Appreciate it! I had to do it that way due to how much time there was between recording days. I wanted to get it all out faster but my work schedule just wasn’t allowing it so I broke it up.
It's nice to see I'm not the only one that wants this style box. I built the same one for my old Maxima, which I no longer have. I'm most likely going to wait until summer time to build this. Sucks not having a garage... I love how meticulous you are. If you're going to do something, do it right, right? I would have tossed in some poly-fil into the box as well. But, I'm sure it sounds sweet just the way it is!
Patrick S I appreciate the positive feedback. I have also been tossing around the idea of adding poly fill I bought some just haven’t taken the box out to do it yet. But yeah I don’t like doing things more than once so the extra effort is worth it to me to ensure that doesn’t happen. I have plenty of stuff to come so stay tuned!
This is one of the cleanest examples of this type of enclosure that I've seen, and I've watched A LOT of these videos. Your prep work and attention to detail really paid off. Nicely done 👌🏼 How is the sound quality compared to the Kicker setup that you replaced?
I really appreciate that! When there isn’t a hole in the surround it’s like night and day comparing the two. I love the setup but need to replace the sub due to the hole that got poked through it with groceries lol
Damn fine build! I know this is an older video but I am just now about to start my first. Lots of knowledge and skill in your videos thanks brother for the step by step breakdown
In all, the materials minus the tools if you already have them cost me about $120.00. I bought harbor freight tools which were about $80 dollars extra. audio equipment was separate all together and will vary based on what you plan on running. If I had not taken the time to film, edit and all that stuff I could have knocked this box out in a long weekend. For this specific one it took me about 3 weeks of working on it when time was permitted.
Great vid man. I have 2 questions though. Why the Rondo not regular Bondo and couldn't you completely finish the first half including the sound deadening before you built the other side? I try to limit my contortions to a bare minimum at my age.
Thank you! Now to answer your questions; I used rondo over just bondo because I wanted the final layer of filler to go on smooth, self level with minimal effort (which made my sanding process much easier) and lastly provide better adhesion to the previous fiberglass and resin coats already applied. As for the sound deadener I didn’t apply it earlier on because I wasn’t sure if I would need to add any additional layers of chop mat to the inside for more strength and support once the sub was mounted. This was my first time building one of these so I def learned during this process as well.
You really hit it good , one of the best DIY i've seen so far.... only one thing, why not use a good connector in the box? That would've looked so much better.
I thought about it but I didn’t really have any place flat enough on the back to mount a terminal box and not take the chance of it leaking. I can always fix that later down the road also if i want plus for me it is also an out of sight out of mind kinda deal.
Bradley Milburn since its a mold its a tight fit in the pocket. The wood floor install helps press into the channel I made underneath the front of the box to hold it from sliding around.
You could also add velcro strips to the bottom if you're still worried about it shifting. Might make it a little difficult to put in and take out if needed though.
At this current time, I have not been able to find any pre constructed boxes from any of the major brands that are setup for our car. Any good stereo shop in your area should be able to make you one, but expect to pay anywhere from $250-$400 for it.
Good job bro .... I cant believe u didnt spray paint the back black u are OCD how i know im the same way wen it comes to building or creating something looks dope tho im about to build me a fiberglass sub box for my foxbody mustang
Best believe I considered painting it. Only reason I didn’t was because of the temperature and I didn’t want to have to sand it down when the paint ran cause I knew it was going to lol. I’m gonna make a new one for a 12 next fall.
Wow! This was an amazing tutorial, definitely something I’d consider doing in the future. Quick question, do you think creating an enclosure for a 12 inch subwoofer would be doable?
Funny you ask, it’s not mounted at all. The constraints were so tight that it literally holds itself in and doesn’t move. As an extra measure I installed a wood floor that is cut and butts up against the wood bottom of the enclosure. I truly appreciate the positive responses!
My enclosure was built using all polyester based resin. You can use either or but polyester is cheaper and more used with fiberglass enclosures that I have seen. I didn’t need the extra advantages that come with epoxy resin like clarity, moisture resistance to name a few. Check with the material your using to know what resin to buy to be safe for your project.
Supposedly you need to press that sound deadening material until it stays completely flat without any pattern to archieve the maximum efficiency (that's what I've read)
I tried to record the sound but it just didn’t pick it up well. It sounds really good in my opinion and am very happy with it these years later. My 2020 closeout video has a sound demo at the end of it and even with a tear in the surround in the sub during that video it still performed well.
You can either use Butt connectors or soldering to attach the neg and pos wires from the sub to one end and then do the same to the pos and neg channel leads coming from the amp
So it came from either Joanns fabric or Walmart but it’s a faux leather material kinda like what I linked below. It has no backing and has a little bit of stretch. www.walmart.com/ip/ANMINY-Vinyl-Faux-Leather-Fabric-Pleather-Upholstery-54-Wide-By-the-Yard-Multiple-Colors/115416382?variantFieldId=actual_color
Question for you, why did you bother sanding it so much if you were going to wrap it? Im making mine carpeted, you think ill need to sand it that much? How much fiberglass mat did you use? Thanks a lot, great series you made!
With carpeting, sanding won’t be needed quite as much cause carpet hides a lot of cosmetic flaws. Vinyl and leather on the other hand show flaws through the material so if it isn’t smooth you will see all the imperfections.
I don’t recall the exact SQFt but I went through 2 packages of it from walmart plus what I still had in my possession before hand. Focus less on SQFt of Mat and more on the amount of layers you lay down. A good 4 layers should be strong enough to get the job done.
@@Foxcraze could I get some clips of how it sounds? You think if I do a 12inch and same diy box it should fit in right cause it looks like there not alot of room left to put an bigger one in
The box is a very snug fit plus, I made the channel on the bottom face of the enclosure deep enough for the flooring to slip into and hold in into place as well.
In total including tools I had to buy, it was about $150.00. Way less that I would have paid to have someone else build it plus I added to my tool inventory at the same time.
The apartment complex I was living in had a rule against portable heaters being used in the units. I was informed when the breaker was tripped from using one and they had to come reset it since the box was in a different unit.
Demo of its function? Sub functionality usually doesn’t relay well over a phone which is what this video was recorded with and is why I didn’t do one at the time. That said the box is still in the car same setup and still running well!
