I just found that you can also use "Dancing Dissolve" as a blend mode to keep the grain moving. Might save a couple extra steps/layers. Thanks for the tutorial!
I felt like having the extra layers for the track mattes were really annoying to have, so to achieve the same effect, I put small wiggles on either the mask feather or the mask expansion, which nullifies the need for the extra mattes. I also found that for a circular shape, there were areas where the pixels from the dissolve bending mode wouldn't update depending on the shape of the mask and it's feather. I ended using the 'dancing dissolve' (which negates the need for a wiggle completely) which for some weird reason, doesn't have the same issue as the 'dissolve' blending mode haha
Thanx! Too bad the dissolve mode doesn't work on 3D layers, but I managed to make the layers 2D and then manually animate them, there's always a work around.
What about when rotating shapes? I've done your second method with a circle and I can move its position and change its rotation at the same time, the second grain layer still moves out side the circle's edges.
The bitrate I used this time was a bit too low, sorry about that!
especially for this grain! also a good lesson ;-)
I plan on using this effect soon... what bitrate do you recommend I use?

This was so helpful !! Thank you so much!!!!!
Great tutorial, question: how can you change the color of the gradient in time, so start black and end white for example...
Tnx
U can keyframe the colors, so set a keyframe, scrub timeline, edit gradient, boom
I've been looking for that !!! Super tutorial!!!
Cheers!!
Great tutorial man!!
Gracias!!! Muy buen tutorial!
