Truly a band that was the "sum of its parts" but as a guitarist who has tried in vain to find rhythm sections that can properly play some of these songs I have alot of admiration and love for the combo of Ward and Butler. Rudimentary, perfect, always serving the song. Jazz on steroids.

      @fonzario 4 роки тому +1

@Monica Lewis. Well, you are correct about the fact that they’re still kickin’ but I heard a more recent video of Geezer playing Bassically, and he didn’t have the same groove and feel he had on the album. For example Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith plays Sweet Emotion the same live as he played it on the album. Don’t get me wrong Geezer played some great bass grooves on the albums that I’ve copied note for note and his patterns seldom repeat. I noticed the same with Jack Bruce. Wasn’t quite as agile if you will, on the bass, as he was when he was young.

Yuri Fyodorov , I get what you mean. Black Sabbath did their own thing, so it's not really fair to compare with Led Zepplin and what they did. Both are great in different ways. Geezer Butler did some fantastic writing, shame that he and Sharon Osbourne did not get along well.
      btw, it's Tony Iommi *
I think the grand master guitarist is probably Eric Clapton, but so many others have brought us so much good music.

I am also 52 so I know exactly what your saying. First off you just don't think to yourself that someone fifty two years old is going to be listening to this, in fact my step dad used to tell me " just wait until you get to be my age, your going to want a little peace and quiet" all I could think in my head was I would rather be dead than be alive and not like black sabbath anymore. He did a really good job of sending me down the wrong road. At 13 years old I was actually worried about having lost my lust for life and striving for a life of mediocrity by age 45. I doubled up on everything that made me feel young because I did not want to end up like that and apparently it worked. I still love sabbath at double the volume I still drink dos equis beers I still have a copy of we sold our soul for rock and roll (the double album set) I still chew double mint gum I still fantasize about the double mint twins. At this stage in life all I worry about is living life to the fullest because when it's time for me to meet my maker I don't want him to yawn and say so.... I see you got yourself a little peace and quiet. I want him to say holy me where do I start. And I will say you can start with the doublemint twins I've got a lot of apologizing to do to them.

The band was formed and the music was written before they gave it a name. They could have named their band anything and the only difference would be your comment saying thank God there was already a band named Earth and [band name] became [band name].
I guess another difference could have been my grand mother not freaking out the first time she saw their logo drawn on my 6th grade history book’s cover. I wouldn’t have to explain to her that Earth or whatever is just a band name, not a declaration of my allegiance to Satan.

From Tony's mesmerizing riffs that move you to rock n boogie n bang your head to Geezer's superior backbone and insanely beautiful lyrics as well and never least Stinky's heavy as Bonham and delicate as thunder drums and sent to the sky with Ozzy's clear articulated devil sans angelic howls of pure vocalization can I say more

    Precious cups within the flower
    deadly petals with strange power
    faces shine a deadly smile
back up on you at your trial
Chill and numbs from head to toe
    icy sun with frosty glow
Why'd you go reaching your sorrow?
why'd you go read no tomorrow
Feel your spirit rise with the priest
feel your body falling to its knees
    Take your walk of remorse
take your body to a corpse
take your body to a corpse
take your body to a corpse
    if you want all remorse
take your body to a corpse

We got home, fired up the stereo, and Holy Mother of God! How could the music be as, or even more powerful than that cover artwork? Black Sabbath is = the greatest of all time and in my opinion, own the heavy metal genre.

I remember buying it at 12 yo in 1972. Rock music and bands were so exciting to find and follow and I was in that tween coming of age period. I read a blurb in, I think, Hit Parade (it was still around) about this new "underground" rock band. The album jacket intrigued me and I bought it. Remember thinking how strange and different it was and Ozzy's vocals so unique. I loved it and was an instant fan. When they came to town in 72' I pulled every string I could with my parents to get me to that concert. One of them being is that my father could not know. At 63 yo, I still play this particular album of Black Sabbath at least a couple times a year.
