  • Sheva knows the power of not knowing. Turns out, for centuries, we’ve done quite well not knowing, and actually thrived because of it. You all have phones near you, but can they help you answer the important questions, and how do we, in this digital age, work through what to know and what to wonder about.
SHEVA RAJAEE, MFT, is a psychotherapist licensed in the State of California, and is currently working at the OCD Center of Los Angeles. Sheva specializes in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and other related anxiety disorders. She attended the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) for her undergraduate degree, and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California (USC). Sheva was trained in behavioral therapy at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, and worked in the Early Childhood Partial Hospitalization Program serving children with Autism before moving on to do research at the UCLA Social Stigma and Social Interaction laboratory under Dr. Jenessa Shapiro. Sheva sees clients domestically and internationally in over 20 different countries.

I found this video today. I’m glad it is recognised thing as an OCD.
I call my short term rewarding behaviour (information or otherwise mood slavery) as ‘micro-controlling’. I tell myself ‘give up microcontrol for macrocontrol’ and it snaps me out of it.

I came across this video bc I have been almost addicted to hearing other peoples perspectives about anxiety disorders and overall mental heath issues. But the deeper I dive.. the more I relate, the more anxious I make myself, the more I self diagnose. I need to unplug for sure.

The only problem with this story for me is that doctors create this anxiety by not providing answers. I had a mysterious condition appear and every doctor I went to kept pushing me away without answers and that led me to anxiety and research myself. I would gladly go to a doctor who can solve problems, but in my experience it is not often the case. Quick bandaid pill doesn’t solve the root cause. Yes if it is something minor, the doctor might be right but if it’s more complex they just take your money and push you to next appointment.

Her experience with OCD in how it manifests in these thoughts of uncertainty that cause answer seeking that just leads to more uncertainty and anxiety is almost exactly what I experience. As a kid my OCD involved patterns and symmetry as well, but the predominant part was obsessing mentally over fears I had and anxiety of uncertainty. Things such as being terrified that my house would get broken into while my parents were gone, and I would have to check all the doors in the house to make sure they're locked...every 10 minutes (or any time I thought I heard something). Now its more like her experience of needing to be certain of things and exaggerating thoughts out of proportion in my head until I can get complete certainty of things - which of course you can never be 100% certain of something - creating a feedback look that just leads down a path of never ending anxiety about things that aren't even happening or have very little basis in reality. Its really hard to explain to people that I have OCD when they've known me for years and have viewed me as a normal person, as they are unaware of the constant thoughts of "what if" that run through my mind to the point that I don't like being alone with my thoughts, but I also don't want to be in social situations that trigger these intrusive thoughts in the first place, leaving me lost and alone in my mind.

Im with you on that. I struggle with that ocd too. Started about 3 years ago. I used to compulsively research for answers on the internet about my particular intrusive thoughts. But it didnt solve anything. It made new labels for me. Right now I sometimes do it. But after this video I see what needs to be done. And that everyone of us who suffer from this addiction can overcome it with multiple strategies

It speaks exactly to what you've described. I'm making my way through it and have found it to be very illuminating. As Sheva Rajaee says, uncertainty and the need for 100% reassurance really are at the core of OCD.
