Great video. The air ship idea was an idea in the early stages of the first Patapon Game except it’s a giant bird carrying a Patapon and a cannon. Maybe he got the idea from that. As for the music, I think the individual Ratatan might sing unique song. However, that would be a bit straining if development took time to make unique music for each Ratatan.
I am so hyped for this game, and I'm SO glad that people think the same, we reached the kickstarter goal in under an hour, the discord has been amazing to be in
After hearing about Ratatan I watched your Retrospective - and thank you for giving me what the last two games were about. I was only able to play the first one which stuck with me ever since I played it when I was 10 years old haha! With Ratatan on the horizon, I'm excited to relive my nostalgia - with company this time!
Not only a spiritual successor, but a great love letter to the original Patapon Trilogy. A game given this much love by Patapon fans then and now, and with meeting those Kickstarter goals so fast, some big game companies wished they can be like this. The Ratatan lore is full of callbacks and references to Patapon, and I'm all for it. April 2025 will be worth the wait and hope (and maybe some coping too)!
Definitely, you don't wait 12 years to release a Patapon followup without it being a complete passion project - thankfully we're all still active and hungry for more!
I had absolutely no clue that there would ever be another patapon game until I heard about this! I'm super super excited! Patapon always had so much style and character to it, I'm really looking forward to this
My current running theory for multiple inputs having the same "direction" is that maybe you switch between vocal colors or "styles" by pressing a directional button. Thus, "Zun" and "Taka" are possibly the equivalent to "Pon" and "Chaka" in the Yellow/Right "stance." The arrows in corperated into the words could then likely be an accessibility feature for colorblind individuals, like reCORE did for its color based combat system. Pure speculation at this point in time, but the idea came to me.
I watched your patapon retrospective like 2 weeks before the announcement what a coincidence XD Really happy this is coming to PC , I hope this project succeeds a lot and sony finally ports the old patapon games in there too, it would be amazing to play them on a steam deck
Not a coincidence, it was very deliberate! The retrospective has exploded and a lot of people wanted me to talk about Ratatan (which I was going to do anyways). I think Sony is feeling a little silly for not making a new game sooner, if I had to guess 😁
recently, someone asked black bird's name on devs q&a, their answer was something like "his name is kro (or cro i don't remember, btw the information that i type in brackets is not what devs say lol), and he will guide us through"
I think the *seemingly* seven beats works rather well. With four bests and three off-beats in between. Because, if you think about it, even though you oress the button four tomes in Patapon, there are also often seven beats. Pa (ta) Pa (ta) Pa (ta) Pon It makes sense for a drum to make nultiple syllable sounds like that but not for singing
why did i ONLY hear about this NOW?!?! i want to support them but it's over .w. i love patapon and hearing this made me so happy but knowing the campaign is over really sours my mood, knowing i could have supported them and help the project .w.
Nelnal has been one of my favorite character designers for years, so when I heard they were going to be working on a soul successor to Patapon I was really excited! And they did not disappoint, so pumped to see how this game ends up
I'm uncertain if anyone else has mentioned this, but from what I've been able to gather, the extra notes that are shown in the gameplay teaser *seem* to be eighth notes - which, for those of you who don't know much about music, are basically notes that fit directly between the four main beats of a typical measure. The reason it only looks like seven is because, for whatever reason, they don't use the final eighth note in the measure. Probably so that the name of the game fits in more comfortably. I would also guess that the same input results in a different command depending on whether it's on the downbeat - the quarter note - or the upbeat. For instance, "Ra," being on the downbear and "Ta," being the upbeat. If this is true, that could potentially lead to a *terrifying* amount of variability in the number of commands that you can issue to your little army, so I'm sorta looking forward to how they might utilize that. Of course, it could also be the case that most of the inputs work like "Pata," in Patapon and just automatically play two notes, save for the final input of the sequence, and the way the words show up individually is just a stylistic choice
They're starting to rapidly close in on that $1 mil mark on the kickstarter, now 😭 I'm so happy for the devs and fans. I never played the original Patapon games but I'm beyond hyped for Ratatan.
As soon as I get the news, I immediately spread it to my friends that also liked patapon since it's their childhood game too. We rejoiced so much and share fun moments in those days. So far looking great and everything. The community and backers supporting the Kickstarter so well that they're able to achieve the milestone in just 2-3 days T_T! Never been this much excited, happy and hopeful in a while now!
