Keep in mind that the old king, Yeongjo is none other than Prince Yeoning, son of Lady Dong Yi. How would he become cruel after her mother's righteous upbringing, right?!
While It is true that he was a harsh and perhaps a cruel father he was a righteous king when it comes to reigning his people. He is viewed as one of the Greatest kings of Joseon Dyanstsy who benefited the people along with Sejong the Great. I guess parenting and being righteous with administration require completely different traits
There is a bit of that element of familial tragedy and timings not working out for great kings of Joseon dynasty. Not all of them, but at least a few. - Taejong may have contributed to quite a few bloodsheds, but made right decisions regarding his children. It really helped in the case of his son, Sejong the Great. - Sejo's situation with familial tragedy's more complicated, and his rewarding of those who helped him take the throne may have worsened situations for decades after that. - Yeongjo's situation is tricky due to matters of legitimacy, which had meant that for first 3 decades of his life he's had to do everything to keep himself alive and in contention. That, combined with his exceptional abilities, also contributed to very high expectations placed on the sole-remaining son of his...who was also born at very late age. While not exact to details (and no need! the film still does a great job portraying this tragedy), tragedy was brewing for decades because of high expectations being crown prince born so late in Yeongjo's life.
It isn't just his biological mother. He also has his two legitimate(queens) stepmothers who treat him well. However, I can try to answer the question with the best of my ability about Yeongjo. Yeongjo's mother Sukbin is in a status much lower than a commoner so he is quite insecure of his own status especially his predecessor King Gyeongjong whose mother is superior in status. Even though his reign is short, he probably would've been a good king but if I remember correctly, because of his health and that he had no children, Yeongjo is his successor and did some of his duties. When Gyeongjong did die, there were harsh rumors that Yeongjo poisoned him which added to his insecurity. In addition, when Yeongjo was still a prince, many of the opposing faction had made attempts to kill him. His stepmother/adopted mother protected him until he became king. When Sado became Crown Prince, it is said that his retinue and staff were consisted of servants that once served King Gyeongjong and they do not like the prince as many were still loyal to Gyeongjong. The reason is to dispel rumors but it didn't do well for the young prince which possibly contributed to his deteriorating mental health in the first place.
i now understand the grieve of San in the red sleeve.
this was my first korean historical drama, i cried a lot for prince Sado
They show no compassion or forgiveness, that is why Christianity changed these dog cat rat eaters. It’s better to cook food than eat it raw!
