Honesty, they got their money's worth with 300k miles on it. My old boss had a fleet of Ford Transits and F150s. He begged his employees to alert him the moment something doesn't feel right or a dummy light came on. He took care of them and a few of his Transits and F150s lasted around 500k.

    • @FirstLastOne

Here's the thing, some models have versions with ABS and some without. The brakes work exactly the same if an ABS equipped car has the ABS disabled so it's complete crap that if it came with it, it must be working. Seat belts, turn indicators, windscreen, wipers, etc. YES, they must work but if your passenger mirror isn't there anymore and you have a rear window you can see through and side windows, like a Civic, it's fine and on some cars, a passenger side mirror is an option. Stupid I know but it is an option on some.

I happen to own this same year model but it’s just a XT. My employer has several HD truck dealerships and a couple of years ago he closed one of them. It had a couple of high mileage F150s (300K+) and this Transit that were used for parts deliveries. I bought it with it only having 167,000 highway miles and it’s been a nice little van so far. Engine is clean as a whistle and no oil leaks.

The most surprising was my 2011 GMC Terrain. It topped out at 240 kph ( I’m in Canada, metric system ) it’s got the 2.4 liter 4 banger all wheel drive. I topped it out and it wanted to go faster. It also didn’t take long to get to that speed.

Drive it till it dies is my motto. I never buy new cars. I have a $5000 limit and I drive them as long as I can. The car I'm drive now is a 2001 PT Cruiser with about 200,000 miles. I've been driving it for 15+ years. I will be replacing it in the next few months because of rust/rot and repairs not worth fixing. Same here. With the exception of my most recent car, I've never spent more than $1000 on a car. My most recent purchase was last year; $3400 for a 2003 Lexus in near mint condition with 150K miles. I stole it for that price! I spent $2000 on maintenance, and I'm confident it will last another 150K without any major issues. Even with the money I put into it, it's actually worth more than what I paid. I'm driving it till it dies, or the body starts rusting through.

Somehow the seatbelt circuitry is tied into the Airbag Warning light system too. A study found that ABS alone actually increases the risk for the occupants of the car, as it is more likely to roll over. Still, think twice about driving a car with faulty ABS, as at least some have ABS based brake force distribution, thus may experience reduced stability for soft braking on slippery roads if the ABS is faulty. If it's a sensor fault, it may resort to a safe mode where you get unexpected ABS BRRRRT action even with good grip.

@@joevignolor4u949 That's the nature of no ABS brakes. When the ABS was acting up on my regular car at first I was concerned, but then I realized that as the car has four wheel disks it still had better brakes than any other car I've owned, none of which had ABS. I drive my 25 year old Jeep XJ fairly often and of course it doesn't have ABS... that's just the nature of older cars.

I had my ABS modulator go out on LaShonda the Honda (2012 Honda Accord). Honda wanted something crazy like $1500 for the part. I was able to get the used (OEM Honda part) for one-third the price. And Honda even installed for me (just charged me one hour labor). You can drive the car fine without the ABS and traction control.

Really surprised a dealership installed a part you bought yourself. Almost all shops won't touch customer supplied parts for "liability reasons". Definitely nothing to do with profit from the added markup on the part.

That hood latch reminds me of my 79 Z28. It was always stuck. At least there was a lot of room to work on the engine. It was a very strong engine. 350 4speed with some mods. Too bad they were rust buckets. A buddy bought the drivetrain and the scrapyard gave me 500$. Not a good ROI for the 9k I paid for it new.

No new car is an investment except in the sense that you are spending money. Historically new cars lose value as soon as you drive out of the dealers lot. Certain cars do wind up being collectable but it takes decades to get a positive ROI.
The question is how long were you able to enjoy your Z28? How much fun did you have with it?

If they do scrap it some junkyard is gonna love all those nice parts. The interior seemed in surprisingly good condition for 300k.
Considering the cost just to fix the ABS, let alone whatever else it wrong with it or will break soon, they're making a smart choice by looking for something new instead of pouring money into it.

    • @ShukenFlash
      @ShukenFlash 2 роки тому

I had to make the same choice recently with my last vehicle. Loved it and still in overall good shape, but it was reaching the point of having some very expensive repairs on the horizon just from wear. And when it's your work vehicle and you need it running in order to do your job properly having something that's going to need a lot of shop time is doubly bad. Traded it in for a new RAM with the new bells and whistles they've added. I still miss it, but I also love the new truck.

Since that a part is hard to get, probably likely the cause of the issue.
Ford had a recall for those years, they put a corrosive break fluid in. They recalled my 2007 Milan to flush the brake fluid. But since the corrosion took place for 14 years already, I assume the damage is done.

People just don't have the money to repair old cars but in turn don't have the money to purchase new. However since he's got a business he should be able to depreciate a new van. My 96 Bronco had its ABS fail. I just pulled the fuse and contined to drive until if fell apart.

My 2013 Transit Connect showed the exact same warning lights. When I ran a diagnostic test on it, it showed the front passenger speed sensor was bad. I replaced the sensor, about $20, and the warnings cleared. I guess if any part of the ABS system is faulty, the same lights show up.

Had a hell of a scare with my C4 not too long ago, suddenly went into a mode where it would not change above second gear in auto or in manual, dash lit up like a Christmas tree, Service, ABS, Parking Brake, Traction Control and others all came on. Got the car home (Parking Brake would not disengage after I activated it) and thought I was in for some major spending. Turned out the left front sensor cable and the hub needed some cleaning. But yes, this would not be allowed out on the road with any of those warning lights on in the UK as it would fail an MOT, as others have stated.