The last time I've played the Patapon trilogy with my childhood friends have been more than a decade now before we all parted ways. I sincerely hope this game gets major recognition in the gaming community so my friends could hear of this great news.
when you mentioned how it seems the game is 7 beats per command instead of 4, i want to note that when you look at the commands shown in the gameplay trailer, they still work with 4 button presses since the start of Rata, Zuntaka, and Yahoi are all on the first, second and third beats, with the ending command (Tan,and Hoi so far) always on the 4th. so it's possible that just like with pata and chaka in patapon, the offbeat is just the second part of the note, they just have separate icons instead of the same one now (Patapon showed Pata and Chaka as one image, but they have access to more resources now so they could split the offbeat part of the command into another image so it appears on offbeats, making the whole command look more like one whole line of music and not the four separated drum hits)
My initial thought was that you could still play the standard four-on-the-floor beats to issue commands, but each command would have an "alternative" version with extra beats in-between that would be harder to pull off, but provide greater effect. That's something I've always wanted to do in the Patapon games.
@@mami.mumemo tan is one syllable, but its two moras. and Japanese is mora timed which means the time between each mora is roughly the same. as opposed to basically every other language which are not mora timed and only care about syllables. So your wording is wrong but the effect you try to describe exists.
Wow, I completely missed this Kickstarter, but it looks great. I played the demos of the first couple Patapon way too much before purchasing Patapon 2, but the levels got too long to be convenient to play on the bus. Still, I likely owe quite a bit of my love of rhythm games to Patapon, and I hope they can find a game loop that's fun to play on PC.
I just learned of this and I'm so excited! You showing off how the music ramps up and listening to that made the nostalgia and excitement swell up in my chest! I can't wait for this!
It's lovely that things have sort of come full circle in regards to your (amazing) retrospective video! Ending on a hopeful note regarding "Project Jabberwocky", and now here we are - the team themselves even leaving a comment on your video! How wonderful is that? A few other neat things of note from my own observations: - Things seem a lot more lighthearted this time around (so far, anyway). Redo seems like a happier, more vibrant world, and the antagonistic forces seem more "antihero" than true evils. Less like it's a violent battle to the bitter end, and more this... mayhem of giant armies just walloping each other. The overall additude of the game's presentation and narration seems way livelier! - I wonder if some of these cameos will involve the "ending" of the Patapon series. Redo being the restored world after the Patapons reached Earthend and restored the shattered world, their legacy being this Medama power, and the power of music as a whole. (In fact, it seems like the Power of Music will be a big theme.) It's cute to imagine that the mysterious boat sounds at the end of Patapon 3 could arguably be suggesting at Fortrun and the other big ships...) - The Ratatan all have unique voices! The isolated songs seem to feature Keronronpa's "hoarse voice", but every Ratatan we've seen in detail has a voice actor attributed to them. Which really adds some nice depth to the "vocal commands" from Patapon 3! - It seems like different regions might involve different genres of music, at least as a base. Yeehawler Mountain and the Paridian Sea seem to both start off as the themes for the bad guys, before the Ratatan and Cobun get so amped up they manipulate the song into something that's distinctly theirs. So maybe we'll get a region dedicated to funk, and... well, who knows? - The songs have definitive endings and resolutions now! Which might seem like a small thing, but it's neat to know that rather than the song just getting cut off into a victory fanfare, there'll be a "send off" as the stage ends, almost like the Ratatan and crew are saying a sort of confident "Farewell!" as they make their escape, or whatever determines a stage being completed. Regardless of whatever ends up happening, I'm so excited! It's been amazing to behold all these old Patapon fans coming out from the woodwork as if roused from an ancient slumber - almost like how the Patapon games of old always began, the whole troupe being drawn in by the music finally returning to them. I've already sunk a good chunk of savings into this - I'm so excited for whatever information follows, along with the inevitable release!!
i like to think that ratatan takes place centuries after patapon, but thats just a headcanon also im gald i got into this game at the time that i did because WOW (thx for getting me into the series thru ur retrospective btw it has become a massive comfort series lmao
Oh wow, that's awesome that video helped you become a fan! I don't disagree with your headcanon either, I personally think this game takes place years after Patapon as well.
