your own your own thank u Afgha. 😅😅
20 years and they still need us to hold hands..
Those are broken pieces of old or obsolete equipment.......even if they are still in one piece and usable but would still be obsolete for a world power like the USA. It would cost more to bring them back and then dispose of them in landfills......everything in those piles has an expiration date and more than likely they have expired or pending expiration....
The US economy is driven by consumption and 2/3 of the GDP is from consumption, and thus the US military is no different. Those pieces of equipment have been "consumed" and served their purposes and it is time for the local folks to extract whatever is left from them from the perspective of a third-world country....Had the US military burned them it would create air pollution and cost fuel...better just leave them...
We have seen this after WWII, Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan......nothing new folks....
This is another Vietnam for USA
They didn't leave anything good for the people of Afghanistan. This has set a perfect example for the rest of the world to never let allied forces inside their home.
20 years of gold for the new tenants!!
Honestly that place would be awesome to explore. So much stuff left behind. Too bad the US destroyed and broke a lot of the valuables.
They're stuck in the 7th century...they have no need for technology unless its for building IEDs or exporting terrorism.
This I should call "waste of incompetent arrogance". Unable to deliver the goods, only deliver the bads.
Sorry for the mess, we'll send nukes next time.
This type of waste is happening here in America too. The military throws away brand new things, from school supplies to office equipment. Seen it with my own eyes, what that man said about the military destroying things instead of donating it to them is so true. Like I mentioned the military will not donate anything they don’t need, or use and just dump it. It’s so sad and wasteful.
Happens in schools, hotels, grocery stores, offices too. It's a throw away economy.
Looks like most of Detroit, Michigan.

Americans did not take any chance, if left to local government the equipment would have definitely fallen in the hands of taliban

Old story. At the end of WW2, my father was in the navy and on the final voyage home, they threw everything overboard, including brand new equipment literally by the ton. They fired every round of ammo for fun. The war contracts specifically stated that nothing would return home. All the ship had was enough food and water to make it back. It was empty otherwise. Very little made it back as war surplus across all branches.
Meanwhile Europe and Soviet Union were starving
@@Martina-Kosicanka Western Europe was getting assistance. We'd also had provided the Soviets with a lot of equipment including ships. How did they repay us when they returned it to us? BY destroying everything, sabotaging equipment. Soviets deserved everything they got.

"Every day here in Leningrad brings me closer to suicide. In fact, I have no way out. Hunger. Terrible hunger. Again no news about the evacuation. ......
Mother and Ira are there. I can't take a piece of bread away from them. I can't because I know what a crumb of bread means today. ....My mother told me yesterday with tears in her eyes that she wished I would choke on the 10-15 gram piece of bread that I stole from her and Ira. What a terrible hunger!
I feel I know if someone had offered me a deadly poison so that I could die without agony, I would take it. I want to live, but I can't live like this! But I want to live! What should I do? I've lost my honour and the belief in its existence. Two days ago I was sent to get sweets. Instead of sweets, I bought cocoa with sugar (I knew that Ira wouldn't eat it, then my portion would be bigger). I made up a story about three bars of cocoa being torn out of my hand, I played a comedy at home with tears, gave my mother my word of honor as a pioneer that I would not have taken a bar ...
And then, looking with my hard heart at my mother's tears and her grief because she was left without sweets for Ira, I secretly ate cocoa.
Coming home from the bakery today, I took a piece of bread weighing about 25 grams from Mother's and Ira's portion and secretly ate it.
I fell into the abyss marked by indiscipline, unscrupulousness, dishonor and shame. I am an unworthy son of my mother and a dishonorable brother of my sister. I am an egoist, a person who forgets all his close ones in a difficult hour. And I do this at a time when mother is completely exhausted. With her swollen feet, with her sick heart in light shoes in the frost, without having eaten a crumb of bread, she visits the authorities, makes miserable efforts because she wants to take us away from Leningrad.
I have lost all faith in the evacuation. It's over for me. Only food is my world now. What lies ahead of me is not a life. I only want two things: I want to die myself, and my mother should read this diary after I die. May she curse me, a filthy, callous and hypocritical animal, she may cast me out, I have fallen so deep, so deep ...
What's next? Will I be spared death? But I wish for a quick and gentle death, not a starvation that stands before me like a bloody ghost. It's that sad, I'm ashamed, can't look at Ira ... Will I kill myself? Eat! I want to eat!
