Well this is crazy! I just stumbled upon your video. The red thing amongst all the spare parts in the trunk is used between the coils of the rear springs to raise the suspension. As soon as you showed the maintenance record, I knew my suspicions were right. That is my Dad's writing and yes, he kept meticulous records! The oil pressure readings at idle and higher rpm. The spare parts neatly organized. He was extremely particular about upkeep on his vehicles and did all the work himself. All of the interior vinyl received regular protectant. I do know the car was sold locally, (Grand Rapids, MI) and may have been sold one more time? I hope you enjoy the car! He would be happy that someone like you ended up with it. Best wishes...

That car is the same age as me! I like the wheels! I like how it's all completely factory, down to the radio! The miles are still really low for a 35 year old car! I just love that 2.8 starter sound! Brings back so many memories since my parents had an S10 Blazer and Cutlass Ciera with that engine. The price may be a little high, but if you can afford it and you love it, that's what matters!

Great job on this! I has the same car, same color back in the day, bought new! This brought back old memories of my younger adult years! I really liked that car (Had the EGR replaced under warrenty several times) but really didn't like the wheels. I painted the "inside" parts with that same blue spray paint, haha! Made them look a little different and not as odd. That blue font instrument cluster is what really brought back the feeling of driving this car. Back when this was new, it was a fairly decent car and a lot of bang for the buck, considering almost every other car this size had a 100 horsepower or less four cylinder engine. The exhaust sound of this car was one of its trademarks - it sounded awesome, and made it sound much faster than it really was! Thanks for posting - it's great to see a common car such as this in such good condition, and being appreciated for what it was. 👍👍

My favorite part about 80s and early 90s cars if you can get good cars with good engines still and yet they are old enough that they are pretty easy to work on. The first car I ever learned to really work on was a 1993 Chevy Lumina Euro with the 3.1 which was an evolution of the 2.8. That engine was great. Extremely reliable. In the end I ended up rebuilding it with new rods shafts and performance cam as well as hydraulic rockers. I bored it and stroked it to 3.3L and even built a small custom turbo system using the Garret T28 turbo and piping I did myself because no one made a kit for a Lumina lol. So much learning on that car. Was a ton of fun. I was lucky to have had a LOT of experienced mechanics around willing to help me and of course my trusty Chilton’s manual lol.

they really werent that bad. the interiors werent great but they were mechanically simplistic, you could keep them going for a long time because they were easy to work on and the parts were cheap. i had a 91 2.2 that i bought for $2,200 drove it for 7 years and sold it for $400. i put 100K myself on that car, when i got rid of it the odometer quit working it was over 200K. it had a 2.2 TBI, i had to do a head gasket. a few hours of work and $150 worth of parts and it was rolling down the road again.
if they were still readily available today rust free, i would still buy one. they cost almost nothing to operate. almost everything today is overpriced, over-engineered nonsense.

Those 2.8's only had 120 horse power but the throttle response was just amazing. That coupled with the fact that the curb weight on these cars is light they really scoot! So fun to drive. I never had any engine problems at all. And, even though I never changed the tranny fluid--shame on me--I never had any problems with it. I was very religious about oil and filter changes, though. Every 3,000 miles. Slick 50 once. Never had a check engine light. It had 223,000 miles on it when I sold it. Still ran excellent. Sad face. Thanks for the vid and memories.

Amazing find. LOTS of great memories watching you go through that. I shared an '88 Z24 with my brother in the mid-90s. Wouldn't have been able to afford it, but my parents had an antique shop and helped the owner of the local Chevy dealer replace some furniture at a big discount after a terrible house fire. He knew we just turned driving age and returned the favor by offering the Z24 at a price we couldn't refuse. Pretty special to have as our first car. Practical but sporty enough - the burble of the exhaust , slightly stiffer springs, and subtle interior and body upgrades really went a long way compared to the stock Cavalier, and it was very reliable compared to the family's '78 G20 van and '82 Camaro. After a few years my brother took over ownership and unfortunately didn't take good care of it, but it still went 180k miles on the original engine and trans (the Camaro was on its third engine by then). I wound up hooked on getting the "performance" trim of otherwise boring cars (Volvo 240 Turbo, Sentra SE-R, Fiat 500 Abarth, etc), but the Z24 started it all, and if I'd seen that one for $3k I'd have likely bought it without even thinking. A really great car for the time.