I still love Patapon to this day, so I'm glad other people still do and it was easily funded, no way fans would let an official successor slip through their fingers. All the new additions and being able to FINALLY play it on pc is amazing.
Ughhhh, the commands songs/sounds sound so good. They're playful and motivating. I've used Patapon's OST while working out and I cant wait to hear all of this games soundtrack too
@@mchaosg I did! I'm excited to see what he and the team have in store for us. It's funny, when I was a Kid playing Patapon I would march around my room while playing. It would help me keep rhythm and kinda sing along with the songs. I'm happy to see more people introduced to this series
The music for ratatan is just amazing I love that they kept the music growth as your combo builds. Also the voices are just adorable! The little guys singing their little hearts out having a blast brings me so much joy!
(Once again, sorry for writing in spanish, i could take the time to translate it, but i just wanted to show i´m from latam and really like both of your videos and content... and sorry for the typing mistakes, im not the best in this, and i dont like to use google translate.)
I really hope the game has proper endgame. I loved getting my army extremely strong in patapon 2, like Maxing my rarepons and giving all demon equipment, but just storming through the campaign and not having anything to properly test my strength against. I also hope the minigames return
Me too, considering it's a rougelike I imagine we'll have a lot of replayable/randomized content that will keep us busy. There is a minigame stretch goal on the Kickstarter, so hopefully it's met!
God it would be so sick if you could set it up to respond to voice commands. How cool would it be if you called out "Zun-taka-zun-taka-zun-taka-tan!" and they actually *responded*
I remember playing patapon 2 so much that my parents had vietnam flashbacks when they heard me boot it up after watching your retrospective haha I don't know how i just happened to see your retrospective just to find out about this announcement but it's weirdly reassuring that I can go from a kid who doesn't understand how saving works so he just played the same half of the game for like 2 years to going to uni and still being appreciate the masterpiece that was patapon, and I get to look forward to a basically matured version of patapon, god I hope things go well for the devs
@@mchaosg They said they liked it at first, they even tried the game out a few times but eventually I played it so much it became like a more annoying version of baby shark to them lmao
I guess we could say Dodonga was so tired of patapons beating him up for many centuries that he decided to break the multiverse and show up in the Ratatan universe for revenge. For real tho *I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR THIS GAME AAAAAA*
Maybe the 7 input commands are actually doubled-up automatically. Like, press 1 button, and 2 words appear after eachother. So it'd be input>input>input>input, but the characters speak in 2>2>2>1 It also fits the timing of the pulsing outer border. The characters are essentially combo'ing their lyrics and ending it with a shorter finale. This also matches the pace of the lyrics in Patapon games, like with the Move Command: Pa-ta>Pa-ta>Pa-ta>Pon.
When I was a kid and loved Patapon 2 when I could play it on my PSP(never played any of the other games), and still remember it and LocoRoco as the most unique games I ever played in my life, so seeing it getting an actual spiritual successor to the series actually instantly made me try to see how I can back it. Mind you, I wasn't talking or even thinking about the series before the Ratatan trailer was recommended to me even though it was in the back of my mind since I was around 6-8 years old(I am now 19, it was that memorable to me lol), so I was so surprised I kinda yelled out loud. I will definitely look forward to how the development goes ! Side note: since I was a kid at the time of playing, I wasn't aware of any of the circumstances behind the series nor was interested in it. Imagine my bewilderment when I watched your Retrospective that not only there was a 3rd Patapon with cool looking characters, but also that the entire series was made alongside one of the dev team's family.
That's really cool, thank you for sharing your experience! I'm also glad I was able to tell you more about the series, it makes me happy to know people are learning things from my vault of useless knowledge lol
!! I'm just so stoked! And with the addition of a David Wise collab and chiptune option is awesome. Also, the Redo pun is almost certainly all your theories--Japan loves their multilayered wordplay.
Patapon was one of my childhood fav game and pretty much what attracted me to the PSP (aside from Need for Speed). Im very glad that Ratatan is a spiritual successor though I hope it will be widely available as much as possible in all platforms. This would be perfect to Switch Players and I hope I see it in GOG or Steam.
I wanted to post it yesterday but the kickstarter lost a bunch of funds (see the update for details) and I didn't want to contradict myself too much without re-editing the whole thing.
