I remember as a 13 year old kid on Long Island waiting for this album to drop. It was supposed to come out on 9/11/2001 and I had saved up money to go to Tower Records, but all plans were cancelled that day. IIRC Hot 97 in NYC was playing this single that summer. I had memorized the lyrics and was completely obsessed. The verses and of course the hook are incredible on this early Kanye West production. This track was all over the radio that summer, it's hard to describe how huge this track was.

The scene he is setting is terrible. People outside selling their moms sofa, a person's dreams of basketball and making it out GONE.