Crazy story! My dad had a Cavalier Z24 back in the late 80s when he lived in Long Beach California. His had the digital cluster and he was on the 405 or 110 freeway (don’t remember which one) and wanted to see if it will read over 100 mph which it did. He was literally blowing everybody’s doors off until he merged over a lane to his right and made the lightest contact on the rear passenger corner with another vehicle so basically a pit maneuver which sent him doing 360s in the middle of the highway. He was gripping the shifter so hard that it literally bent 45 degrees to the left! It was in neutral but because the shifter was so bent, he had to pull over and unbend the shifter so it can shift back into drive as it was stuck!

Dang that Cavalier looks great, I would love to own that.
Your video has got me to start looking for one. I had an 85 4door LS and in 1987 drove from Tennessee to Daytona Beach with 5 people and all our luggage, of course I had to install a luggage rack on the trunk, but it handled the trip with no issues. It only had a 2.0L 4 cylinder.

This video makes me miss my first new car so badly! I totally understand your feelings about this car. It makes me wish I could go back in time. I was just through my first year in the Marine Corps and saved enough for a down-payment on a new car. I just turned 21. My dad agreed to co-sign a loan for me. One of my older brothers helped me pick out a new red 86 Pontiac Sunbird GT, 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual, tilt steering, cruise control, power steering, and brakes. Pop up sunroof. Same looking aluminum alloy wheel design as the Trans Am at that time. Goodyear Eagle GT white letter tires. Pop-up headlight covers. Trans Am style tail lights. Trunk lid rear spoiler. It was such a good-looking car for the time.

Just subscribed after seeing this video. First time watching you. Glad YT recommended it.
I love to see these old vehicles in great shape, even if they weren't appreciated or even good back in the day. My personal vehicle is overlooked by virtually everyone, but it's mine and that's all it takes in my opinion to be something special. Clearly someone loved this car dearly and it shows.
For $3k? It wouldn't be for me, but if you really wanted one your whole life this is probably in all likelihood the best one still alive. Living in New England, all of these were rusted away by 2000.

I’ve never watched your channel until just now. You did excellent at $3000 because you have about as good of an example of a second generation phase one Z24 that one could ask for. The condition is exceptional! These cars were typically owned by younger people who didn’t always take the best care of them. Cars from this era tend to have really bad paint quality from the factory and also rusted out really easily, especially in the Midwest. The body on yours is well above average condition and you have it in a really good color. The condition of the original interior is absolutely mind blowing! Even if you tried to take care of these cars the interiors would disintegrate. On yours, the dash, center console, the armrests, the seats, the carpet, are all just phenomenal! It certainly tells the story of a car that did not live outside. It’s very clear that someone showed that car lots and lots of love. The only thing that could have possibly made it better would be if it was a manual. I think this is the only second generation phase one model that I’ve ever seen without the digital dash outside of a 1990 model. I used to have a second generation phase two (1993) 5-speed Z24 that I sold close to 20 years ago. Like you, I’ve had a G-body (Cutlass), fox body 5.0, 4th generation F-body…. But of all the cars I’ve had, the 93’ Z24 is the one I wish I could have back. No, it wasn’t the fastest or the best breathing machine; but the exhaust note was great for a little V6 and it was a fun car to drive in a stick. Like you stated, these cars are tied to the memories of our youthful years that we lived. The amount of spare parts that came with your car was pretty cool too. If I recall, lots of parts typically would start going bad on those 60 degree V6 motors between 60k miles and 100k miles. I’m surprised they didn’t include a TCC lockup solenoid as that was super common to go on that particular transmission. I live in a major urban center with a huge metropolitan area where these cars were everywhere and cheap back in the day. In 2023 they don’t seem to exist in the wild anymore but still pop up for sale every once in a blue moon. There are usually two types that pop up for sale around here, really nice, and really beat up. The nice ones are usually convertibles, usually automatic, and typically people are asking $5,000-$8,000 for them depending on how low the miles are. The beat up ones are super rusted and someone would be lucky to get anyone to buy it at their $1500 price. So believe me, at $3000, for that car, you did awesome.

The 2.8 in the 3rd gen F-bodies weren't bad and truthfully more fun then I thought possible before driving a couple (both 5-speed manual and auto). I had a base model '85 Cavalier with Z-24 sideskirts. The red thing in the trunk is a helper airbag. It goes inside the coil spring and when inflated, the load capacity is increased.

I'm 46 years old, your car is not only exquisite to look at, the logs of everything all the way thru.. well, let's just say I'm feeling giddy.