I'm so glad this is happening, I pledged immediately after I found out it was coming to Steam and can't wait for it to release! I do however think I like the more minimalist artstyle of patapon over ratatan though, I feel like the extra detail and mix of colors may be distracting and make it hard to focus on the whole picture without everything just becoming a kaleidoscope of colors, especially when your fighting another army and the camera zooms out really far like we've seen. I also hope as you said that they'll have more genres like jazz and rock like patapon did, and I think I'd rather just have instrument beats like drums and such over the vocal callouts (which I disabled in Patapon 3 to save my sanity. Who knows, its still early, some of these things may be changed or made options, and I'm glad we're getting this at all. Maybe the fact that its doing so well will give Sony a good kick in the pants to release a remaster of patapon 3, or at least release the first two game's remasters on PC
I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't like the drum shouts, it's not that they're bad but I like hearing the instruments and when it's just constant singing I feel like the song doesn't get room to breathe. But yeah, a lot can change going forward, especially with the visuals.
nelnal is a fantastic artist! the fresh new look they gave fits with the whimsical nature of patapon. i just recommend everyone to look at their work, theyre a uber talented character designer.
Man, ever since I joined the discord server of ratatan. I was really happy to see so many people talk about patapon as some kind of veterans of those games. I played gartic phone with them doing some silly patapon scenarios and it was a ton of fun. So glad to see people know patapon so well it's something I never thought I'd witness
This is the first video of yours i've come across. When I watched the Ratatan trailer I literally had tears of happiness flood out of my eyes. Patapon was with me from mid elementary school to mid of middle school. I graduated uni early this year now I look back at those times with so much happiness and nostalgia. The Ratatan trailer really struck a nerve in my heart. I'm sure you feel that way too, i'm sure we share the same love for this series. I'm now gonna eatch your retrospective. I'm sure i'll love it!
Super hyped for this to come out but at the same time painfully aware of how many kickstarter projects failed to deliver. Really hoping for the team to succeed and not get swept up by their own kickstarter goals
I have upmost faith in Kotani-san to deliver a quality product, but I understand what you mean - this could spell disaster and tarnish all the goodwill with this community...so I'm going to not think about that! lol
Great breakdown, love the channel! I've been hearing Ratatan chants in my head all week, in the background of so many Patapon fans banding together to show support for the game. I hope this helps get the word out even more.
I'm a new player to patapon entirely, stared out with 2, and now I'm playing 3 without any help. I'm excited to see what this new successor has in store, and I hope the difficulty isn't too hard 😅 I can't wait to draw more art of these silly little guys!! C:
It had to have been fate that during watching your retrospective was when Ratatan Kickstarter opened, and hit the goal before the video had even finished lmao. I'm so happy to support it, and I look forward to it's release in ~2025
Crazy I just saw your Patapon Retrospective and your channel for the first time roughly 4 days ago and then heres the RATATAN announcement. What a time to love patapon
I never wanted to wait for such a game that bad in my live, this game brings me joy to see Patapon's legacy been *Redo* into it's successor Ratatan, and i really~ no *REALLY* want them to make plushies out of Cobuns and the Ratatans themselves it would be super cute if it happened
@@mchaosg I don't know, but a chef by the name of Rah Gashapon told me a stew added with an assortment of vegetables, fruits, and meat, cooked over several hours could make for a truly Divine Stew.
@@mchaosg yeah! Love your long-form videos. They just flow well and are very well made. I just finished your katamari video! I'm excited to see what you do next
Honestly would love if you made update videos on how the game is progressing throughout the months or any other related stuff, it would be nice to just have all the info in one place!
As a rare example i first discovered your video, and then just out of hopium searched patapon 4 into youtube. To say im stoked for Ratatan is an understatement. Now off to watch your previous vids lol
The patapon series was one of my favorite to play growing up so seeing this kickstarter, and seeing it so successful so quickly, hypes me up so much I don't know if I can wait until April 2025!
3:01 My theory is that 'Zuntaka' is supposed to be a single beat composed of two strokes, much like how 'Pata' in Patapon is not technically a single stroke but two in one beat. In Patapon, the march command has seven strokes even though there are only four beats.
