    great review as always, anyway you can actually operate / touch the head unit while driving... there’s a switch “DVD/NAVI) below the aircon panel (next to power outlet) just make sure the switch is in the un-pushed position to operate the headunit while driving otherwise you cant operate the head unit at all while driving. - personal fortuner owner

    I do try sitting on the second row seat, and my head is touching the roof until I need to slightly bend my neck. I'm quite surprised that this huge car cannot fit a 6.1 foot man on second row. By the way, thanks for you video.

    Hi Bobby. If you reading this, I just want to know if you know any differences between this one & the latest full spec diesel variant regarding driving feel, engine response, fuel efficiency etc. Maybe you can make another review for the that particular diesel variant. Thanks

    Hi Bobby,
    Excellent detailed review.
    I really like this style of documentary style of review. Very practical and honest review, I felt as if I was riding shotgun with you during the process haha!
    How would you rate the Fortuner as an every day family car (of 6) for the urban as generally the reviews from the Internet especially rates this vehicle to be quite good for its intended purposes...a serious off-road vehicle, great for the rough outdoors, so-so for the city roads! Is it reliable? Is the Fuel Consumption for the 2.7L engineer for a 2010 kg car high? Is the asking price is too high compared the basic kit count? Is the sound/NVH insulation good?
    MPVs are generally a better people mover choice but I really dislike MPVs, and I personally prefer SUVs.
    I am considering the Fortuner for my next ride, but can't really make up my mind due to the fact UMW's reputation of charging a premium despite lower count of standard equipment compared to other makes kinda hurts the brand image.
    Some features that I would have liked, which is available in Australian/Indonesia/Thailand models such as the AC 230v power outlet, 2.8 Turbo Diesel, LED interior lights, front/rear proximity sensor (not parking sensor) are not available in the UMW offering...
    I have done my research of course, as alternative to the Fortuner 2.7 SRZ
    Of all the 5+2 or 7 seaters SUVs at sub RM200k retail price, I would like your opinion on them.
    Kia Sorento - Not sure about this one...haven't test drive it yet.
    Hyundai Santa Fe - The 2 airbags is a a deal killer.
    Nisan X-Trail 2.5L - 2 airbags and barely usable 3rd row, a deal killer.
    Isuzu D-MUX - 2 airbags, crude interiors (urgh!) and cramped 3rd row, another deal killer.
    Mitsubishi Outlander - Good standard equipment but cramped 3rd row and only front AC vents, another deal killer.
    Mitsubishi Pajero Sport - Obsolete in face of the new 2016 model not available in Malaysia, and also 2 air bags.
    Ford Everest 2.2 - too bare minimal standard equipment compared to the 3.2 model
    I not sure if there are any other 5+2 SUVs below RM200k that I have not listed above.
    Appreciate your time and response, as 200k is a lot of money to plunk in!

      Thanks for the compliments! Let's see, in terms of ride, the Fortuner's suspension is tuned to be very sporty, it genuinely handles well, but at the expense of ride pliancy. That being said, ladder frame cars usually have a hard time giving comfortable ride. The Isuzu MU-X on the other hand, is very comfortable, unusually comfortable for a ladder frame body, but at the expense of handling. The Fortuner will run rings around the MU-X were if on handling.
      The stand out feature of the Fortuner is really the price vs specifications for its segment. Yes you mention other countries have a lil bit more spec but i find not much in wanting except the distinct lack in USB ports. There's a new MU-X coming with updated features, but I reckon it would be rather impossible to chase up to the Fortuner's interior standards.
      As for the others, the one car I really want to try out is the Ford Everest, but like you said, the 2.2 is almost empty compared to the loaded 3.2, and at almost RM60k apart, it's a big difference.
      The Mitsubishi Outlander has impressive safety features, and given the low ride heigh, old people doesn't need to 'climb' onto the car likewise ladder frame cars that of the Fortuner, Everest, or MU-X. Or even the full size SUV Sorento and Santa Fe, ingress and egress is very easy with the Outlander. And it's stylish too, but it's infotainment screen is rather lack lustre, but the redemption would be it's not integrated into the dash so you can easily swap out an aftermarket one. As for the ride comfort, it's rather acceptable, but handling wise, it leaves a lot to be desired, not a bad chassis, but the inaccurate and loose steering wheel.
      I do agree with you, compared to MPV form factors, SUV form factors look very good. Did you miss any? Well:
      Honda BRV is coming, not in your price range as it's below RM100k, but third row is comparable to these boys, albeit a much smaller car in terms of width. Seating seven is one thing, but it will never have the wide car seats of the Mitsubishi Outlander that's superb in comfort because the car is narrow inherently.
      New Honda CRV will debut next year, and rumour has it that it will be the first CRV with a 7 seater option. Given Honda's recent form, the interior is expected to be great.
      Lastly, the Mazda CX-9 is coming, this is the only 7 seater SUV where the interior is more upmarket than the Fortuner (amongst) non premium brands, and we heard the prices will hopefully be below RM250k. But this is straight out a premium product from design, technology, engine, drivetrain and interior fitting. Mazda to me is a premium car brand pretending not to be one because their interiors are so high quality now and design wise, they're ahead of Lexus, Infiniti or Acura in my opinion.

