Hi dan , I am Henk from Holland. I admire your stake to undertake a project like this all by yourself. It will be A great reward when you can say: It's finished. ( after 24 months) but now I like to give you some advice, which you probably did not think about; You removed the water tanks on the roof. I will strongly recommend to re-install new ones from at least 1250 liters as a backup for a Sprinkler system. This Chateau is so far out from any village or fire station that having a sprinkler system will save a lot of damage in case of an emergency. Better safe than sorry, since right now, the holes from the central heating are already in, so there you can install the pipes for the sprinkler system.
Other than that, I wish you all the luck and I love the content and watching the progress.

If I had a vote I'd say get a yurt. I lived in one with my two little children and have very happy memories of that time. They're easy to live in, keep clean, heat with a log burner etc. Plus you could rent it out for glamping later on, or house a volunteer etc.

Initially I thought that the only thing keeping the chateau from falling down was all the spiders holding hands BUT now you can clearly see that it wants to be saved. Reminds me of those videos of people saving abandonned dogs, in the beginning they run from you, they seem aggressive and frightened but once given a bath and food they turn into cuddly forever pets. I hope that I live long enough to see the 'lightswitch, wallpaper and paint' stage ! xoxoxo

Oh I know you can do it. I bought 7 acres about seven years ago. It was nothing but a field with a sprinkling of trees here and there no water no electricity. I was well into my late 50s and at the time doing everything on my own. But not having a home out here did not stop me from doing what I wanted. I too stayed in a tent for a bit and then I bought a camper for $1000. I cooked on a camp stove and hold my water in for my daughters home in the neighboring town 30 miles away. And over. Time I had a well put in and Electric and I was well on my way to making my bit of earth my own paradise. And now with the help of a very good guy friend of mine I built a 750 ft.² home. Small yes but it looks much larger inside than anyone would give her credit for. It’s on a pier and beam system and it suits Me just fine. I don’t owe any money to the bank. If I don’t have the cash then I don’t buy it. It’s taking a little longer but at least I don’t have a monkey on my back. Good job and what you’re doing and it totally makes sense only take down what you need only work in your particular area and perfect it before you move onto something else otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy.

Dan the best option would be a secondhand caravan with awning looking forwards to the winter, you and the boys would have somewhere warm and dry and a kitchen/shower etc, as we've all seen French winters can be harsh theres no shower or kitchen in a tent for practicalities far better to buy a caravan with everything in than having to run around getting it all ... make life easier for you and a time saver.
Least after a hard day's graft in crap weather youd be organised, warm, safe and comfy. A tent is OK for a while in warm weather but in the rain and and cold not so good (we're seasoned campers) a good tip is to build a skirt around the bottom of the caravan as cold rises up under the van also one with a fixed bed so lounge and sleeping are in place.
Your progress is outstanding onwards and upwards fella!. 😊

Hi Dan! Beautiful work... along with your daily subtle humor 😂 I was thinking... hey; that was your NEW wheelbarrow... about 6 weeks ago! 😂
My humble advice is that you don’t look at things in terms of getting accommodations for yourself in nine days, but rather; what will you need to comfortably live in this winter? Do that... make that how you think about what you will need in desperate times.
Lots of love and respect Dan! You are worthy!

Why haven't you started using your Well? You should have beautiful clear running water from your Well. All it should need is a new pump (If it was an external jet pump. Or a new control box if it is an in-line water pump. Cut the pipe to the house and put a threated hose adapter. Attach the hose and enjoy your water. Should be less then $200 fix and be working in 1 day. Your doing a great job; keep it up!!

My vote is for a caravan. The boys will love it and you'll have a safe, dry place to sleep. If the solar panels are still up, electricity is solved. The only issue is water and septic. Once you can move into the chateau the caravan can be used for a volunteer. Can't wait for that. Also, I just noticed you have the same amount of viewers as Stephanie. Good for you.

Since there are no outbuildings on the property, Dan will eventually need outdoor storage. He'll also need his sewer and septic routes decided before he can complete his walls and floors. So, if it were me, I would bury a septic tank now, and put up a largeish 10 x 12 wooden prefab garden shed with a window or two, as a bunkhouse. Add a smaller tin one adjacent for kitchen and bathroom functions . Get one of those big square water totes in a cage to have a significant clean water supply trucked in and use the solar panels to power a pump into the tin shed. Add a propane tank, portable AC, and he's comfortably housed for the rest of the summer. When fall comes, he can take a day to insulate the bunkhouse and add heat. Once all the restoration is done, he's got a building for his gardening tools and machinery, and the tin shed to store the fuel for them and to act as the hub for a garden watering system. While plumbing the building he can divert grey-water for collection in the big tote, and black water to the septic tank if building codes in France allow grey-water usage.

Another you tube channel Tyler and Todd are living in one while building their container home. You could just camp for now in summer, put a tent on a platform. I bet the boys would love it. There is the caravan option as well.

Before you begin building back, it will save you money on mistakes by getting an architect to layout the plan. They will also plan the engineering, electrical, plumbing, etc. bits and pieces. There's so much that needs planning before building. Easier and cheaper to erase than tear apart and start over.