Aw man! My best friend showed me Ratatan yesterday and did a little bit of google and found your patapon retrospective and was gladly impressed on how invested you are in this games (i'm also a katamari fan, played for days in a row when I lived with the aforementioned friend) after watching your retrospective I thought "this guy is gonna be ELATED when he finds out about ratatan" and here you are. Hope this game comes to fruition soon
I've been elated since it was announced in 2022 as "Project JabberWocky"! It was even announced in my birthday month, so it felt extra special. Thanks for watching, though!
So from what I can tell it's the same measure overall for Ratatan as with Patapon, we simply moved from playing only on half-notes like in Patapon to playing on quarter-notes, which is for the most part, an easy way to increase the tempo and complexity of the game mechanics. That being said it most likely also means that if you mess up an input then you can only recover on screen flash which could make fumbles a lot worse for newer players than in Patapon. As for how we can have multiple notes making up a direction, my best guess is that the game uses the face buttons, as a modifier key for each note set making up four directions and the d-pad is then likely changed from (possibly) movement to giving the commands as we hear both the Ratata singing the notes and in some instances our presumed warband leader (who is fittingly for this type of system using a stringed instrument where this control style would make sense) plucking away at the notes. We could also just get multiple notes for a direction as a result of them adding unique instruments to the game to pick for each mission and the above could just be my sleep deprived rambling looking for a system that doesn't exist.
I am so excited to play this game, all I've seen is your retrospective on Patapon, the trailer, and now this, but I am absolutely in love with this game already!
I'm really excited about this. A few days ago I saw your Patapon retrospective so, seeing this today really surprised me. Your content is really nice btw! Keep it up
I was indeed in for a real treat! Thank you for making this so clear. The one thing i am worried about is the catchyness and hoping i wont get bored of the songs
Long as the music is as dynamic and diverse as the previous games, I don't think it'll be an issue at all. The stretch goals for chiptune music, David Wise as a guest composer and even the soon to be met goal of "Orchestrated Music" should definitely keep it interesting. Adachi-san will deliver, I'm confident of it!
I think from what I've seen, going on the beat system. I want to believe that "Zun Taka" is one beat/button press and it ends with "Tan" , but that's just me! Still absolutely love seeing Ratatan pop out of left field!
Hi yes so I've also been analyzing it and regarding the 7 beat measures / Directional inputs, I believe that this is the new system in place and when you think about it, 7 beat measures are not an alien thing to the Patapon Franchise. Don - Dodon - Dodon, the Summoning beat, or any of Patapon3's Sutra mashing. I also believe that the new commands seem to generally follow that concept, although, my guess is that Pure Directional commands (Zun Taka / Rat Tat / Yah Hoi) are universal commands that all characters have, and Mixed Directional commands will probably be different and unique per character! (Also, note how the addition beats like Taka, Tat, and Hoi are all on half-beat measure, filling in the 7 beat measure rule despite Ratatan still flowing in 4 beats.)
I remembered patapon from your retrospective and even commented that I'd love to play it if I had a Playstation console of sorts. Soon as I saw the kickstarter I was already on board!
I'm feeling nostalgic and about to cry! It's been forever since I heard the Patapon rhythm. I just watched the Retrospect and it brings me back to my roots! Definitely teaching my child this game!

The way I see it, this feels like a natural evolution to Patapon's style. There's a lot more detail, but it still keeps the same vibe.

We're far beyond success, now they have just have to deliver an excellent game!
I think the *seemingly* seven beats works rather well. With four bests and three off-beats in between.
Because, if you think about it, even though you oress the button four tomes in Patapon, there are also often seven beats.
Pa (ta) Pa (ta) Pa (ta) Pon
It makes sense for a drum to make nultiple syllable sounds like that but not for singing
Interesting, I like how you explained that.
why did i ONLY hear about this NOW?!?! i want to support them but it's over .w.
i love patapon and hearing this made me so happy but knowing the campaign is over really sours my mood, knowing i could have supported them and help the project .w.
Nelnal has been one of my favorite character designers for years, so when I heard they were going to be working on a soul successor to Patapon I was really excited! And they did not disappoint, so pumped to see how this game ends up
Incredible artist!
Technically this will be the second time we hit it (if you know, you know) but it's definitely in the bag, I'd say!
