BRAVO, BRAVO!! What a Fantastic Grand Opera Performance of James Morris as Don Giovanni on "Live from The Met: Don Giovanni" and hosted by Tony Randall, which is one of the very special programs that first ever aired as part of PBS' Festival '78 Membership Pledge Drive (Thursday March 16th, 1978) and repeated during the Festival '78 30-Hour National Marathon (Sunday March 19th, 1978) on most PBS stations across the country including my local station: KPBS in San Diego, California! Join The Celebration on Public TV!!

I attended one of the performances recorded for telecast, with those huge cameras. Incredible cast, long before Morris’s Wagner roles. And, if you can believe it, some people complained after the performance about Sutherland - they were expecting a few of her famous high notes, and were unaware that Donna Anna doesn’t go above high-C. I think the Met finally showed this old performance during the pandemic.

I went to this production in NY as a 13 year old. My parents brought me to hear Sutherland, but I was hooked by everyone else in the cast and by Mozart. Morris/Bacquier were incredible together!
Too bad the sets wore out-- their next two attempts were nowhere near as effective.

Not a fan of Varady - sounds like she's over-singing and the tone is unattractive to start with. Hardly a suitable technique for Mozart.