      Thanks Bobby for taking the time to reply (and its a lengthy one too).
      Your comments give me "extra" perspective.
      I do fancy the CX-9 but the current 3.7L NA form puts it way above my budget. Perhaps the new 2.0 turbo version would see a drastic price reduction to be below 250k.
      As for the new CR-V, I checked that the US models are 1.5 turbo petrol, but in 5 seater guise only, but it does have rather good levels of security features.

    • @BobbyAngmalaysia
      @BobbyAngmalaysia  8 років тому +1

      Boon Khong Foo i was referring to the new CX-9 with its SkyActiv 2.5 Turbo engine. It was supposed to be priced below RM250k but the recent ringgit slump might hamper their efforts in lowering prices.

    • @BobbyAngmalaysia
      @BobbyAngmalaysia  8 років тому +1

      Boon Khong Foo for me, 7 seater SUVs, i'll rule out those without full airbags, budget i'll go BRV, mid range i'll go Outlander, higher up will be Fortuner and if within affordability, definitely the CX-9

    Bobby, Toyota Malaysia just released new variants, with the top spec now being the 2.4 turbo diesel 4x4, which has all the standard equipment from the previously top variant 2.7L NA petrol version.
    Can you please do a review of the new top spec variant? I'm looking for a 7 seater SUV that has more space for the 3rd row (others are just too cramped!).

    Can you feel a big difference in power between the 2.4 and 2.7?

    • @BobbyAngmalaysia
      @BobbyAngmalaysia  8 років тому +3

      Jaime Maniquis i drove the 2.4 Hilux and the 2.7 Fortuner. I won't say i can't guess how they feel. Turbo lag in the hilux is imminent, so you can expect that in the Fortuner. The 2.7 engine's torque is 'just enough', so when the 2.4 diesel's turbo kicks in, there's definitely a good push like all diesels do. The 2.7 on uphill keeps switching gears thou. Overall experience i'd say the 2.7 of course is smoother and more comfortable, especially considering the absence of the diesel clatter

      @BobbyAngmalaysia  8 років тому

      Hi Vivi, apologies as Malaysia does not sell the new Pajero Sport, hence I cannot give a verdict on that. But the new Fortuner is exceptional in handling and interior build quality. However given that it's a ladder on frame car, and Toyota surprisingly decided to give it a stiffer setup to give sporty handling, it is a lot more bumpier than the Isuzu MU-X. The MU-X is very comfortable, but can't really throw a corner or two at it.

    except for the front lamps area, the rest of the car design are quite dated like an old uncle-ishh toyota. They need to show more passion in design. Just look at how the european like peugeot design their suv...even the mazda did better. It is at least 10 years behind in terms of design flair compare to the top.

      Daffa Cadel Malaysian-spec Fortuners are similar to the Indonesian-spec Fortuners like the HeadUnit and others, the only difference is the variants which SRZ is the top-spec unit rather than 4x2 but in 4x4 and the Top-spec VRZ being the entry-level with reduced features while the Indonesian version VRZ is more equipped with the similar Malaysian version top-spec SRZ but it uses 2.7 petrol.