Then you guys could have a reunion, just like old times!
when you mentioned how it seems the game is 7 beats per command instead of 4, i want to note that when you look at the commands shown in the gameplay trailer, they still work with 4 button presses since the start of Rata, Zuntaka, and Yahoi are all on the first, second and third beats, with the ending command (Tan,and Hoi so far) always on the 4th. so it's possible that just like with pata and chaka in patapon, the offbeat is just the second part of the note, they just have separate icons instead of the same one now (Patapon showed Pata and Chaka as one image, but they have access to more resources now so they could split the offbeat part of the command into another image so it appears on offbeats, making the whole command look more like one whole line of music and not the four separated drum hits)
Could be, that would be a lot easier to manage...not that I'm opposed to more complex command inputs, either.
It's actually 8 syllables on 4 counts, since the japanese "n" counts as a syllable, ta n is two syllables on one beat.
I'm a year late to this vid, but I'm so happy that Patapon will return in someway! Depend on the price, I will support it as soon as possible
I literally watch your patapon video minuets ago, now i see this. Im so hyped!
All according to plan!
I just learned of this and I'm so excited! You showing off how the music ramps up and listening to that made the nostalgia and excitement swell up in my chest! I can't wait for this!
IM SO HYPED! I'VE 100% ALL PATAPON GAMES AND LOVE THEM TILL' THIS DAY!
It's lovely that things have sort of come full circle in regards to your (amazing) retrospective video! Ending on a hopeful note regarding "Project Jabberwocky", and now here we are - the team themselves even leaving a comment on your video! How wonderful is that?
A few other neat things of note from my own observations:
- Things seem a lot more lighthearted this time around (so far, anyway).
(In fact, it seems like the Power of Music will be a big theme.) It's cute to imagine that the mysterious boat sounds at the end of Patapon 3 could arguably be suggesting at Fortrun and the other big ships...)
- The Ratatan all have unique voices!
Ratatan Alpha just dropped. Only the few currently have access to it.
The amount of dedication to do a sequel of a game that is 16 years old is just impressive!
what was?
i like to think that ratatan takes place centuries after patapon, but thats just a headcanon
also im gald i got into this game at the time that i did because WOW
(thx for getting me into the series thru ur retrospective btw it has become a massive comfort series lmao
Oh wow, that's awesome that video helped you become a fan! I don't disagree with your headcanon either, I personally think this game takes place years after Patapon as well.
I think this is the world end, and years after reaching it, now patapons are acclimated to the world end and have evolved
6:20 Yo, it's my boy, dodonga
wow I didnt think these games would see the light of day again. Now I’m excited to see how it’ll turn out
AND THE SINGING AIRSHIP IS VOICED BY JOSEPH JOESTAR'S VOICE ACTOR LMAOOOO
they knew what they were doing
I still love Patapon to this day, so I'm glad other people still do and it was easily funded, no way fans would let an official successor slip through their fingers. All the new additions and being able to FINALLY play it on pc is amazing.
I'm so impressed with the Patapon community, it's really cool how everything is turning out.
Ughhhh, the commands songs/sounds sound so good. They're playful and motivating. I've used Patapon's OST while working out and I cant wait to hear all of this games soundtrack too
Me too, did you see the latest Kickstarter update? The video features Adachi-san's mentality towards the soundtrack. It's worth a watch!
@@mchaosg I did! I'm excited to see what he and the team have in store for us. It's funny, when I was a Kid playing Patapon I would march around my room while playing. It would help me keep rhythm and kinda sing along with the songs. I'm happy to see more people introduced to this series
Aw, that's really cute!
The music for ratatan is just amazing I love that they kept the music growth as your combo builds. Also the voices are just adorable! The little guys singing their little hearts out having a blast brings me so much joy!
Me too, I'm inspired to guide them wherever they wish so long as they keep laying out those beats!
Patapon for life ❤
"successor" should be in quotation marks
how do you figure
dont remember, im just mad bcs its not patapon 4 but just other game@@mchaosg
(Once again, sorry for writing in spanish, i could take the time to translate it, but i just wanted to show i´m from latam and really like both of your videos and content... and sorry for the typing mistakes, im not the best in this, and i dont like to use google translate.)
The one thing really hoping is that it's not mainly focused on multiplayer
I think we'll see a healthy balance.
Man I have never been this hype in my whole life. I 'm so glad Ratatan is coming soon. I can't wait to play the game and relive my childhood.
I'm right there with you!
when is it coming out?
