As a coach myself, I think it is important to be open about your mistakes. I find myself guilty of using the "babys move awesome" rethoric, and you got me thinking about why do I say these statements. Though nothing as insane as these guys, we all must remain skeptical not just of others, but ourselves. Though I believe there is something about being an infant and moving primarily in and from the ground that promotes healthy movement, and movement restriction that develop as we rely more on chairs and supports as we age, I must admit it is a compelling hypothesis, but nothing I can actually back up. I'm a big fan of Dan John and Barbell medicine folks, and I think taking both approaches creates a great middle ground that might stop us from going too coocoo with the functional " noble savage" stuff, and too clinical and "this is the optimal way to take a shit and I won't try otherwise unless there are 50 metanalyses to prove otherwise" extremes. I'm exaggerating of course but hopefully you get the point. Thank you for the reflection.

That’s not really true though, especially in the context of this video topic. Many methods, especially stability training, are virtually never a justifiably effective approach for any common athletic or fitness goal. For any given goal there are absolutely better and worse approaches, and there are some approaches that simply have no real value, like the nonsense gimmicks of these woke coaches. To say that everything has its place is just a reductive platitude that sidesteps the fact that we can just make basic critical evaluations.

I really liked this video. It’s sad how many unqualified trainers, coaches and self proclaimed experts are all over social media. Most of them have no idea about anatomy and training, still they push their quackery to young people that have even less knowledge and therefore don’t realize what actual bs they are listening to,.. unfortunate these “experts” still get many views and young athletes believe that view count has something to do with credibility,.. anyway keep up the excellent work,..

The more info we can get out about how harmful that type of kinesiophobia-pedling is the better. 80 % of the American population does not meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity. The numbers are similar here in Denmark. It is not "wrong" movement that is hurting people it is lack of movement that is killing them.

A year and a half late, but given that athletes are bigger, stronger, etc. than they ever been before, it doesn't make any sense that their training is compromising their performance. Plus, these athletes are pushing themselves to the own physical limit constantly (Rafa Nadal is a good example), so there is, of course, an increase risk of injury.

The whole point of GOATA is that many people such as Michael Jordan move in these patterns naturally and that means every person has the ability to move that way. Who here doesn’t want to have athleticism like Michael Jordan? And not to mention I don’t remember him ever getting injured, maybe that speaks to the way he moved, just maybe. Goata is for athletes or people who want to move through space most efficiently and safely. So by all means if your career is to be an Olympic weightlifter then don’t do goata but also don’t complain when you’re in constant discomfort and feel like you cannot move well in your 40s 50s and 60s

I first started to hear about functional training about 15 years ago, at the time it seemed to mostly be focused on creating programs with a balance of movement patterns, and I don't know how it got so far off track. The idea that training for and playing a sport like hockey (to pick an example) can leave you with imbalances that lead to pain and injuries is fairly reasonable; I don't know how that warped into the demonization of tried and tested training methods that have produced such great athletes.

Made up terms that are not coherent, pseudo scientific lexicon, social science based on feelings not on facts and a complete lack of dissent in thinking. No one debates or questions "wokeness". Instead, the students use the terminology as if its a sense of brilliance as opposed to using a broader english vocabulary. im a "functional coach". With a strong background in ESS. saw many problems with how people were trained, went out and found some higher level understanding of how the body works, and yes, people pay me to teach them. the thing people don't understand is that in any large homogenous group of practitioners, the standardizing process gets rid of 2 things. the shit that doesn't work well, and the stuff that is more individualized. literally the best and the worst both get pushed out in the act of standardization. from all ive seen, the best people in any field have learned the standards, noted where it wasn't working, and went out and found better material to better suit the athletes. if you think we in the west have a great understanding of sport and how the body works, your sorely mistaken. from what ive seen, russian sport science is light years ahead, and the internal arts of china (qigong, meditation) also hold some super valuable lessons that directly violate many of the assumptions we in the west hold. What I learned in grad school was that our athleteic training is great for short term gains, but it causes a lot of damage; Pro athletes live shorter lives than normal people; Pro athletics is not healthy. And the pros coaches take their methods and share them with amateur athletes. It's designed to help a team win in the short term, not keep an athlete going long term. so you gotta look at whether your in it for short term gain or to have a lifelong athletic career. most ex pro athletes limp around when they are old. "functional movement" can do great things to rehab these people. I do this work. fixing people who have been throught the "standard treatment" and did not get good results. in short, ive been on both sides of this coin, and if your truly interested in optimal performance, you will take both sides seriously. bullshit on both sides. and yes, your selling us YOUR method here, so it's not a dig to say they are selling stuff. tha'ts what we do in US.

Im a strength coach who loves powerlifting and am a powerlifter BUT I must agree regardless of the verbage they use, they are right. traditional models are meant to develop the highest level of athletes in a relative short time frame. which in that case maybe power lifting frequently is the best form of programming but for the programmer/school/organization..not the athlete themselves. Traditional models help get athletes through the door of the pro level but very few stick around once in. if you drive car a 100 miles an hour then sharply cut the wheel..what happens to the car??? operate the mechanics the way its meant to be designed and it will last longer and youll give yourself a chance to develop long term.
