Politics had nothing to do with it. He was in way over his head and didn't have the money. When rebuilding/ restoring a vessel, you start from the bottom up. Not the top-down like he did. He never put it into drydock because he didn't have the money to do it. Unfortunately, it's a wasted effort for those who gave their time or money.

I’m sure he had every intention of finishing the ship. However, he was in way over his head and his knowledge. He was fixing things on top of the boat while the bottom was rotting.
I visited the ship somewhat recently, and I knew she was in need of a proper dry dock refit. The ship had holes from corrosion right above the waterline. It was sooner or later, until someone brings her into a shipyard and replace the hull plates.

Well, He restored parts of the inside and the Deck, but never bothered about the underwater hull during the 15 years He owned the ship, should have gone to drydock long ago
It was the first ship of that size buildt in Germany after WW2, Blohm&Voss should buy it back and restore it to be displayed in the Hamburg Museum harbour (the original Name was "Wappen von Hamburg")
It is a bit sad, the old owner could not fix/repair/restore as fast as the ship decayed and finally ran out of finances and motivation, a new owner without any understanding about the state of the ship jumped into buying it and apparently did not take measures to 24/7 surveillance regarding water intrusion and a way to remove eventually water, you even need this on brand new boats. The ship needed at dry dock, sand blasting, and then an thorough investigation of the state of the hull, and the result may very well be that it is too expensive to fix the hull, and to come to this conclusion will cost a lot of money. I would not be surprised if it would had turned out to be cheaper to build a new hull than to repair the existing one, sorry.
@@pforce9 It's a small vessel, so air bladders would be the efficient way to go. Pumping it out would require all the pumped water to be filtered, if the hull only has a few bad spots and is not swiss cheese.
Just watched helicopter footage, there is another ship, not the tug - that's sunken right next to it.. What is this, don't they have a bilge alarm system? It doesn't freeze there and they were just working on it a few months ago.. Doesn't make sense..
If you go back in the restoration videos that large sunken ship along side is still there. I ask the same question what is the name of the ship? Seems to be such a waste.

@@benzproducts Money is the answer, Chris was running out of money/time/motivation/enthusiasm/etc. He had properly been told many times, over the years, by people that understand old ships, that the condition of his ship was "bad" or as a minimum "questionable" and that he need dry dock, sand blasting, and a thorough investigation of the state of the hull just to get a realistic estimate about the state of the ships hull, that is very expensive, and it is money you will not be able to get back if the condition turns out to be bad. The line of car/ship owners that had done a thorough investigation of the state of their thing and then realized that it was way more bad than they had hoped for is long, very long, the line of those that just hoped "it will be ok, I will just go on fixing it step by step" and then suddenly the thing breaks into pieces, is even longer. Old used cars is bad, old used ships is even more bad, the numbers of dreamers is endless, unscrupulous used car/ship salesmen's make a damn good living from these dreamers.

@@benzproducts According to recent Facebook posts, he continually ran into issues with county officials who constantly threatened to condemn the boat. he sold it to another person who had been working with him to restore the ship and had quietly moved on.

Well, I guess that's the end of the line. She was a fixer-upper before, but now presumably all of her machinery spaces are full of water, engines ruined, electronics ruined, pretty much a death sentence.
there were no electronics, and they never fired up the engines, so nobody knows how it was. If I was being honest, its in the same shape it was in.... just 6 feet deeper in the water. Just tryna give you some encouragement............
Unless you're a multi millionaire/billionaire, nobody should be buying and "fixing up" big boats like these. There's 2 rotting ferry boats in Puget Sound, a huge barge from Expo '86 falling apart in Vancouver, BC and the sad ending of the ferry Kalakala all bought by people with "big plans".

This ship is not the original love boat. The two cruise ship that was used during the filming of the show have been scrapped years ago and the names of the ships are Pacific princess and island princess. If you would of just googled the original love boat you wouldn't of used misleading information in your news video. But wait all news is misleading
“Restoring” ships is not for amateurs and shoestring budgets. It should have been turned into razor blades a long time ago. Its foreign built, was never jones act compliant and had no place in domestic work in the USA.

When the owner doesn’t come forward or can’t be located they will declare it abandoned and use oil spill funds to at least get the oil pumped off and cleaned up, depending on the long term environmental risk decides if they remove the wreck or not.

It's not the love boat! The original Pacific Princess, the love boat used on TV was scrapped in 2013 in Turkey.
Apparently, it was the inspiration for Love Boat. And it was used in filming of the James Bond movie "From Russia with love".