God it would be so sick if you could set it up to respond to voice commands. How cool would it be if you called out "Zun-taka-zun-taka-zun-taka-tan!" and they actually *responded*
I remember playing patapon 2 so much that my parents had vietnam flashbacks when they heard me boot it up after watching your retrospective haha
I don't know how i just happened to see your retrospective just to find out about this announcement but it's weirdly reassuring that I can go from a kid who doesn't understand how saving works so he just played the same half of the game for like 2 years to going to uni and still being appreciate the masterpiece that was patapon, and I get to look forward to a basically matured version of patapon, god I hope things go well for the devs
That's so funny, I take it your parents don't like the music?
@@mchaosg They said they liked it at first, they even tried the game out a few times but eventually I played it so much it became like a more annoying version of baby shark to them lmao
I guess we could say Dodonga was so tired of patapons beating him up for many centuries that he decided to break the multiverse and show up in the Ratatan universe for revenge.
For real tho *I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR THIS GAME AAAAAA*
he's in for a rude awakening then LOL
Maybe the 7 input commands are actually doubled-up automatically.
Like, press 1 button, and 2 words appear after eachother.
So it'd be input>input>input>input, but the characters speak in 2>2>2>1
It also fits the timing of the pulsing outer border. The characters are essentially combo'ing their lyrics and ending it with a shorter finale.
This also matches the pace of the lyrics in Patapon games, like with the Move Command: Pa-ta>Pa-ta>Pa-ta>Pon.
This is a popular theory, we'll see in time if it holds up!
My favorite moment of the trailer was when Dodonga 2 said "It's ratattin' time" and ratatted all over the ratatans
I'm also glad I was able to tell you more about the series, it makes me happy to know people are learning things from my vault of useless knowledge lol
i hope it will be a good succesor to Patapon
I have 100% faith in Kotani-san to deliver a masterpiece!
YOOOO you got a shoutout in the recent Ratatan Kickstarter update! Deserved, ngl 🥛
I'm so honored!
!! I'm just so stoked! And with the addition of a David Wise collab and chiptune option is awesome. Also, the Redo pun is almost certainly all your theories--Japan loves their multilayered wordplay.
I'm very curious how the chiptune music will sound, hopefully it's crazy like Anamanaguchi or Jake Kaufman!
Patapon was one of my childhood fav game and pretty much what attracted me to the PSP (aside from Need for Speed). Im very glad that Ratatan is a spiritual successor though I hope it will be widely available as much as possible in all platforms. This would be perfect to Switch Players and I hope I see it in GOG or Steam.
was waiting for this video!!! 💜
I wanted to post it yesterday but the kickstarter lost a bunch of funds (see the update for details) and I didn't want to contradict myself too much without re-editing the whole thing.
for me, ratatan is too cute for my taste.
@@mchaosg i just find them rather obnoxious over time. They aren't terrible but I'll take a drumbeat over high pitch voices to keep my rhythm anyday
nelnal is a fantastic artist! the fresh new look they gave fits with the whimsical nature of patapon. i just recommend everyone to look at their work, theyre a uber talented character designer.
Oh yeah we will get playable dark ratatans
It's true, we met the stretch goal!
@@mchaosg pet dark ratatans left the chat
That is also true...
The fandom is stronger than I thought, that's for sure!
Keep up the good work man! Loved your patapon retrospective
Thank you, I'll do my best!
I'm excited to see what this new successor has in store, and I hope the difficulty isn't too hard 😅
I can't wait to draw more art of these silly little guys!! C:
same person from the livestream I keep seeing, ha
Or at least has option to change difficulty
It had to have been fate that during watching your retrospective was when Ratatan Kickstarter opened, and hit the goal before the video had even finished lmao.
I'm so happy to support it, and I look forward to it's release in ~2025
Crazy I just saw your Patapon Retrospective and your channel for the first time roughly 4 days ago and then heres the RATATAN announcement. What a time to love patapon
Spooooky!
"PATAPÓN" ok bro
how do you say it
I never wanted to wait for such a game that bad in my live, this game brings me joy to see Patapon's legacy been *Redo* into it's successor Ratatan, and i really~ no *REALLY* want them to make plushies out of Cobuns and the Ratatans themselves it would be super cute if it happened
I would totally buy a Cobun plush...
@@mchaosga Cobun plush was one of the add on rewards
@@mweeee I know! I got one :)
@@mchaosg nice! Me too
Pikmin 4 just released and now Ratatan looks to fill the Patapon void. We are eating good.
How would you prepare a Dekadon, Louie?
@@mchaosg I don't know, but a chef by the name of Rah Gashapon told me a stew added with an assortment of vegetables, fruits, and meat, cooked over several hours could make for a truly Divine Stew.
Fingers crossed that it turns out to be as amazing as Patapon 4 would be.
🤞
12 years is not soon 😔
If you're referring to the beginning, I meant since my last video - otherwise, yes it is a long wait but better late then never!
I could easily see vtuber voice pack collab with this
No, just please no.
Let's goo, I loved playing patapon on my psp
I'm so glad you made this video! I *just* watched your patapon video and checked your channel. I backed it at the vinyl fever tier with the artbook!
Awesome! Thank you for supporting the Kickstarter and thank you for watching!
@@mchaosg yeah! Love your long-form videos. They just flow well and are very well made. I just finished your katamari video! I'm excited to see what you do next
That's awesome to hear, I hope I can continue to deliver in the future!
Can't wait to play this game. The cute art style and singing of tiny jolly army marching makes my heart beats fast.
same here, my heart is beating at 120 bpm (that's the tempo of Patapon, i'm not dying)
oh my god this came out literally as SOON as i started watching your patapon retrospective what the HELL
all according to plan...😈
Honestly would love if you made update videos on how the game is progressing throughout the months or any other related stuff, it would be nice to just have all the info in one place!
As long as there's enough stuff to talk about, I would love to keep making more!
I nearly didn't see this video - it was just recommended to me. I love patapon, so this is a surprise. awesome!
Glad you gave it a chance, now you know something new!
As a rare example i first discovered your video, and then just out of hopium searched patapon 4 into youtube. To say im stoked for Ratatan is an understatement. Now off to watch your previous vids lol
Thanks for that! Hope you like them, not all of them are video essays like this (this is more a recent thing).
The patapon series was one of my favorite to play growing up so seeing this kickstarter, and seeing it so successful so quickly, hypes me up so much
I don't know if I can wait until April 2025!
I mean if you back the project, you'll have beta access so technically you wouldn't have to wait as long...!
3:01 My theory is that 'Zuntaka' is supposed to be a single beat composed of two strokes, much like how 'Pata' in Patapon is not technically a single stroke but two in one beat. In Patapon, the march command has seven strokes even though there are only four beats.
Could be!
The only Kickstarter that I wholeheartedly Support, been waiting for so long for a new game.
Same, I put a lot of my money into this! Never have I cared more about supporting a project, this is very important to me.
That's kinda my fear that the added complexity will be discouraging for newbies, but it all depends on how forgiving the system is.
I am so excited to play this game, all I've seen is your retrospective on Patapon, the trailer, and now this, but I am absolutely in love with this game already!
Interesting! Definitely give it a shot if you can, it's one thing to watch but actually playing the game is truly special.
Alrighty, i was definitely looking for your video after I saw the ratatan comment on your patapon retrospective:D
I went as fast as I could!
Have you heard that a new ratatan trailer released
I still can't believe this is real. Both the original director of Patapon and sound designer of Patapon/Locoroco
Me too, I'm shook.
I'm really excited about this. A few days ago I saw your Patapon retrospective so, seeing this today really surprised me. Your content is really nice btw! Keep it up
Thank you for watching both!
Maybe, someone else had a theory that commands could be more and less than just 7 beats too.
Makes sense to me, thanks for sharing your research!
This will be my first time backing up a project on Kickstarter. I'm So hyped!!!
Awesome, thank you for your support!
@@mchaosgJust backed the project. LET'S GOOOOOO
LET'S GOOOOOO
Apparently they will have some troubles putting Patapon references/ Easter eggs on Ratatan
How do you figure?
Literally watched the retrospective yesterday and I hear this!?! This day keeps getting better!
I'm here to deliver the good news!
I remembered patapon from your retrospective and even commented that I'd love to play it if I had a Playstation console of sorts.
Soon as I saw the kickstarter I was already on board!
Awesome! It'll be on all platforms too!
I'm feeling nostalgic and about to cry! It's been forever since I heard the Patapon rhythm. I just watched the Retrospect and it brings me back to my roots! Definitely teaching my child this game!
patapon/ratatan sounds like a wonderful family bonding experience
